Growing Our Futures: Community Training in Native Plant Landscaping for Adult Indigenous Students

This social innovation project will deliver an eight week community-based, culturally sensitive, hands-on training program in native plant landscaping and restoration to 16 students on the Scia'new First Nation. The training program will provide participants with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to take advantage of employment opportunities in their community. These opportunities are especially strong given the partnership between the Scia'new Nation and Spirit Bay Developments on a 10 year plan to build a 500 + unit sustainable housing development. The project will influence systemic change towards increasing employment opportunities through incorporating Indigenous culture and traditions into education and employment training, an important element for increasing Indigenous participation in the labour market. The project will also create change through enabling community members to play a full role in a development occurring within their community. Similar developments often involve developers leasing property from First Nations and undertaking the development themselves. At Spirit Bay, ownership of the development is shared by the Trust for Sustainable Development (49%) and the Scia’new First Nation (51%) with the intention that the community meaningfully participates in the long term revenues and benefits generated. This project will provide community members with the skills to meaningfully participate in economic development on their own reserve.

A Regional Biodiversity Strategy for the Sunshine Coast

The Lagoon Society will work collaboratively with other organizations to engage residents in biodiversity conservation, conduct a biodiversity assessment, and develop a regional biodiversity conservation strategy. We will bring together existing information and conduct new inventories and assessments to evaluate the current status of biodiversity, assess threats, and identify high priority areas for conservation and restoration. We will bring together scientists, land managers and stakeholders at a 3-day summit to develop a biodiversity conservation framework with common objectives, coordinated strategies and effective measures to conserve, enhance and monitor biodiversity in the region. By carrying out diverse public outreach activities, we will encourage and enable residents to assist with biodiversity conservation. In the long-term, this project will increase the capacity of our community to undertake sound stewardship of biodiversity and ensure that our region maintains a connected, biologically diverse network of habitats, healthy, resilient ecosystems and ecosystem services.

Birds, Birds, Birds

In August 2018, scientists and bird enthusiasts from around the world will flock to the 27th International Ornithological Congress & 1st Vancouver International Bird Festival. We’ll greet them with a grand opening parade along the seawall. Birds on stilts! Bird puppets! Bird flags & Bird choruses, representing and celebrating local and migratory birds from our communities. Workshops between now and next summer in Vancouver, Victoria, Vernon and smaller communities will foster greater participation in the congress and festival, and create one large body of birds on stilts as the central parade element. Parade workshops in July/August will grow momentum leading up to the opening event.

The Academy is seeking support from the Vancouver Foundation to help us bring a world of musical opportunities to students from inner city schools. Addressing the critical need for high quality afterschool activities has been identified as a priority in supporting the well being of children, youth and families in our inner city neighbourhoods. We are seeking funding of $25,000 per year for three years to pay the salary of a Music Outreach Coordinator. This position will facilitate the expansion and development of our music program at three elementary schools. Their responsibilities would include: building strong partnerships with elementary school staff, securing teachers, scheduling of classes, transportation of students to the Academy, special events coordination and administration of the outreach program.

Parents As Literacy Supporters in Aboriginal Communities (APALS)

The "Parents As Literacy Supporters in Aboriginal Communities"; program, herein after referred to as "PALS", will be delivered in the common rooms of 5 Kekinow Native Housing Complexes and in 5 elementary schools (with highest Aboriginal populations) to increase participation levels of Aboriginal parents and their children (0-6) in mainstream Early Childhood Programs; promote positive home to school transitions; and ensure Aboriginal children are ready for school. An Aboriginal Early Childhood Educator and an Aboriginal Elder will engage approximately 300 Aboriginal children (100 per year), aged 0 - 6, and their families in APALS sessions throughout the course of three school years. Each session will consist of a wide range of fun, educational, and culturally appropriate early childhood development activities, such as: storytelling, singing, drumming, "Make and Take" cultural craft activities, circle time, group reading, group discussions, and literacy/numeracy activities. Families will also receive a culturally appropriate Aboriginal book at each session to take home and keep.

Through a Different Lens

The two components of our project will be to expand the number of teachers allowing students to use their preferred method of demonstrating their learning and to build the capacity of these teachers to assess the intended learning outcomes regardless of the methods students choose. Each of these components will require four steps: 1) The introduction of teaching and assessment strategies to allow for alternate demonstrations of understanding in regular classroom practice. 2) The actual implementation of new instructional and assessment methods. This stage will involve coaching by the mentor teachers as well as side-by-side teaching as these strategies are incorporated into actual classrooms. 3) The evaluation of the implementation process. 4) The re-adjusting of instruction and assessments. After the evaluation and reflection, adjustments will be made before similar strategies are implemented in the future. Our project will be implemented with groups of teachers from six schools: 2 elementary schools (K-5), 2 middle schools (6-8) and 2 Secondary Schools (9-12).

