There are many factors holding people in poverty, including mental and physical health issues, addiction, inadequate housing, and unemployment. People who experience these issues have barriers to traditional employment like a full-time, 9-5 job. Additionally, individuals on social assistance, like welfare, have limits to the amount they can earn before assistance is reduced or taken away. Binners’ Project is working to test ways to set binners up for success so they can be employed without losing their social assistance before they are ready. We also provide flexible and informal opportunities for work that recognize binners may not have the desire or capacity to work full-time.
