Standard Size

Since 1965, Vancouver's architectural direction could be defined as one 'without architects'. First, through the proliferation of the mass-produced, builder-designed 'Vancouver Special' houses in the 60s to 80s, then through the master-planned and developer-led creation of over one hundred podium-style condominium towers in Downtown Vancouver. Widely labelled 'Vancouverism' and lauded as a model for global urbanism, Vancouver is often referred to as one of the most livable cities and simultaneously one of the most unaffordable - a contradiction emerges. Ken Lum's "Standard Size" is comprised of a replica Vancouver Special scaled down in size based on the difference in property value from 1986 to present. The project reveals an ideology of globalization, where development is accepted as infinitely repeatable in any context or culture and notions of 'livability' are flattened into a global metric, in what Urbanist Andy Yan calls an 'insecurity of belonging'. Standard Size holds up a mirror to Vancouver's spatial commodification and simultaneously to a global reality.

Program Activities textual vishyuns: image and text in the work of bill bissett

The Reach will present the exhibition: textual vishyuns: image and text in the work of bill bissett and develop related interpretive programming. This exhibition is based on the recently published book textual vishyuns: image and text in the work of bill bissett and survey his art practice from assemblages and constructions, paintings, drawings, to hand-made books and archival papers, including letters and "small press" ephemera. Since this will be the second major exhibition and the first exhaustive survey of bisset's work, The Reach plans to develop a series of public activities including lectures, seminars and interactive workshops around his poetry, films and the exhibition. The engaging programs will be co-created with Carl Peters of Contemporary Literature & Visual Arts at the University of The Fraser Valley. UFV students and visitors will have an opportunity to examine and engage in a distinctive body of visual art, text and film and to explore a wide range of aesthetics issues and concerns. Our staff educator will utilize the information for student/visitor tours.

a heart that has no love/pain/generosity is not a heart

The Reach will be displaying the exhibition, 'a heart that has no love/pain/generosity is not a heart', a multifaceted installation comprised of archival photographs, documents, miniature paintings and videos which examines the aftermath of the destruction of the colossal 5th century Buddhas of the Bamiyan Valley in Central Afghanistan in 2001. This exhibition was co-created by Vancouver-based artist Jayce Salloum and Afghan artist Khadim Ali and is an important cross-cultural dialogue between a Canadian artist and an ethnic Afghan-Hazara artist. During the installation of the exhibition Bachelor of Fine Arts Students from the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) will be invited to observe and report the exhibiting artsits' archival/art practice. This process will be documented and used as part of an interpretive tour to help gallery visitors explore the ideas and concepts contained within the exhibition installation.

For four nights, Aeriosa will stage free-admission performances at Granville and Davie of a site-specific dance entitled Being. Act 1 of the show will begin outdoors on Faris Theatre’s roof and north wall, while Act 2 will unfold inside.

KHAOS is a re-imagining of the Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone set in a contemporary world of climate change and looming global catastrophe. KHAOS asks the question, ‘What if Persephone were prevented from returning from the underworld to console her mother? Would Demeter’s continuing grief and despair end life on Earth as we know it?’ This is a request for funding of the premiere production and touring.

Keep and support emerging artists in our regional community

Exhibition of artwork completed after primary training is of utmost importance for an artist’s career advancement. A systemic problem for recent BFA graduates is finding a community outside of school that supports their artistic practice including the tools, space and funding to make art at the same caliber as in school and to continue to get fresh influence and critical feedback on their work from senior artists from elsewhere in order to grow their ideas and expertise. To prevent emerging artists from moving away from our remote region, we are proposing to pair a senior BC artist with similar art concerns with a local emerging artist to create artwork to be exhibited in Arnica's gallery.

