BC Indigenous Community Based Mentorship Program Supporting Indigenous Nurses for Success

Indigenous Peoples are committed to advancing the health and wellness of communities. Given the current health care crisis, the numbers and retention of Indigenous nurses must increase to provide needed culturally safe care. A BC Indigenous community based mentorship program proposes strategies to ensure success of Indigenous nursing students and retention of employed Indigenous nurses. Partnerships with Indigenous community leaders and organizations, and BC schools of nursing will build on a community needs based framework. Ensuring Indigenous peoples are fully represented in healthcare roles, has far-reaching implications for the health of Indigenous individuals and communities.

Redefining Get Outside BC (RGOBC)

RGOBC will change the way we act, what we believe and potentially the resources that flow to youth-centered programing. First, CPAWS-BC will accept that our current model of hosting a single summit in the Lower Mainland as the primary tool for youth engagement and leadership training is flawed. Instead, with the Vancouver Foundation’s support, we will host a four-day youth summit in Central Vancouver Island, the Okanagan, and the Kootenays, as well as focus and planning groups in various regions. To date, most youth programs are devised in Vancouver and implemented elsewhere. RGOBC will be devised and implemented locally, leaving space for the influence and sharing of ideas from other regions, ensuring a wider range of voices and experience are incorporated. Youth and a diverse group of educators, leaders and social innovators will collaborate in the program with the intention of critiquing, deconstructing and rebuilding the structure and approach. Youth will lead all aspects of the process. Non-youth participants, including potential corporate funders, will be engaged in the program, but will take guidance from youth throughout. It will help create “buy-in” for the concept and program, since adults will be part of the larger systemic change and will be asked to be a part of the long-term funding plan. The final program outcomes will be shared with the broader environmental community in an effort to change the wider movement. CPAWS-BC will demonstrate that change is possible

"I CAN Volunteer" Program

The "I CAN Volunteer" program is designed to encourage participants' development of professional experience and employable skills, facilitating their transitions into the workforce. The program is designed to focus on problem solving, creative thinking, proficiency and leadership abilities. The program provides a series of workshops followed by a practical experience portion within our existing programs. The workshops are conducted with a view to progressive behavioural skills training, where the skills emphasized within each session build upon those developed in the preceding workshop. Each workshop is structured to facilitate skill development by breaking each lesson into individual components of instruction, modelling, testing, and constructive feedback. The practical experience portion grants participants the opportunity to internalize the skills emphasized within the workshops, and to gain practical work experience in a sports and recreation environment. Staff will work to tailor the program, both workshops and volunteer opportunities, to the specific needs of each participant.

CLICK (a social photography program)

CLICK is a social photography program for teens aged 13-17 living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). While working with their peers, groups of ten teens with ADS will learn basic camera use, take pictures and explore social skills and friendship through their own photography. Each session, participants will have the opportunity to share their photos and discuss the subject matter of their work. The participants will also be expected to take photos with the group during each lesson as well as take photos during the week while they are not at CLICK. The program will end with a gallery show of everyone's work presented to a group of staff, family and friends. The program will be led by a fully qualified photography instructor and supported by Canucks Autism Network program staff.

Social Innovation Cohort: Our Community Vision for Mental Health

A grant to participate in a development process to explore ideas around utilizing the experiential knowledge of participants and includes two key components: community participatory research and a grassroots visioning process. Through the participatory research portion of the project we are seeking to contribute to a broadened understanding of the societal and social determinants of mental health, especially the issues and barriers specifically faced by low-income DTES resident with mental illness. This first phase has already started and we have been having regular weekly meetings to plan the research process. Building on research findings emerging from the first phase, our second objective is to co-create a shared community vision of mental health in the DTES. By engaging in practical community research and knowledge production, participants not only learn new skills but see themselves in a position of competence, as experts of their own health and wellbeing, while also obtaining valuable knowledge and information about the structures surrounding them. This approach will combine participation and knowledge to foster DTES residents confidence and leadership abilities to meaningfully participate in decision-making forums and processes, sustain broader community involvement, and work with related community groups to build consensus, strength and new relationships towards improving their own mental health as well as the wider health of their families and community.

Our Community Vision for Mental Health

The project is based on the recognition that housing is a primary and fundamental social determinant of mental health. It seeks to give low-income Downtown Eastside residents living with mental illness, trauma, and disability the power to contribute to—and seek knowledge about—their health by developing a new “residents first” approach to supportive housing provision and management. Their influence is integral to bettering social housing. We will facilitate spaces to draft and establish best practices and guidelines for meeting and decision-making. We observe an urgent need to work well in coalition, in good communication with other organizations, groups, networks, and services and we can contribute to their longevity. Part of our work will be to strengthen our community member's capacity to participate in decision-making structures. Through visual description, creative form, mapping, media we will address language barriers related to literacy and translation. We can influence the representation of our community. This work will advance our knowledge of supportive housing provision. Amplifying residents' voices and experience informed and grounded in the experience and needs of existing and future social housing residents. As a peer-led project, this plan will have at its core the fundamental belief that people living with mental illness, addictions, and poverty should be able to make basic decisions concerning the day-to-day activities in their lives and homes.

