Trailblazers

Only 50% of First Nations and Aboriginal youth in BC graduate high school. This project will produce a multi-part journalism series that aims to promote academic success among First Nations and Aboriginal youth by identifying new and innovative policies, practices and achievable solutions for improving educational outcomes. Interviews with 'trailblazers' - First Nations and Aboriginal individuals with advanced degrees – will shed light on the hurdles which almost thwarted their achievements, providing a gateway for identifying policies that can help ensure these obstacles are not insurmountable for future generations. Trailblazer profiles will serve as a starting point for further discussion with educators and administrators to explore, analyze and identify potential new policies and approaches that can promote educational success. The project will not only serve policy makers and educators, but will provide Aboriginal and First Nations youth with inspirational success stories to encourage higher education aspirations and promote self-appreciation of their culture and identity.

The Writers' Exchange "Who Am I?" project

During the "Who Am I?" project, the Writers' Exchange will work in schools, with teachers and community partners, to run a year-long project that will culminate in twelve classes producing publications of student writing on the topic of "Who Am I?". The project originated when inner-city teachers and administrators expressed to the Writers' Exchange the need for creative literacy programming and one-on-one attention for their students in their classrooms to help increase literacy levels. o During the project, students will write and create with one-on-one help from volunteer tutors. o Each student will play a part in producing a class publication. From rough drafts to cover art, the students will create a professionally printed and bound publication that they will be able to take home, take pride in and share with their caregivers. o The Writers' Exchange will work with each teacher to tailor the "Who Am I?" project to the classroom's needs, the Ministry of Education's curriculum goals and the grade's prescribed learning outcomes.

Protecting Fish Habitat and Freshwater in the Upper Fraser Basin

This project will further the work between the First Nations of the Yinka Dene Alliance (YDA) and Dr. Jack Stanford, a Professor of Ecology at the University of Montana specializing in river and freshwater ecology. It will combine Dr. Stanford’s impact assessment of the proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline on the Sutherland, Stuart, and Salmon Rivers within the YDA traditional territories with the traditional ecological knowledge holders of the YDA First Nations. The final results will inform the YDA traditional decision-making process.

The Best Laid Plans

Touchstone Theatre proposes to adapt into musical theatre form Terry Fallis' award-winning novel 'The Best Laid Plans' (CBC Canada Reads 2011, Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour), one of Canada's most popular and successful works of fiction in recent years. A creative and producing partnership with Patrick Street Productions, the book is by one of the country's hottest playwrights, Vern Thiessen, with music and lyrics by the outrageously gifted local team of Benjamin Elliott and Anton Lipovetsky. The finished work will be a mid-sized musical for nine actor/singers and a small ensemble of musicians. Ideally suited to musical adaptation, the novel's characters are big and the stakes are high, but it is deeply honest -- wildly entertaining with serious undercurrents. Touchstone and PSP, drawing on their combined expertise in musical theatre and Touchstone's in new play development, are ushering the piece through an extensive development process in preparation for its world premiere in the fall of 2015 at the Cultch Historic Theatre, which will undoubtedly draw national attention.

Building Community through Digital Story (BCDS)

Building on a successful pilot project - where participants worked through the composition of story, collected photo & video to support their stories, & explored creative ways to enhance story using technology & multi-media equipment and software– this new Building Community through Digital Story (BCDS) project puts the development & power of storytelling in the hands of our community and youth, and offers educational and professional-level training. Upon completion participants will receive a certificate of completion. Through a partnership with Royal Roads University and with in-kind support from additional partners, Tsawout's Snepeneks Cultural Society is building opportunities in education by offering this multidisciplinary course that will provide: 1) Opportunities for youth and elders to work together in the preservation of language and culture, 2) opportunities for an exchange of skills and knowledge, youth using media, and elders and traditional knowledge, and 3) Opportunities to re-engage youth in education, , cultural practices, community events, and training.

Visualizing Urban Futures with Community Energy

Public understanding and behaviour change on energy use is critical to reducing carbon footprints and building resilient communities. Since the idea of low-carbon community-wide energy systems is new in Canada, most people have little idea how typical neighbourhoods in Metro Vancouver can be retrofitted to be climate friendly. CALP proposes to engage communities, using compelling new visualisation tools to actively involve non-experts in learning about community energy. This proposal builds on an ongoing research study with Neptis Foundation and the GEOIDE Network Centre of Excellence, which is developing prototype visualization tools - "digital stories" about community energy, based on data in two pilot BC municipalities: Richmond and Surrey. This project will help build awareness and community capacity for climate change solutions. It will involve multiple stakeholders in developing a visual information toolkit for use in demonstrations, workshops, and web media to reach the "silent majority" who are often not engaged in social learning and community decision-making.

