Youth Homelessness
Introduction
Currently, approximately 700 youth are homeless in Vancouver, and many more are estimated to be homeless in metro Vancouver. Without adequate housing and support, young people have difficulty making progress in their lives, and risk becoming chronically homeless. Vancouver Foundation identified a gap in services to this vulnerable group, and created its Youth Homelessness Initiative. The Initiative supports local efforts to link our most vulnerable young people to housing and support services that break the cycle of homelessness.
This Initiative focuses on youth from age 16 to 24. Youth who are homeless include those sleeping on the streets and in shelters as well as youth who are staying on a friend’s couch, squatting or living in poor or unsuitable conditions.
Purpose
The Initiative provides grants to organizations focused on increasing access to housing and support services for youth experiencing homelessness.
Goals
- Make a significant contribution to addressing youth homelessness through granting, convening and partnership activities in metro Vancouver.
- Support approaches that increase access to housing for youth experiencing homelessness in Metro Vancouver, and help youth maintain their housing.
- Support initiatives that involve young people in developing, implementing and evaluating the projects.
- Encourage projects that build on strategies that are proven to be effective, as well as innovative approaches with a strong chance of success that could serve as a model to others.
- Foster projects that strengthen the community’s capacity to respond to youth homelessness and emphasize collaboration and formal partnerships with other agencies in the field.