Arena

'Arena' is an innovative project that will draw together artists in dialogue and collaboration as they explore two homegrown Kamloops sports phenomena: ice fishing and skater culture. The project will encompass two exhibitions by artists working with site specific installation and photography. The project will engage local artists through mentoring opportunities, artist talks and workshops. A catalogue documenting the project will be published. The 'Arena' project covers two distinct exhibitions, linked under one overarching project that explores the intersections between sport, youth culture, and contemporary art. "Hard Water" will illuminate the culture of ice fishing through the highly evocative photographs of emerging Kamloops artist Devon Lindsay and the chilling ice cave installation of Josh Cleminson and Monte Burman. Steve deBruyn's installation, "Skater!" will explore the aesthetic and functional qualities of DIY built objects associated with skater culture through a fusion of functional skate-park architecture with formal sculptural and painted explorations.

Art Starts in Schools Society

Art is essential - not extra

There is tremendous opportunity for artists and teachers to collaborate as partners in education and explore arts integration in classrooms. Our project seeks to increase the employability of artists in schools. Infusion offers training for artists to develop a complementary teaching practice, woven into their robust artistry. Teaching artists have greater opportunities to work in schools as they can speak the language of education. Infusion provides educators with professional development to expand their understanding of art in education. Our project seeks to change: - Basic routines: Artists interested in working in schools need support as navigating school culture can be intimidating and even prohibitive. Teachers teach the way they teach and need a compelling reason to explore new approaches like arts integration. - Resources: The role of artists in schools needs to be expanded in order to re-establish the flow of resources. - Beliefs: Young people are taught that art is separate from the rigor of ‘academic’ subjects. Since 2012, we have supported 97 artists to become teaching artists. This grant will help us launch the next phase, which is to deploy resources to the following: mentorship, marketing systems, advocacy and evaluation. This next phase will help us examine whether the role of art is actually expanding in the education system, and inevitably our community, and if the perception of how young people are taught to perceive art is actually changing.

An Arts Hub for South Surrey: Engaging Community Through the Arts

The Media Room is a recently refurbished, fully accessible,1800 square foot space located in a heritage building at Camp Alexandra. Our vision is to re-purpose this space by providing equipment and resources to transform it into a venue for arts collaboration, creation, and presentation. This would include audio/visual equipment, display stands, drop sheets, drawing tables, and easels; as well as providing supplies in our crafts room for use by children and youth. Working with the artists and networks with whom we have established relationships, we will populate this space with artists committed to collaborating on projects aimed at social transformation. In keeping with our commitment to hearing the voices of those affected by oppression and marginalization; initially, there will be a specific focus on attracting artists who identify as newcomer Canadians and LGTBQ elders and youth - populations who have self- identified as needing support in our growing and changing community. The collaborative projects created through this facilitation would be presented under the auspices of Alex House. Our intention would be to work with the artists to organize and promote public events, connecting them to a larger engagement strategy. Rather than be an end-in-itself, Alex House would subsequently follow-up by supporting participant-led programs and activities aimed at creating change around the issue highlighted by the performance or installation.

The Lake / n’-ha-a-itk

The Lake / n’-ha-a-itk is a musical documentary about, and that re-interprets as a film (the only Canadian opera on film), a historic BC opera integrated with contemporary syilx / Okanagan culture in an extraordinary cross-cultural collaboration. It addresses under-representation of Indigenous peoples; raises awareness of Canadian women composers; and removes barriers of access, changing an established social system which allows only certain segments to experience opera. Widely accessible through low ticket prices, community venues and, eventually, online, it liberates an entrenched art form, opening its doors to all.

It examines Marilyn Monroe’s intellectual and emotional relationship to death and love. As the work progresses, the performance interweaves what is taking place on stage with the trajectory of Monroe’s life through relationships, fame and myth.

