Vancouver Island University Foundation
Vancouver Island University (VIU) is the largest multi-campus post secondary educational institution on Vancouver Island in BC. VIU’s roots date back to the Dominion Vocational School, founded in 1936 and Malaspina College, founded in 1969. The two merged in 1971, and Malaspina University-College gained full university status as VIU in 2008. As a teaching-centred, primarily undergraduate, four-year public post-secondary institution, VIU is a major contributor to the culture, economy and knowledge base on Vancouver Island and the central coast of British Columbia. The student body is 9% Aboriginal, and VIU served 1,599 Aboriginal students in the 2007/08 academic year, which is the second highest enrollment of any university in BC.