Quest for Science Fair Champions

This is the second year of a multi-year program, Quest for Science Fair Champions (Quest), designed to equip the science teachers of BC, from K-12, with the tools to implement inquiry-based instruction in their classrooms. In year one of the program, we recruited 20 teachers from 7 of the 14 Science Fair regions to 4 Smarter Science workshops held in Vancouver that provided these teachers with the skills to train their colleagues in inquiry-based science teaching. In turn, they provided shorter workshops to more than 500 additional teachers & are continuing this work. In year two, we expect to complete our coverage of the Province by holding the Smarter Science workshop component of the Quest program in Kelowna, Prince George & Fort St. John. As well, in partnership with the Office of Indigenous Education, Faculty of Education, Simon Fraser University (SFU), we will make a concerted effort to recruit teachers from areas with large concentrations of Aboriginal students, throughout the Province, in order to increase the participation rate of these students in the Science Fair program.

Shuswap Early Childhood Development Committee (ECDC) Project

The Shuswap ECDC project builds on the 2012 strategic plan which focuses on community issues and priorities that have been identified from the ECD committee, EDI research, local asset mapping, and also align with the goals of the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD), Interior Health, School District #83 and the Honorable Premier Christie Clark’s Family’s First Initiative and Healthy Families BC. The project builds on exisiting and succesful programs, initiatives and resources that the Shuswap ECDC has been developing and delivering for the past 6 years. These project proposal funds will be dedicated to assisting the costs for 2 Mother Goose outreach programs in rural Shuswap, the printing and distribution of Children's Services Directories, increasing the ECD coordination hours and co-resourcing a very much needed Family Support Worker position. Our goal is to reach families with children under the age of 6 and those who work in the field of ECD and family services. Our intention is to build strong and lasting partnerships for long term beneficial outcomes

Right Relations: Centering Indigenous Leadership for the Environmental Non-Profit Sector

This project provides an opportunity for an Indigenous youth to lead the development of a Sierra Club BC outings program, as well as engage with senior staff and a board committee to strengthen organizational policy and approach to Indigenous relations, with mentorship from Indigenous elders and Indigenous board members. Sierra Club BC's Board of Directors recently called for an Indigenous solidarity lens to be applied to all we do. This builds on steps already taken: recruiting two Indigenous directors to the board; cultural sensitivity training for all staff (through Indigenous Perspectives Society); educating board members (presentations from Indigenous directors, participatory blanket exercise, hearing from a local elder); convening an Indigenous Rights and Solidarity sub-committee of the board (to provide input and direction); revising our education programs to better respect Indigenous knowledges; and, across all campaigns, seeking to follow and uplift leadership of Indigenous peoples—e.g. our Pull Together initiative raises funds for Indigenous-led legal challenges. The outings project (launching January 2019) originated when T’Sou-ke Nation knowledge-keeper Charlene George~kQwa’ste’not approached us to co-develop with her a place-based program that would deepen Sierra Club BC’s relations with local nations, build respect for Indigenous worldviews, and highlight best practices for how ENGOs can be in ‘right relations’ with the land and Indigenous peoples.

Snuneymuxw First Nations

Snuneymuxw First Nation's House of Learning (in the Snuneymuxw community)

In September 2006, this Vancouver Island First Nation had 56 per cent unemployment. They conducted a community literacy survey and discovered that 64 per cent of their adult members were reading at a Grade 7 level or below. They created the House of Learning to address this issue. Vancouver Island University instructors teach day (literacy up to Grade 10) and evening classes (Grades 11 and 12) to approximately 25 adult students over three semesters. This creates a bridge for higher education, and an environment that is respectful and supportive.