Building Resiliency: Growing Food and Farmers

Four-Season Food Literacy: Hands-On Training for Farmers & Eaters (FSFL) will provide season extension education & training for aspiring & established farmers, gardeners, urban farmers and the general public. By modeling 4 methods of protected agriculture (hoophouses, high & low tunnels, and cold frames) we will provide the basis for hands-on workshops on season extension for all growers. The curriculum of our Practicum in Sustainable Agriculture (PSA) will be diversified to include season extension practices and we will expand the physical space used for farmer training. The increased scope of the PSA will help us provide aspiring agriculturalists with high-quality, hands-on, experiential training in ecologically based growing methods that will prepare them to meet today’s farming challenges. We willl present workshops to the general public that will equip Vancouverites with the necessary skills to eat locally year-round. FSFL has the overarching goal of creating a more food & farming literate population that can grow & eat more food year-round, increasing local food system resiliency.

Witnesses: Indian Residential Schools and Art

The exhibition 'Witnesses: Indian Residential Schools and Art' will present artists who have produced work arising from the history of Indian Residential Schools (IRS) in Canada. It coincides with and is related to, yet independent from, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) National Event that will take place in Vancouver from September 18 to 21, 2013. It will also be an important component of the UBC First Nations House of Learning programming around this event. The planned exhibition will include ten to fifteen artists from British Columbia and across Canada who have produced a substantive body of artwork addressing Indian Residential Schools. It will be cross-generational and include iconic artworks by artists who directly experienced Indian Residential Schools such as Norval Morrisseau, Carl Beam, Beau Dick, Joane Cardinal-Schubert, Faye Heavyshield, and Alex Janvier as well as those artists who are witnesses to its residual impact such as Chris Bose, Cathy Busby, Lisa Jackson, Tania Willard, and Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun

"Amlilas": Toward a 'Namgis Community-Driven Curriculum for Early Childhood Development'

This project addresses an identified priority of the 'Namgis First Nations people living in Alert Bay, British Columbia - to enhance the cultural relevance of early childhood education (ECE) so that children are entrenched in their language and cultural practices from their earliest days. Amlilas is the community's existing early childhood program. Through a community-based participatory process, we will build on the existing strengths of this program to support a more culturally relevant curriculum - creating a place where young 'Namgis children learn within their cultural traditions and language. Drawing on existing indicators of early childhood development and data generated in this project, we will propose curricular strategies reflecting unique dimensions of ECD within this community. The knowledge generated in this project will enhance the cultural relevance of ECD for 'Namgis First Nation children and contribute to knowledge informing ECD curricular planning and implementation within First Nations communities in British Columbia.

Aging Out of Foster Care in B.C. Study Circles

Working with the Canadian Federation of University Women-BC Council and their clubs around the province, this project will explore the challenges facing young people aging out of foster care in B.C. by organising a working group to review and update the Study Circle Facilitators Guide, by training adult and experiential facilitators, by hosting a series of local study groups through CFUW-BC clubs across the province, by facilitating an Action Forum, and by distributing the Facilitators Guide, Action Ideas Pamphlet, and Final Report to clubs, study circle participants, and community organisations. We intend to hire an experiential young person with facilitation skills to coordinate the provincial activities and an adult co-facilitator to assist with developing the guide, facilitating training and hosting the Action Forum.

Fostering Change in Surrey: Wrapping the Community Around Kids Leaving Care

The Surrey Poverty Reduction Coalition (SPRC) exists to foster collaboration in Surrey to address the unique challenges of people living in poverty. With our diverse membership and strong links with the City of Surrey, we are well placed to bring together the various sectors that will be needed to make a deep and lasting impact in the lives of some of our most vulnerable young people. Using the framework of “THIS is how we end poverty in Surrey”, which focuses on four key policy areas that affect people living in poverty: Transportation, Housing, Income and Supports, and working in partnership with youth in/from care, the SPRC will engage the community to do a radical rethinking of the ways in which youth are supported when they transition from the care of the MCFD, into adulthood. Bringing our whole community along, including business, philanthropists, unions, etc. we are keenly interested in rethinking the way that we meet the needs of these young people, and helping them to be supported in achieving their aspirations. Using a collective impact approach, we will: compile available information and research on youth in/from care in Surrey; convene two multi-stakeholder workshops toward developing a framework for further action; and host a public event that will include the "The 19th Birthday Party" art exhibit. All phases of the project will engage youth in/from care - "not about them without them".

Surrey Poverty Reduction Plan Implementation

Implementation of the Plan is underway. Steps have been taken to act on many of the recommendations of the Plan and there are a number of quality programs, projects and initiatives that address poverty in Surrey. This project will continue the work of promoting the Plan, undertaking or supporting existing and new projects and serving as a catalyst for the development of new initiatives. We will develop an evaluation framework for process and outcome evaluations of the Surrey Poverty Reduction Plan. In partnership with the business community we will initiate a project to provide support and education to landlords on housing the homeless in Surrey as well as identifying tenants who require resources and connecting them to support services. We will organize a Seeing is Believing tour for Surrey service clubs and a community forum to inform stakeholders on the implementation of the Plan. We will support and promote other poverty-reduction projects currently underway and disseminate poverty-related research data. These activities will be supported by a part-time coordinator.