Fascieux Creek Restoration and Habitat Conservation

In 2010, Ecole KLO Middle School students discovered Western Painted turtle eggs in their long jump sandpit. In the 1980’s, the part of Fascieux Creek, which bisects school property, was diverted into a culvert and covered with concrete pads interrupting the flow of the stream and destroying the turtle and fish habitat. When the eggs were discovered, the sandpit was fenced to protect the turtles, however, recognizing that only the restoration of the creek would ensure the future of the turtles, the students decided to naturalize the creek and restore the terrestrial and aquatic habitats. In 2010-11, the students and Green Parent Committee engaged Golder Associates, an environmental consulting firm, to complete a conceptual design on an in-kind basis. In 2012, CONC agreed to provide volunteer labor, funding help and expertise on creek and habitat restoration. Golder will do the Natural Environment Development Permit Application process and Environmental Impact Assessment, the procurement of all permits and determining the resources necessary to complete the earthworks.

Social Media Based Knowledge Hub: Facilitating Access to Knowledge

Building on the momentum of CU Expo 2008, held in Victoria, BC, CU Expo 2011 aims to highlight the use of creative methods of research to meet community needs and produce results that are important and useful to community members, academics, and policy makers. The conference, running from May 10-14, 2011 in Waterloo, Ontario, is expected to bring together 800 people from six continents. Many of the people who were present in Victoria in 2008 are expected to attend. However many more people in British Columbia and around the world are passionate about the power of community-based research to effect change, yet are unable to attend the conference in person. This project seeks to extend and enrich the conference experience both for those who attend the conference and for those who are unable to attend in person by using readily accessible social media tools including Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and web conferencing technology to create a Knowledge Hub. The Hub provides a participatory, interactive and inclusive way to share and discuss knowledge presented at CU Expo 2011.

Towards the development of a marine mammal conservation and education program

Our mission is to protect the lives of whales living in or transiting through Johnstone & Georgia Straits while at the same time educating the public about their responsibilities while on the water. Through our programs Straitwatch and Robson Bight Wardens, we engage directly with the public, alerting them to their impact on whales and other marine mammals. We also intervene directly, diverting pleasure and fishing boats from, intentionally or not, harassing or endangering whales. Recreational boating along the BC coast is steadily increasing. This has created an almost untenable situation for the region's orcas and other cetaceans. Death and injury by propellers and abandoned fishing gear, endless noise, disruption of travelling pods and sleep lines, and the relentless invasion of their space has created an ever-more precarious existence for these animals, whose abilities to thrive or even exist are already under threat from over-fishing and climate change. In order to ensure these animals' ability to survive and prosper, it is crucial not only to continue our efforts to inform the public and protect the whales directly; we must also shift the paradigm through which we perceive our relationship with and responsibility to wildlife. Our intention is to broaden the spectrum of those responsible for the welfare and protection of whales from a small coterie of "experts" to the broader public as a whole.

Check Your Head: The Youth Global Education Network

Youth Building a New Economy

The goal of this project is to engage young people in re-imagining our current economic system and to give them the tools to build it, while also strengthening their economic independence. To realize this goal, Check Your Head will deliver an economic justice leadership program, that builds on our successful model of peer-led youth engagement. Youth aged 17-24 will be trained as peer educators to reach to other youth through workshops, events and actions that foster socially innovative economic change. The project focus areas that will help to advance this social innovation are: 1) Making a living (skills development and employment opportunities for youth participating in the project); 2) Making most of the available resources (financial literacy, learning about informal and sharing economies, and the ways to utilize them for Metro Vancouver youth); 3) Creating a better economic system (contributing to systemic change through youth-led policy and advocacy). These areas are mutually reinforcing and will create a comprehensive multi-level effort that will make a difference for youth in Metro Vancouver. All project activities will create opportunities for youth to find solutions around these three broad areas. As with all our work, we will be using an anti-oppressive and intersectional framework, which recognizes that individuals face systemic discrimination and barriers based on class, race, gender and other factors that intersect in complex ways.