Axis Theatre Company

RIP! a collaborative creation with KC Brown

RIP! is a new play for adult/family audiences, inspired by the story of Rip van Winkle, an unlikely protagonist to any modern tale. Developed through two exploration workshops, that collaborative effort resulted in a rehearsal script penned by KC Brown. The projects groundwork was laid over several years and the Vancouver Foundations' initial support was critical to our completing the workshop phase in 2012/13. The rehearsal script is based on the material developed with four actors, two directors and the playwright, a unique process that Artistic Director Wayne Specht implements in some form to each new creation. This process has resulted in over 57 productions. In January 2014 the directors will use the script to complete the scene breakdown and map out the staging. Advance preparation is a key goal to this collaborative creation process which involves everyone with artistic input, from the actors to the designers. This world premiere production of RIP! is scheduled to run for three weeks at the Waterfront Theatre, performing 23 shows including three student matinees.

R.I.P.

Our project idea originated from an outline submitted to Wayne Specht by K.C Brown. Intrigued by the idea, the next step was to choose and bring a group of talented artists together with the intention of creating an exciting new physical theatre play for adult audiences, loosely based on the story of Rip van Winkle. This method is proven within Axis' history in creating theatre. The current theme is: a person (or persons) waking up in a much later time period from when they first went to sleep. Our development structure will include: • A two day writing phase to flesh out the theme (pre- application) • Two one-week workshops that will develop the subject matter and the script through a non-premise improvisational method. This delivers the opportunity to explore the theme and ideas off the page. • A storyboard and script that will lead to rehearsal and production of the new play. We are planning to premiere R.I.P in our 2013-14 season and serve the adult/family population in Vancouver and BC. If suitable, the play will be adapted into a play for young audiences.

Vancouver Now: Emerging Artists' Portfolio Series

The project will provide a forum to articulate the idea of "Vancouver Now" from the perspective of emerging and culturally diverse artists and curators. Through Decoy Magazine's website, we will publish a series of emerging visual artists' portfolios investigating specific topics in Vancouver's current socio-economic and cultural situation in relation to the city's history and projected future. Concretely, we will commission 3 Vancouver-based emerging curators to develop the content of a portfolio series, each showcasing the work of 3 emerging Vancouver-based artists. Organized as 3 thematic portfolios series, the final outcome of this project will consist of the online exhibition of the work of 9 emerging artists and publication of 3 critical texts produced by the participating curators. Exhibiting this project through a flexible online platform will enable us to present artworks produced in multiple formats and medias, while not being limited by the durational and spatial constraints associated with traditional exhibition venues.

Ballet BC

RITE

Ballet BC is seeking support for the commissioning, development and creation of a full-length program of contemporary ballet inspired by The Rite of Spring. The ground-breaking 1913 collaboration between choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky and composer Igor Stravinsky had monumental impact on 20th century music and dance for its bold rhythmic, tonal and choreographic language that is still considered revolutionary more than 100 years after its premiere. Drawing on the spirit of innovation and risk-taking that is the legacy of The Rite of Spring, RITE, will include two innovative World Premieres to be performed in our 2014-15 Season in May 2015. The first part of the program will highlight an interdisciplinary collaboration between Ballet BC Artistic Director and choreographer Emily Molnar with Vancouver-based designer, Omer Arbel and composer Jeremy Schmidt. Part two of the program will be a newly-conceptualized, full company contemporary ballet choreographed by Spanish choreographer Gustavo Ramirez Sansano, using Stravinsky's original musical score.

Ballet Victoria Society

Ballet Victoria's Dracula

To open Ballet Victoria's 12th season, the company will create a new full-length narrative ballet based on Bram Stoker's classic gothic novel, Dracula. Ballet Victoria will create a unique score comprised of: modern music mixed by Jason King with special effects, a pair of commissioned sections (a tango by Ruy Boff and a classical section by Robert McBride) as well as a selection of works by Gustav Mahler, Arvo Part, and Knut Nystedt. The present-day setting and plot of this production will make it unique and more widely appealing. The demanding choreography will be rooted in classical ballet vocabulary (pointe work) with a strong emphasis on contemporary movement quality. As with the recent successful production of Frankenstein, Paul Destrooper's Dracula will incorporate humour and popular culture references in his effort to recount the story of the infamous vampire as he attempts to fit in new surroundings. Ballet Victoria strives to bring the highest technical and artistic quality to all its creations, as well as appeal to as wide audience and introduce many to the art form.

