Board of Directors
Gordon MacDougall (Chair) [bio]
MacDougall is Vice Chairman and Director of Connor, Clark & Lunn Investment Management. CC&L is an affiliate of Connor, Clark & Lunn Financial Group one of Canada's largest and fastest growing independent asset management firms in Canada, managing in excess of $40 billion.
MacDougall joined the company shortly after it was founded in 1982, and has been involved in investment management since 1969, serving variously with Yorkshire Trust, AGF Vancouver, Dominion Securities, and Sun Life Assurance. At the same time, he has raised funds and volunteered his time with numerous organizations, including Junior Achievement, BC Heart Association, St. George's School, Vancouver Art Gallery, and Vancouver Foundation.
MacDougall has an MBA, a CFA designation, and is currently on the board of International Forest Products.
Chief Justice Robert J. Bauman (Supreme Court of BC rep) [bio]
The Honourable Robert J. Bauman was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in 1996, was appointed to the British Columbia Court of Appeal in 2008 and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia on 9 September 2009. Prior to his judicial appointment in 1996 he was in private practice with Bull, Housser & Tupper in Vancouver. He worked largely in the areas of local government and administrative law. While practicing law he also taught administrative law at the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Law as an adjunct professor from 1991 to 1996.
Kevin Bent [bio]
As Executive Vice President, Western Canada for Postmedia Network Inc., and President and Publisher for Pacific Newspaper Group, Kevin Bent has the responsibility for Western Canada's largest daily newspapers — The Vancouver Sun, The Province, The Victoria Times Colonist, The Calgary Herald and The Edmonton Journal. He is also responsible for Postmedia's community newspapers in Canada.
Bent is a seasoned media executive, with more than 17 years experience in the newspaper industry. Following Postmedia's goal to support communities where they do business, he is active on local boards and charities including: BC Children's Hospital Foundation; Sunny Hill Health Centre; BC Business Council; BC Achievement Foundation; and Streetohome. He is also a director of the Vancouver Board of Trade; a trustee of the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum and is Vice Chair for Grey Cup 2011.
Tom Bradley [bio]
Bradley is the President and co-founder of Steadyhand. He has 28 years of experience in the investment industry. He started his career in 1983 as an Equity Analyst at Richardson Greenshields, and spent eight years with the firm, the last three as Director of Institutional Sales. In 1991, he joined Phillips, Hager & North as a Research Analyst and Institutional Portfolio Manager, and was appointed to the Board of Directors of PH&N in 1996. He became COO in 1998, and was appointed President and CEO in 1999 - a role he held until he resigned from the firm in 2005.
Bradley writes a regular column in the Globe and Mail. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Manitoba and an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business.
Tung Chan [bio]
Tung Chan is the former CEO of SUCCESS (a group of registered charities dedicated to multiculturalism through building bridges and fostering social integration). He is currently an Honorary Captain of the Canadian Navy and the Vice Chair of the Trustees of the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21.
Since coming to Canada in 1974 at the age of 22, Chan has been a waiter, bartender, radio producer, Councillor and Deputy Mayor of the City of Vancouver, a branch manager of the Royal Bank, and a vice president of the TD Bank Financial Group. Chan has also volunteered his time at a long list of civic, cultural, business and educational organizations. In 2002, he was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in recognition of this contribution to the community.
Chan holds a Bachelor of Arts from UBC and a General Management Diploma from the Institute of Canadian Bankers where he is also a Fellow.
Dr. Vera Frinton [bio]
Dr. Frinton is an obstetrician and gynaecologist. Her career has included more than 30 years of clinical practice, three terms as an elected member of the Council of the College of Physicians & Surgeons of British Columbia, and a term as Associate Dean, Admissions in the UBC Faculty of Medicine.
Dr. Frinton continues to serve on two committees of the College of Physicians & Surgeons of BC, and on several committees at the Vancouver Foundation. Recently, she completed a term on the Board of the Down Syndrome Research Foundation, and was also involved with Special Olympics Whistler Valley Branch. Although "semi-retired," Dr. Frinton is still involved in clinical care by working intermittently in colleagues' offices as a locum. She also teaches and examines medical students and residents in obstetrics and gynaecology.
Yuri Fulmer (United Way of the Lower Mainland rep) [bio]
Fulmer leads three successful companies: FDC Brands, FDC Capital and FDC Real Estate. He is the General Partner at FDC Brands, a restaurant company with locations in BC and Alberta that he built from a single A&W franchise into one of Canada's largest and fastest growing privately held food and beverage businesses. He is Chairman and CEO of FDC Capital, a private equity firm he started in 2010 to invest in small and mid-size businesses, and Chairman and CEO of FDC Real Estate, an owner and developer of commercial and residential property in Canada and the U.S.