The Lego Lounge: A new RMH BC, a room full of Lego for sick children and their families: this innovative program at the new Ronald McDonald House will go a long way to easing the burdens of the life-threatening illnesses these families face. It will be the first Lego program at any Ronald McDonald House in the world. All children need a safe place to play in good weather and bad, and our Lego Lounge will provide that space. Your help today will ensure that children who are in the various stages of critical care, together with their siblings and parents, will have a unique place to safely play inside, have fun and let go of their cares for a while. But the Lego Lounge is much more than a playroom. Lego is a toy that is familiar to so many children. It helps break down barriers and allows kids to meet and play with other kids. Our bi-weekly programs with a Lego Certified Professional and members of the Vancouver Lego Club will be an opportunity for kids to explore new ways to build with Lego, and take them away from the hospital environment and into a world of imagination

Social Innovation Cohort: Transforming Food Outreach Programs

A grant to participate in a development process ito explore the connection between and amongst volunteers, participants, and outside supports, with the goal of re-designing our programs to increase connectivity and reduce social isolation. This will be achieved by: • Reviewing the Cathedral’s existing food outreach and its suitability for the homeless population in the downtown business district through - Consulting with existing participants to determine their own needs and reasons for participating in the Cathedral’s food outreach programs - Consulting with existing volunteers to determine their own needs and reasons for participating in the Cathedral’s food outreach programs - Consulting with other downtown churches and service providers to assess current services in the immediate area • Prototyping, workshopping and designing opportunities – with the assistance of volunteers and participants – new or re-envisioned program offerings that respond to the most clearly articulated needs - Surveying the Cathedral’s volunteer database to determine availability and willingness to serve in these ways - Developing and/or strengthening partnerships with other service providers and voluntary organizations in downtown Vancouver that will help respond to these needs - Identifying trained professionals who can assist with new initiatives as identified in project plan

The Maundy Cafe

Systemic change beyond the Cathedral relies on vulnerably sharing the lessons learned through our year-long program transformation process with faith-based organizations seeking a way to deepen community engagement. This project will catalyze systemic change by building on faith leaders’ recognition of social isolation as a major issue facing their communities and neighbourhood networks. By sharing our experiences we will encourage other organizations to take similar risks to address the bigger issues of loss of community and economic bifurcation. The project will create toolkits, training programs, and workshops that will help other faith-based organizations to transform the entire process of food preparing, serving, composting, and cleaning into the vehicle by which inclusion, participation and community resiliency can be strengthened. We will also influence systemic change through the provision of focused opportunities for study and practical hands-on learning. In collaboration with our partners including other non-profits and local businesses, we will host public keynote events focused on how others can address social isolation, as well as workshops and voluntary opportunities for enterprises looking to channel their corporate social responsibility.

Circle F Horse Rescue is currently in a transition stage from operating as a volunteer organization to having engaged a part time paid manager. Circle F is reviewing all of its policies, procedures, organizational charts and task descriptions in preparing for a paid executive position. During this time Circle F will also establish a funding strategy that will assure Circle F sustainability. To achieve the desired results it is proposed to engage a consultant to assist with the following aspects: 1. Board development: taking the board from a hands on board to a governance model. 2. Discussions with leadership volunteers regarding their roles and making the adjustment to work with an executive director. 3. A session or sessions with the volunteer membership base to listen to their perspectives and to have them buy into the transition. 4. Assist in developing a fund development strategy that will maintain and enhance Circle F. 5. To advise the manager in this six month process with recommendations for board consideration.

Nelson Civic Theatre Restoration

We intend to renovate the theatre to better facilitate cinematic and performing arts. We have already installed seats, purchased and installed a new digital projector and surround sound system, constructed temporary acoustic walls and set up a simple online ticketing system. This project will include: -schematic design and design development for the entire project -lobby renovation work and installation of new concession equipment -a new energy efficient mechanical air handling unit -electrical system upgrades for the theatre: replacing the current patchwork of panels,old wiring and obsolete equipment with a new dimmer panel and controls, new aisle lights for patron safety, and a rationalization of all the theatre wiring to allow for central dimming control. -new energy efficient lighting A subsequent project will involve renovation of the theatre into three separate spaces.

New Westminster Food Summit and Food Security Action Plan & Sustainability Framework - DEVELOP GRANT

A key social issue that the project is trying to address is the lack of equitable access to healthy, nutritious and culturally-appropriate food in New Westminster. A key focus of the food security summit is to identify gaps, needs and opportunities; enhance access and expand availability and choice of food; and, facilitate capacity, collaboration and relationship-building among food providers, as well as to share information about new models and delivery systems. The final product will be a food security action plan and sustainability framework, which will guide the City and its community partners into the future, and assist in implementing the City's Community Poverty Reduction Strategy.

