Alan Leard Memorial Fund

Alan Leard, born in his beloved Vancouver on May 21, 1933, was a seventh generation Canadian, descended from the first wave of settlers from Ireland to Prince Edward Island in the 1700s. He graduated from Lord Byng High School in 1951 and obtained his Certified General Accountant designation at night school while working full time. After taking on various accounting roles until the age of 50, Alan changed direction and ventured into property development and construction. He was a hard worker that always showed fairness, gregariousness and a sense of humour. It was “the measure of the man” that even while facing physical adversity in his last months, he engaged in witty banter and friendly sarcasm with hospital staff and family to ease their stress and sadness.

Alan, lovingly known as Gramps, passed away at the age of 83 after a short but valiant battle with cancer. He is sorely missed by Pat, his wife of nearly 62 years, partner-in-life and best friend, son Doug (Melanie), daughters Karen (Bernard), Jan (David), nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Alan loved people. But above all, he loved his family and especially his wife, his Tiger.

Alan loved people. He loved engaging family, friends and strangers in light-hearted conversation and debate. He loved providing help and encouragement, whether it was related to accounting, fixing just about anything, or constructing a house addition. But above all, he loved his family and especially his wife, his Tiger. They were inseparable and so obviously devoted to each other that they infused an aura of love all around them. Alan is irreplaceable but his sage advice, wit, special expressions, and favourite songs will forever remain with all who loved him.

Alan was a staunch Vancouver man and frequently directed his efforts to improving community and services in the city of his birth. For this reason, his family has established a fund through the Vancouver Foundation and any donations made in Alan’s memory will be directed to improve the health, vibrancy, and livability of Vancouver.