Fulmer serves on a variety of civic and corporate boards, including the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Vancouver, Freybe Gourmet Foods, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, the North Shore Credit Union, and the Vancouver Opera. He is a passionate fund raiser for the United Way of the Lower Mainland, whose board he chairs.
Fulmer was named one of Canada's Top Forty Under 40 in 2007 and he was recognized for his leadership and dedication to improving the community as a recipient of the BC Community Achievement Award in 2010.
Anna Fung, Q.C. (Law Society of BC rep) [bio]
Fung is Counsel and Chief Privacy Officer for Intrawest ULC. She has practiced law in BC for more than 25 years, specializing in corporate/commercial, aboriginal and administrative law.
Fung was an elected Bencher of the BC Law Society for 10 years and its President in 2007. She also served as President of the Association of Chinese Canadian Professionals and Chair of the People's Law School. She was appointed Queen's Counsel in 2000.
In 2007, Fung received both the Canadian Bar Association BC Branch's Equality and Diversity Award, and the Vancouver YWCA Woman of Distinction Award in the Business & Professions category. In 2008, she was named one of the recipients of the BC Community Achievement Award and was a nominee for the UBC Alumni Award of Distinction.
Ida Goodreau (Vancouver Board of Trade rep) [bio]
Goodreau is an Adjunct Professor, Sauder School of Business, and a Director with the Centre for Healthcare Management at UBC. She is former CEO of Vancouver Coastal Health and LifeLabs Medical Laboratories.
She sits as a Director on the Boards of Fortis Inc, Fortis BC, Genome BC, and the Canada West Foundation.
Goodreau has a B.Comm and an MBA from the University of Windsor.
Paul Lacerte [bio]
Lacerte is the Provincial Executive Director of the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres, a position he has held for the past 15 years.
The BCAAFC represents the largest Aboriginal service infrastructure in British Columbia and is engaged in social and community development for aboriginal peoples.
He also serves as the CEO for the BC Centre of Excellence for Young Indigenous Leaders and has been instrumental in the establishment of an international Indigenous Youth Alliance. Lacerte currently sits as one of the Canadian representatives at the United Nations Permanent Forum for Indigenous Peoples in New York. He is a practitioner of traditional Aboriginal culture and ceremony and is a member of the Carrier First Nation in northern BC.
Brandt C. Louie [bio]
Louie is Chairman and CEO of H.Y. Louie Co. Limited and Chairman of the Board of London Drugs Limited. He has built both companies based on the core values of respect, hard work and philanthropy. Louie has also donated his time to serve on the boards of numerous financial, educational and medical institutions, and has received many awards for those efforts. He is Chancellor of Simon Fraser University, has a B.Comm from UBC, FCA designation, and an Honourary Doctor of Laws from SFU. In 2009, he was made a Member of the Order of British Columbia.
John McLernon (Vice-Chair) [bio]
McLernon is Honourary Chairman and Co-Founder of the Colliers Macaulay Nicolls Group of Companies. Over the past three decades he has guided CMN through steady business growth, successfully completing some 50 mergers and acquisitions in the Americas, Asia Pacific and Europe.
McLernon is Chair of BCLC and sits on several other corporate Boards. He has also been a Director of the Waterfront Theatre, Vancouver Art Gallery and Vancouver Opera.
Floyd Murphy, CLU, CH.F.C (Nominee of Advocis) [bio]
A founding member and President of the Nakamun Group, Murphy has an extensive background in financial, retirement and estate planning. In addition to serving as a past-president of the New Westminster Life Underwriters Association, Estate Planning Council of Vancouver and the BC Mainland Chartered Life Underwriter chapter, he served on the national board of Advocis for nine years, including one year as Chairman and CEO.
Malik Talib [bio]
Talib is a tax lawyer turned entrepreneur. In the past 16 years, he has started businesses in publishing, real estate, wireless technology and, most recently, mining and exploration.
His expertise includes acquisitions, tax planning, real estate planning, global market analysis, import and export, people and organizational change management, corporate governance, corporate strategy and business planning and operations. In 1999, Talib was named as one of Business in Vancouver's Top 40 under 40.
Talib has served at national and local levels on corporate and community boards, including: BC Children's Hospital Foundation; Research Institute of BC; and Cabinet of the United Way of the Lower Mainland. He is currently Vice-President of the Aga Khan Council for Canada.