Art for Change: Highlighting Youth Voices in Poverty Reduction Advocacy

This project aims to build momentum for the Fostering Change campaign goals through the engagement of youth in and from care in identifying and promoting systemic changes needed to reduce the incidence of poverty and its attendant vulnerabilities among BC youth leaving care. To this end we plan to facilitate a convening event with relevant FC coalition member organizations and other local organizations who have recently or are currently engaging youth in and from care in creative and artistic expression related to their experiences transitioning out of care. FC and SCY will support interested youth in being part of the team creating and animating the 2016 BC Child Poverty Report Card, to be published in November 2016. This engagement will offer participating youth opportunities to develop skills, knowledge and organizational connections, as well as experience advocating for the relevant public policy changes that would reduce poverty rates among youth leaving care. Furthermore, it would serve to uphold the youths’ right to have a say in the decisions that affect them.

Municipal Strategies for Implementing Child and Youth Friendly Communities

The concept of child and youth friendly communities (CYFC) is “not based on an ideal end state or a standard model. It is a framework to assist any city to become more child-friendly in all aspects of governance, environment and services*.” SCY will partner with the City of New Westminster (NW) and The City of Surrey Community and Recreation Services Department (CRS) to implement this concept. Results will be unique to each community depending on their particular needs and the stage to which they have already implemented CYFC concepts. NW is interested in an overarching CYFC vision to attach its initiatives and to engage more children, youth, and families in planning the CYFC vision. They have a particular interest in guidelines around family friendly housing. CRS is interested in how the CYFC vision and their existing city Child and Youth Friendly Strategy can shape the implementation of their 0-18 Framework, including staff training and department policies and practices. *BUILDING CHILD FRIENDLY CITIES, A Framework for Action (page 2-3), UNICEF, 2004

Marginalized populations have less access to local healthy food because of systemic barriers caused by unemployment and low income, rising food prices, inappropriate public responses to their food security needs, and literacy barriers. Most programmes improving food security for marginalized groups are based on a charitable model of hand-outs. This project will create new knowledge about the ways in which marginalized groups can be supported to gain dignified access to healthy food, leading to changes in the way that marginalized populations and food providers interact.

Aboriginal Youth Ambassador - 2010 Curriculum Formalization Project

Aboriginal youth ages 17 to 30 will have the opportunity to receive industry-recognized training, exposure to the post-secondary education environment, and meaningful work experience at high-traffic tourism venues. This proven model is designed to create opportunities for high-risk Aboriginal youth, who primarily live on reservations and face poverty and low literacy. It strengthens cultural connections by working with elders and indigenous cultural experts from the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations and assists in developing successful work and education patterns. This highly successful model, designed to create opportunities for high risk aboriginal youth, who primarily live on reservations and face multiple barriers (e.g. poverty, low literacy levels), strengthens cultural connections by working with elders and other indigenous cultural experts from a range of Squamish and Lil'wat Nation aboriginal communities and assists in developing successful work and education patterns. Funding provided by the Vancouver Foundation for this project will enable the formalization of the program and provide for 3.0 credit. This credit will create a bridge to further education and increase opportunities for participants.

Arts Health Project: Healthy Aging Through The Arts

The project seeks to improve the health and well-being of vulnerable and marginalized seniors through regularly scheduled arts programming that promotes inclusion, community cohesion and connectedness within and across culturally and socially diverse communities. The seniors work with a professional artist, explore and build skill in a creative medium, e.g. dance, theatre or painting. Through their collaborative creative work the seniors share life stories, develop understandings and build trust. Twice each year the seniors present a public performance or exhibition of their art. This provides the opportunity for the broader community to understand and appreciate this work and Seniors feel that they are contributing to their culture. The Community of Practice workshops and meetings are designed to help the artists and project staff share information and develop their ability to deliver this collaborative arts programming. It is a goal of the project to demonstrate how collaborative art is a key contributor to health for the individual senior as well as the community at large.

Improving socio-economic outcomes for adults living with mental illness

This project will bring together the Food Bank and Arrowhead Club House to test a volunteer and employment training initiative for adults living with mental illness. A key component will be the implementation of organizational change in the structure of the Food Bank to incorporate a capacity building training component for ADLMI that could lead to employment in the community and will incorporate long term sustainable employment in the food bank for adults living with mental illness. The results of this pilot will provide ongoing support to potential employers building our communities capacity to support this population and shift the communities perception of the abilities and positive contributions ADLMI can make to the health and well being of the community. Participants will have an increased sense of self worth, increased income, references for other employment and will have the skills and support to seek employment. Local employers, support services and adults living with mental illness will be engaged in workshops and dialogues to discuss the barriers and benefits of employing this population. These activities will shift their perception of ADLMI and increase their ability to support this population. In addition the new volunteers and employees will increase the Food Banks capacity to serve the community and to better serve users of the Food Bank who have Mental illness.