Cultivating Wellness Connections in Richmond

Origin- In 2008 with seed funding from the Union of BC Municipalities, Minoru Seniors Society (MSS) together with City of Richmond Senior Services (CORSS) and key community stakeholders, undertook an innovative pilot program to promote social participation and inclusion among vulnerable and isolated older adults. Adapted from leisure education and participation framework Wellness Connections (WC) received a BCRPA Provincial Award of Program Excellence, and was sustained through Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) funding. Need- WC has served more than 500 English and Mandarin/Cantonese speaking older adults over 7 years. WC plays a unique role in the network of community programs older adults facing multiple barriers to social participation and access to health services. While some are being served, many are not, and the need for high-quality programs that support independence and health is growing, while programs and services are decreasing. Project- With VCH funding for WC now at an end (March 2015), our project aims to harness and expand the successful collaborative approach to serving vulnerable older adults using a community-based participatory research (CBR) process. WC has enable us to build relationships with hundreds of vulnerable older adults in Richmond, providing an unique opportunity in involve them in further breaking down the barriers to social participation and inclusion together with a rich variety of community stakeholders.

Civic Orchestra Society of Victoria

Symphonic Masterworks

The 'Symphonic Masterworks' project is the third concert in the Civic Orchestra of Victoria's concert season, taking place on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at the Alix Goolden Performance Hall in Victoria, BC. This concert will be directed by renowned conductor Yariv Aloni and features the Victoria-based soprano Susan Young, who will be the solo singer in Edward Elgar's 'Sea Pictures'. The rehearsals for this concert will begin on January 15, occurring once a week until the concert. The complete program includes the 'Rosamunde Overture' by Franz Schubert, 'Sea Pictures' by Edward Elgar, and Cesar Franck's Symphony in d minor. All three pieces are staples of the orchestral repertoire and will provide an engaging concert for both the musicians and for the audience. This project will involve 50 orchestral musicians of varying ages and abilities, as well as a professional conductor and soloist. Many of the musicians volunteer to fill a variety of positions, including Librarian and Stage Manager, to help make this project successful.

Food security exists when everyone has physical and economic access to adequate amounts of nutritious and culturally-appropriate food. In the Alberni Clayoquot region, food security is a significant concern, with high rates of poverty and one of the highest rates of child poverty in BC. We have many rural and remote communities, high food prices, transporation barriers and a high cost of living. Our goal is to create a collaborative action plan including our communities, First Nations, organizations, schools, and businesses to find innovative but practical action for policy and social change to meet the food security needs identified in poverty reduction planning with our local leaders.

Generation Y-Not?: Growing Local Leaders

Our goal is to create an action plan for sustained engagement of youth in leadership initiatives and civic engagement. We will seek direction from youth. How do they want to be involved in their communities? What is meaningful to them? The project begins in June 2013 with a relationship-building activity sponsored by the CBT and partners. This will give youth and youth leaders from throughout the region a chance to connect and hear about successful youth leadership activities. They will share the programs they've enjoyed, develop strategies to further these projects and envision the leadership programs and youth-led projects that are most meaningful and relevant. Following the forum, we will facilitate up to five regional youth gatherings based on objectives identified by the youth. The gatherings will be diverse and varied, hosted in communities throughout the region. This takes youth from across the region out of 'their boxes' to participate in activities that foster cultural learning, develop leadership skills and build capacity in our communities.

Sustainability Studies Curriculum Development

The Clayoquot Biosphere Trust is excited to develop curriculum for an upper-level, elective course entitled Sustainability Studies to be offered in our region. The aim of the course is build environmental awareness and leadership in high school students through innovative education. Sustainability Studies content will be relevant to students. Clayoquot Sound provides an ideal setting to introduce youth to a wide variety of perspectives, enabling in-depth and holistic investigations essential to understanding environmental issues. The region is also fortunate to host many local experts, from First Nations elders to scientists, who will be invited to work with the students. The course will focus on the connection between people and their environment, with units on topics such as sustainable development, ecosystem-based management and civic engagement. The content will be developed through a collaborative process with input from students and teachers. As a regularly offered elective, the course will create an ongoing structure for youth engagement and hands-on learning.

Steamboat Mountain Music Festival

This year our music festival dates are July 6 & 7, 2013. We are adding an additional day this year due to overwhelming interest in our festival. The festival starts on Saturday at noon with 50 minute acts and then while our stage crew gets ready for the next act we will have a 'tweener' (comprised of youth and older aspiring amateur musicians) entertain the crowds. This schedule will run alld day Saturday until 10 pm and continue on Sunday from noon to four. On Sunday morning we will be offering two music workshops for free to the attendees, a chance to meet some of the musicans and learn about a specific part of music. In the afternoon we are planning a kids festival with two musical acts and various activities to entertain children, young and young at heart. For the duration of the festival we will have food vendors as well as other vedors selling their wares. We will be partnering with The Edgewater Recreation Society, The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #199, The Rocky Mountain School District #6, business and non-profit organizations in our area.