Martin Gifford, Q.C. (Chair) [bio]
Gifford has a wide-ranging business law practice with interests in everything from agriculture to tourism. His community involvement includes numerous directorships including UNICEF, Vancouver Academy of Music, and Vancouver Bar Association (President 1979-1980). An active member of the Canadian Olympic Committee, he has also served as a Governor and Executive Committee Member of the Canadian Olympic Foundation. He is also Chair of the 2010 Games Ambassadors for VANOC and for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
Stephanie Carlson [bio]
Carlson has been active in local philanthropy and community work for more than 30 years. She was an original volunteer and 20-year supporter of Pacific Riding for Developing Abilities, a long-time member (and recent Chair) of the Children's Hospital Foundation Board, has served on the boards of the Vancouver Aquarium and Avalon Women's Centre, and has co-chaired the United Way of the Lower Mainland campaign. For her efforts, she has been honoured by Volunteer Vancouver, and is a recipient of the BC Achievement Award.
Carlson is the grand-daughter of H.R. MacMillan — one of the founders of the Vancouver Foundation. She has four daughters of her own and two grand-daughters.
John Dustan [bio]
John Dustan moved to Vancouver from Ontario in 1984 to work in the investment business. In 1989, he founded Dustan Wachell Capital Management , a firm with private and institutional clients from across Canada and one of the first investment firms to offer socially responsible investment options. He oversaw the firm’s transition to Genus Capital Management, as Chair and CEO until he retired in 2001.
Dustan is past Chair and Director of Special Olympics BC and a Director of Special Olympics Canada. He was also Governor of the Law Foundation of British Columbia, and a member of the Professional Conduct Enquiry Committee of the BC Institute of Chartered Accountants.
Currently, John is an investment advisor to the Alberta Public Service Pension Plan, Pacific Blue Cross, the Vancouver School of Theology and is a Board member on a number of public companies. John has also served on the Board of Directors of Vancouver Foundation.
He has an MBA from McMaster University.
Dr. Felix Durity [bio]
Dr. Felix Durity is Professor Emeritus in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC. He was born in San Fernando, Trinidad, where he attended Queen's Royal College, and graduated as top student in the Island Scholarship in Languages.
After receiving a B.A in Biology at UBC, he enrolled in medical school, graduated as an MD in 1963, and became the first trainee in Neurosurgery at UBC. He subsequently became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in Neurosurgery in 1970, and pursued an academic career in this field at UBC, where he was Head of Neurosurgery until 2002.
Durity's career involved research in the field of head injury and the sub-specialty practice of difficult brain and spinal tumours and cerebro-vascular disorders.
He is a founding Board member of the Korle-Bu Neuroscience Foundation, a charitable organization committed to improving the care of needy Ghanaians and West Africans suffering the ravages of brain and spine diseases.
His work has been recognized with numerous awards including: Rocke Robertson, AD Forward and AD Mackenzie Awards UBC for best undergraduate and postgraduate teaching (1986, 1999, 2000, 2001); "Best Doctors in Canada" (1998- ); Award of Excellence at UBC Medicine's Golden Jubilee; BCMA Cam Coady Award for Excellence and Humanitarianism (2004); UBC Medical Alumni Wallace Wilson Leadership Award for lifetime excellence; Order of British Columbia; and Honorary Membership in the Canadian Medical Association.
Lynda Farmer [bio]
Farmer's working life began in the non-profit sector, working for the Canadian Red Cross Society and The Arthritis Society. Following a career in administration and communications with the provincial healthcare sector, Farmer consulted on local and national communication initiatives. She is now a partner in two firms -- Westside Equestrian Centre at Bonnie Brae Farm in Saanich, and Beckton Estates Inc.
She and her husband recently co-chaired the Shaw Ocean Discovery Campaign, to fund the creation of a new $8 million world-class aquarium exhibit in Sidney, BC. She is currently the Chair for the Board of Governors of Camosun College, and has served with Camosun College Foundation; BC Cancer Foundation; Rogers Radio Group; United Way of Canada - Centraide Canada; United Way of Greater Victoria; The Arthritis Society; Mary Winspear Community Cultural Centre Foundation; Pacific Institute of Sport Excellence and; Pacific Opera Society.
Farmer has received numerous awards for her contributions, including: the Generosity of Spirit Award for Philanthropy; the Queens Jubilee Medal; Community Leader of the Year Award from CFAX Radio; and Chair's Award of Distinction from United Way of Canada - Centraide Canada.
Leila Getz, CM, OBC, DFA [bio]
In 1980, Getz brought a dream to life when she founded the Vancouver Recital Society. As its Artistic and Executive Director, she has built an international reputation for the Society. Getz has served on juries and arts boards in Vancouver and is a member of an international advisory committee to the Melbourne Recital Centre. She serves on the Board of the St. James Academy of Music and is Chair of the Board of the Quiring Chamber Music Camp in Vancouver.