The Secret Garden & Other Works

Ballet Victoria's The Secret Garden & Other Works is a two-act program that features a mixed repertoire of classical and contemporary works including: Le Jazz Hot, by BC resident Jacques Lemay (premiered by principal dancers Evelyn Hart and John Kaminski at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet); Bruce Monk's Noctiluxe (music by Debussy) and a new work by BC resident and RWB alumni Gisele Plourde (music by Petr Eben on four-hands piano, The Little Green Forest). Vancouver-based concert pianist Sarah Hagen will accompany the dancers along with a cellist and violinist for The Secret Garden (Haydn), a narrative ballet inspired by Michael Shamata's adaptation of Burnett's novel (1911). This original creation by Paul Destrooper showcases the technical and dramatic skills of the dancers as they guide audiences through this deeply emotional story about the paralyzing effects of loss on one's social and physical environment and the innate wisdom in children's imaginations. The ballet is set in Victoria and reflects elements of the city's architectural and natural landscape.

Bard on the Beach - Community Diversity

Our proposed project is an overall Community Diversity Strategy that is aligned with three categories: 1. Training/Employment: We will expand our Artistic Associates by adding two new positions to include more gender and culturally diverse voices. Bard’s Associates are involved in aspects of artistic planning including programming, casting and development activities. These new Associates will identify new projects, build new relationships, and work on increasing diversity in our audience. In addition, we will hire cultural consultants for specific productions to protect cultural sensitivities. We will increase the Bard Studio workshops and train more diverse performers, increasing the number of qualified artists to be employed on our stage and across Canada. Bard’s artistic team will travel throughout Canada to identify and collaborate with more diverse artists. 2. Education: We will add additional Bard in the Classroom and Neighbourhood workshops (provided for free); develop a Distance Education Streaming Education component; and train more Teaching Artists to establish a more diverse roster of teachers for all our programs. We will host and engage in community wide forums to discuss diversity issues, share our findings and encourage others to be more inclusive of many perspectives and voices. 3. Development of New Work: We will develop diverse plays from different cultures through the Bard Lab Program and focus on engaging more gender diverse playwrights and creators.

Enhanced Training and Coaching Initiative

We hope to create the Bard Artist Training Department, expand on our existing training offerings and build a strategic three year plan to make a significant contribution to artist training in Vancouver. We will create a Head of Training and Coaching position who along with the Artistic Associates will identify what training will be most beneficial, source and consult with appropriate coaches, and create a curriculum that addresses the ongoing needs of the company and community. Over the course of three years, we will expand and enhance existing training opportunities by adding time and additional instructors and experts; we will increase the honorarium for participants making training more accessible and we will offer more coaching resources throughout the performance season, ensuring the health and safety of our company. We also plan on developing a workshop program for the community year-round, welcoming local and international master instructors, and will offer professional development opportunities to our artistic staff to benefit both the Bard Company and greater arts community.

Production of Elizabeth Rex by Timothy Findley

The staff and Board of Directors of Bard are currently in the midst of a strategic review of the Festival's mission, vision and values. Part of the strategic review is examining Festival programming possibilities beyond the Shakespeare canon. In 2012 Bard commissioned an Angus Reid survey that concluded 7 of 10 patrons would support Bard expanding its repertoire to include works by his contemporaries or a Bard related '˜twist'. Elizabeth Rex, received its premiere production at Stratford, Ontario in 2000. The play brings together Queen Elizabeth I, William Shakespeare and his acting troupe on the eve of the execution of Robert Deveraux Earl of Essex, the rumoured lover of Queen Elizabeth. The universal themes explored by Canadian playwright, Timothy Findley, will appeal to traditional Shakespeare audiences as well as those who may not otherwise be attracted to a Shakespeare play. Elizabeth Rex will be rehearsed in repertory with Measure for Measure for 7 weeks in May/June, 2013 and be presented at Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival in July thru early September.

