Vancouver Foundation saddened by death
of former Chief Justice Donald Brenner
March 14, 2011 -- Vancouver Foundation’s Board and staff expressed deep sadness at the passing of Donald Brenner, former Chief Justice of the BC Supreme Court, who died suddenly on Saturday.
“Don served on our Foundation’s board for about 11 years, and chaired almost every one of our granting committees,” noted Jake Kerr, Chair. “Despite an enormously busy professional schedule, he dedicated countless hours to the community through his work with Vancouver Foundation.
“I can think of few people I have worked with who possessed such grace, style and intelligence along with an incredibly strong commitment to the public good,” added Kerr.
Those sentiments were echoed by others who volunteered with Brenner at the Foundation. John McLernon, Vice-Chair said, “This indeed is most tragic and very sad. Don had great vitality and wisdom. This is a big loss to all who knew him and to our British Columbia community as a whole.”
Vancouver Foundation extends its deepest sympathy to his wife Robin and two daughters, and thanks them for supporting Donald’s work during the many years he served with the Foundation.
With more than 1,300 funds, and assets of $720 million, Vancouver Foundation is Canada's largest community foundation. Since it was founded in 1943, Vancouver Foundation, in partnership with its donors, has distributed about $800 million to BC charities.