Hager was one of the founders of Philips, Hager and North in 1962. Since that time, PH&N has grown into one of the largest investment management companies in Canada. Now retired, after a long career in asset management, Hager and his wife are active philanthropists, giving both through the Vancouver Foundation and privately. Hager also serves on the board of Rugby Canada Foundation, and has been very involved in the restoration of the Tsolum River system on Vancouver Island. He has a Masters degree in business administration from the University of Southern California.
Dr. Judith Hall [bio]
A leader and world authority in both genetics and paediatrics, Dr. Hall has contributed to the development of resources and services essential to coping with genetic illnesses. Involved with Vancouver Foundation for many years, she was also on the Board of the BC Medical Foundation and helped in the development of the BC Community Research and Community Ethics Committee. Dr. Hall has received many awards for her outstanding academic work and service, nationally and internationally, including the Order of Canada.
Mike Harcourt [bio]
Harcourt is a former premier of British Columbia, mayor of Vancouver and city councillor.
He is a passionate believer in the power of cities and communities to improve the human condition. After a long career as a lawyer, community activist, and politician, a near-fatal accident in 2002 strengthened his resolve to contribute to the transformation of cities and communities around the world through the principles of sustainability, particularly in relation to social inclusion.
Harcourt now writes, lectures and consults internationally on sustainable solutions. In 2006, he chaired the Prime Minister's Advisory Committee for Cities and Communities, and co-chaired the National Advisory Committee on the UN-HABITAT World Urban Forum. In 2007, he was the Walter Bean Visiting Professor on the Environment at the University of Waterloo.
Along with numerous honourary degrees from BC universities, Harcourt has received the J.B. Harkin Medal Award for Conservation of Nature (2003), the Woodrow Wilson Award for Public Service (2005), and the Canadian Urban Institute Jane Jacobs Lifetime Achievement Award (2006).

Jake Kerr [bio]
Jake Kerr is Managing Partner of Lignum Forest Products LLP — a wood products distribution and trading company — and Chair of Lignum Investments Ltd., a privately-held investment company. He is also majority owner of the Vancouver Canadians baseball club.
For 35 years, Kerr was Chair and CEO of Lignum Limited, one of Canada's largest, privately-held forest products companies. He was previously employed by the International Paper Company in New York, and Botsford Advertising in San Francisco.
Kerr was educated at UBC and received an MBA in Economics and Finance from the University of California at Berkeley.
He is a member of the Chief Executive Organization; Past Chair of the International and BC Chapters of the Young Presidents’ Organization; a Director of the Bank of Nova Scotia; and founding Chancellor of the Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Kerr also served as Chair of the Vancouver Foundation for four years, until 2011.
He has received numerous awards for his contributions to the province and the country including: an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from SFU; the Order of British Columbia and the Order of Canada.
Kerr’s interests include art collecting, fly fishing, tennis, golf and baseball.
He has five grown children and four grand children.
The Honourable Madam Justice Risa Levine [bio]
Madam Justice Levine was appointed as a Justice of the Court of Appeal for British Columbia in 2001 after serving as a Justice of the BC Supreme Court since 1995. Before being appointed to the bench, she practiced taxation law. She helped coordinate judicial education programs through the National Judicial Institute in Ottawa and has also served as a member of the Family Law Committee and the Education Committee of the BC Supreme Court.
Kyle Mitchell [bio]
Mitchell is a partner in the Vancouver office of Odgers Berndtson. He has more than 35 years' experience in executive search, and has helped recruit board members, CEOs and senior executives for many of BC's leading organizations.
Mitchell has served as a 2010 Olympic Games Ambassador and as Chair or member of numerous boards, including: Vancouver Public Library Board of Trustees; UBC Alumni Association; Jack Webster Foundation; Vancouver Board of Trade; Via Rail Canada; Canadian Craft Museum; and the Stanley Theatre Leadership Cabinet.
Mitchell holds degrees in commerce and law from UBC. For his community service, he received the 125th Anniversary of Confederation Commemorative Medal in 1992, and the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002.
Geoff Plant, Q.C. [bio]
Plant is a partner in the Vancouver office of the national law firm Heenan Blaikie LLP.
He was raised in Vancouver and educated at Harvard College, Southampton, Dalhousie and Cambridge universities. After a 15-year career in private law practice, he was elected to the British Columbia Legislature in 1996 and served as Attorney General of British Columbia and Minister responsible for Treaty Negotiations from 2001 to 2005.