New Play Adaptation & Production of HENRY VI, THE WARS OF THE ROSES

Henry VI, The Wars of the Roses will be the premiere production of this newly adapted work to be presented at Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival in 2011. An original work that distils the texts of three plays into one, it will be rehearsed by the Bard Studio Stage company over a 6 week period along with Richard III and then play for 38 performances alongside Richard III in 2011.

Flee

This project is to create, develop and present Flee, a new work by three of Vancouver's most dynamic and innovative artists -- composer, cellist and improviser Peggy Lee, playwright-director David Hudgins and lighting designer Itai Erdal. Flee will be a darkly humorous and Kafkaesque tale in which the dialogue between music, visual storytelling, movement and theatre reveals the unseen and unknowable forces that liberate and bind us. Inspired by the once-popular phenomenon of the flea circus, Flee examines the interplay between composition and improvisation, bringing the audience closer to the life and nature of musicians and in particular, improvisers -- a nature that is vulnerable, rebellious, risky and curious. Flee will be a hybrid of live performance, an integrated narrative in and around the "action" of the acoustic concert. A piece that zooms in on life as we deny it, Flee scratches below the surface and probes the underbelly for what little we know about the cruelty and compassion of creatures caught in extreme times. Flee will be presented at the Roundhouse, June 14-20, 2013.

Interactive Presentation Terminals

We plan to incorporate six interactive presentation terminals into our displays to explain and demonstrate the purpose of the heritage artifacts. "Show and Tell" is an effective manner to pass on historic knowledge. By incorporating advances in technology, we can provide a unique experience for our visitors and further our educational goals. We propose to construct kiosks with interactive terminals and place them about the museum. Each unit would consist of a tablet connected to a television with a supporting structure. We create {or have created} and present program content. Program content at each station would consist of information regarding the artifacts the visitors are viewing. This information could include actual stories or demonstrations of real pioneers using the artifact in their every day life. We also plan to allow our program content to be accessible across technological boundaries as well as cross language and cultural boundaries.

BC Living Arts

Acis and Galatea: A Gender Liberation Opera

This project will present a re-conceptualized performance of G. F. Handel’s 18th c. opera, Acis & Galatea at The Orpheum Annex, Sept. 15-17, 2017. In this re-telling, both lead characters will be portrayed by and depicted as women. The story follows their romantic relationship and the persecution they and their LGBTQ community face as a result of their sexual orientations. This project will generate a social dialogue about the struggles and underrepresentation of the LGBTQ community as it has existed throughout the centuries and it will serve as a platform for producers and artistic directors from four unique Vancouver cultural institutions (re:Naissance Opera, BC Living Arts, Early Music Vancouver, Cor Flammae) to collaboratively address these issues in their respective creative programming. With this project, we will promote systemic change by: -Testing a collaborative production model and developing a prototype for future artistic collaborations amongst Vancouver and BC cultural institutions. -Demonstrating how artistic productions and programming - in this case - opera, can be adapted and presented in a way that promotes positive representations of the LGBTQ community and other underrepresented people in the classical music world. -Using the outcomes of this collaborative production to encourage other Vancouver cultural institutions to consider how their artistic programming might better address and elevate the role of the LGBTQ community in our cultural history.

Gestural Loop

'Gestural Loop' uses gaming technologies and mobile devices that capture physical movement to transform the human body into a musical instrument. The project includes concert performances of new professional works and allows for attendees to create their own artistic experiences through direct interaction with the technology. Through this UBC platform, projected media will also be manipulated and incorporate three additional collaborative works with visual artists from the BC Interior that further explore the theme of 'metaphoric gesture' (as it relates to culture, heritage, communication, language, action, metaphor, interaction with space and time, dance and music).