DOUGLAS COUPLAND: everywhere is anywhere is anything is everything

It is the mandate of the Vancouver Art Gallery to contextualize regional experience and artistic concerns within national and international fields of cultural practice; to introduce local and visiting audience members to the important art of this region; and to expand expectations for what art can be. This project will present the visual art of Vancouver-based artist Douglas Coupland. It will highlight principle themes of the artist's investigations such as what defines national culture and the impact of media communications on contemporary life. The national and international profile of the artist will be greatly strengthened through the Vancouver exhibition (with several major new works including a large Lego project and The Brain installation), the first substantial book on the artist, an international tour (tbc), and an unprecedented use of communications media to reach the public. We are planning an energetic engagement with renewed and new audiences via social media and special programs for adults, children and youth.

MSG Theatre Lab

In 2009, actor-producer David C. Jones wrote a letter to vancouverplays.com, decrying the troubling absence of nonwhite faces on Vancouver’s stages. This letter triggered a flurry of responses from many Vancouver theatre artists. All agreed this lack of diversity would eventually doom Vancouver theatre into becoming socially irrelevant. Within such unforgiving cultural terrain, Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre plays a pivotal role in boldly promoting cultural diversity on Canada’s West Coast. Launched in 2012, our MSG Theatre Lab play development program addresses the challenge of visible minority underrepresentation by finding, developing and showcasing the next generation of Asian Canadian playwrights. Far more effective than simply encouraging diversity in casting, we believe writers alone possess the unique potential to create lasting change. The stories they choose to tell, and the characters they create have the power to affect the way people think and feel about the most important social issues of our time. Our aim is to create a canon of Asian Canadian plays ready to be produced professionally in Vancouver theatres. In doing so, we hope to create a series of cascading changes that will ultimately impact the entire cultural landscape in far-reaching ways.

Youth Engagement Project (YEP)

Working with students identified as at high risk of dropping out of school, the project has six elements: 1) engaging on a one to one basis with the students and their parents, working to keep the students in school and attending class; 2) bringing the students to the Homework Club three days a week for a minimum of six hours, providing access to Homework Club tutors and to hot meals served at the Club; 3) working with the students, using approved remediation programs, to develop their literacy and numeracy skills; 4) meeting with the students monthly over dinner to review their progress, plan for the month ahead and create supportive relations between the students in YEP and with the YEP workers. 5) providing a small monthly cash stipend to be spent under the direction of each student's YEP worker; 6) upon successfull completion of each school year, holding in trust a bursary of $500 for post-secondary education.

Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program

The “Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program" offers prison-based post-secondary academic courses to groups composed of both university students (hereinafter called outside learners) and incarcerated students (hereinafter called inside learners) who learn together. Founded in 1997 in Philadelphia by one university professor inspired by one incarcerated man, the program is based on the simple hypothesis that incarcerated men and women and college/university learners might mutually benefit from studying together as peers. Together, they build classroom communities based on dialogue, collaboration and serious, shared inquiry. The Inside-Out Program places a human face on justice issues while giving both inside and outside learners a powerful academic and experiential learning opportunity, grounded in a philosophy recognizing that each human being has innate worth and a story to tell. Expansion of Inside-Out into Canada offers the chance to implement and evaluate the program’s impact in a country with a different population and systems. VIU will be among the first five universities in Canada, and the second Criminology department, to offer Inside-Out, building on the successful experiences of over 140 US universities and colleges.

Black Strathcona Interactive Project

Black Strathcona is an innovative, interactive new media project celebrating Vancouver's vibrant black community that flourished in the East End neighbourhood of Strathcona (1920's -1970's). The project will consist of ten to twelve short video stories, highlighting the rich and cultural heritage of the community. The video stories will be presented by professionals and combines storytelling with rarely seen archival photographs and brings to life aspects of the community's history in the location it occurred. The project provides two access opportunities: 1) by a standard website where users can take a virtual tour of the culture, history, and personalities from anywhere in the world, and, 2) by using a mobile device such as a smart phone, anyone can access the rapidly downloadable 'mobile' site. The mobile website displays a map of the Strathcona neighbourhood with markers depicting the locations of the video stories. Vancouver Opera Association

Stickboy: a new chamber opera on the bullying cycle

In the Fall of 2014, VOA will commission a new chamber opera on the impact of bullying on youth: Stickboy. With a libretto penned by acclaimed Canadian spoken word artist Shane Koyczan and a score by celebrated BC composer Jordan Nobles, this 90-minute chamber opera will be adapted from Koyczan's 2008 novel chronicling his personal experiences as both a victim and perpetrator of childhood bullying. Workshops of this piece will showcase the Opera's second roster of Young Artists Program participants in principal roles. Following the completion of this phase, Stickboy will see its fully-staged and orchestrated premiere at the Vancouver Playhouse on October 23rd, 2014. It will serve as VOA's second 2014-15 mainstage offering. Supported by a substantial educational program, and utilizing the guidance of an expert advisory committee, Stickboy will subsequently be adapted and toured by way of VOA's 2014-15 Vancouver Opera In Schools (VOIS) program - thereby furthering the life of this commission and expanding its reach to nearly 50,000 province-wide.