Since joining Heenan Blaikie in 2005, Plant has undertaken various public law and policy projects and served as a commercial law mediator and arbitrator. In 2006, he was appointed as Special Advisor to the Premier and Minister of Advanced Education to lead the first comprehensive review of post-secondary education in British Columbia in over 40 years. From May 2007 to February 2009, Plant served as the Commissioner of Vancouver's Project Civil City.
He is also a board member of many organizations including: Providence Health Care Society; Covenant House Vancouver; StreetoHome Foundation; and the Kaiser Foundation.
Patrice Pratt [bio]
As a community and social justice advocate, Pratt has performed extensive work in her community including serving as Chair of the Board of the United Way of the Lower Mainland. During her 28 years with the BCGEU, she served in various elected positions in the BC Federation of Labour and was appointed to a number of boards including the Board of BC Hydro and the UBC Labour Relations Board. She has also served as Vice Chair of the Governor General's Leadership Conference.
Heather Raven [bio]
Raven is a member of the Brokenhead Ojibway First Nation in Manitoba. She practiced employment and labour law in Vancouver prior to her appointment at the UVIC Faculty of Law in 1992 where she teaches commercial and Indigenous law. She has served on numerous boards, commissions, and foundations such as the Law Foundation of BC, the BC Police Commission, and the BC Public Service Appeal Board.
Judy Rogers [bio]
Rogers is a senior advisor on government affairs, communications and workplace diversity issues to private and public-sector companies, crown corporations and not-for-profit agencies. She spent more than 20 years at the City of Vancouver, eventually becoming City Manager.
Rogers is Chair of 2010 Legacies Now, Vice-Chair of the UBC Alumni Association, Director of the BC Assessment Authority, and co-Chair of Capilano University Masters' Advisory Committee. She has an Honourary Doctor of Laws from Capilano University, a Masters in Public Administration from UVic, and a Bachelors degree from UBC.
Richard Whittall [bio]
Based in Vancouver, Richard Whittall has spent the past 20 years in investment banking, advising domestic and international companies in fundraising, mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and strategic business alliances. He co-founded Watershed Capital Partners and has been its President since 1996. Before that, Whittall held executive positions with various Canadian investment dealers, and currently serves as a director of several public and private companies. He holds degrees from the University of British Columbia and University of Cambridge.
Sandra Wilking [bio]
Wilking is a Citizenship Judge for British Columbia. She has been a Special Program Advisor for Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. A former Vancouver City Councillor, her community involvement has included being a volunteer board member with various non-profit organizations such as Vancouver Foundation, SUCCESS, Laurier Institution, United Way of the Lower Mainland, and Imagine Canada. She has also been a corporate director on C.T. Financial Inc. and advisory member to AT&T Canada.
Wong founded M.K. Wong & Associates Ltd. (MKW) in 1980 to provide investment-counseling service to pension plans, foundations, mutual funds and individuals. HSBC acquired MKW in 1996 and Wong is currently (non executive) Chairman of HSBC Investments Canada Limited managing over $5 billion in assets. He has been awarded the Civic Merit Award from the City of Vancouver; the Distinguished Leadership Award and an Honorary Doctorate of Law degree from Simon Fraser University, and is also their Chancellor Emeritus at Simon Fraser University. He has been the recipient of the Order of Canada; the Order of British Columbia; the Honour Roll distinction from MacLean's magazine; The Ernst & Young Lifetime Achievement Award for 2002 and The Ernst & Young Socially Responsible Entrepreneur of the Year in 1994.
Yosef Wosk [bio]
Wosk is the Director of Interdisciplinary Programs in Continuing Studies and an Associate Member (Adjunct Professor) of the Department of Humanities at Simon Fraser University where he has developed seminal programs such as The Philosophers' Café and The Canadian Academy of Independent Scholars. In addition to receiving an honorary doctorate of letters, he holds doctorates in Religion & Literature as well as in Psychology, and masters degrees in Education and in Theology.
Wosk, who is an ordained rabbi, has lectured at a number of universities and institutes of higher learning throughout the world. Identified as one of the top ten thinkers and most thoughtful citizens in the province, he is an appointed member of The Order of British Columbia, a recipient of The Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal and included in Canadian Who's Who. Active in communal affairs - especially in the areas of education, libraries, museums, the arts, social services, heritage conservation, philanthropy and religion - Wosk is a media commentator, public speaker and published author.

They represent a mix of high profile British Columbians, community and corporate leaders, past board or committee members, and influential persons from a diversity of sectors and backgrounds that have a commitment to the goals of Vancouver Foundation.
