Standard Size

Since 1965, Vancouver's architectural direction could be defined as one 'without architects'. First, through the proliferation of the mass-produced, builder-designed 'Vancouver Special' houses in the 60s to 80s, then through the master-planned and developer-led creation of over one hundred podium-style condominium towers in Downtown Vancouver. Widely labelled 'Vancouverism' and lauded as a model for global urbanism, Vancouver is often referred to as one of the most livable cities and simultaneously one of the most unaffordable - a contradiction emerges. Ken Lum's "Standard Size" is comprised of a replica Vancouver Special scaled down in size based on the difference in property value from 1986 to present. The project reveals an ideology of globalization, where development is accepted as infinitely repeatable in any context or culture and notions of 'livability' are flattened into a global metric, in what Urbanist Andy Yan calls an 'insecurity of belonging'. Standard Size holds up a mirror to Vancouver's spatial commodification and simultaneously to a global reality.

Aeriosa has been invited to create a site-specific show for the Scotiabank Dance Centre’s 10th anniversary. For four nights, Aeriosa will stage free-admission performances at Granville and Davie of a site-specific dance entitled Being. Act 1 of the show will begin outdoors on Faris Theatre’s roof and north wall, while Act 2 will unfold inside.

Keep and support emerging artists in our regional community

Exhibition of artwork completed after primary training is of utmost importance for an artist’s career advancement. A systemic problem for recent BFA graduates is finding a community outside of school that supports their artistic practice including the tools, space and funding to make art at the same caliber as in school and to continue to get fresh influence and critical feedback on their work from senior artists from elsewhere in order to grow their ideas and expertise. To prevent emerging artists from moving away from our remote region, we are proposing to pair a senior BC artist with similar art concerns with a local emerging artist to create artwork to be exhibited in Arnica's gallery.

An Arts Hub for South Surrey: Engaging Community Through the Arts

The Media Room is a recently refurbished, fully accessible,1800 square foot space located in a heritage building at Camp Alexandra. Our vision is to re-purpose this space by providing equipment and resources to transform it into a venue for arts collaboration, creation, and presentation. This would include audio/visual equipment, display stands, drop sheets, drawing tables, and easels; as well as providing supplies in our crafts room for use by children and youth. Working with the artists and networks with whom we have established relationships, we will populate this space with artists committed to collaborating on projects aimed at social transformation. In keeping with our commitment to hearing the voices of those affected by oppression and marginalization; initially, there will be a specific focus on attracting artists who identify as newcomer Canadians and LGTBQ elders and youth - populations who have self- identified as needing support in our growing and changing community. The collaborative projects created through this facilitation would be presented under the auspices of Alex House. Our intention would be to work with the artists to organize and promote public events, connecting them to a larger engagement strategy. Rather than be an end-in-itself, Alex House would subsequently follow-up by supporting participant-led programs and activities aimed at creating change around the issue highlighted by the performance or installation.

Ballet Victoria Society

Ballet Victoria's Dracula

To open Ballet Victoria's 12th season, the company will create a new full-length narrative ballet based on Bram Stoker's classic gothic novel, Dracula. Ballet Victoria will create a unique score comprised of: modern music mixed by Jason King with special effects, a pair of commissioned sections (a tango by Ruy Boff and a classical section by Robert McBride) as well as a selection of works by Gustav Mahler, Arvo Part, and Knut Nystedt. The present-day setting and plot of this production will make it unique and more widely appealing. The demanding choreography will be rooted in classical ballet vocabulary (pointe work) with a strong emphasis on contemporary movement quality. As with the recent successful production of Frankenstein, Paul Destrooper's Dracula will incorporate humour and popular culture references in his effort to recount the story of the infamous vampire as he attempts to fit in new surroundings. Ballet Victoria strives to bring the highest technical and artistic quality to all its creations, as well as appeal to as wide audience and introduce many to the art form.

The Secret Garden & Other Works

Ballet Victoria's The Secret Garden & Other Works is a two-act program that features a mixed repertoire of classical and contemporary works including: Le Jazz Hot, by BC resident Jacques Lemay (premiered by principal dancers Evelyn Hart and John Kaminski at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet); Bruce Monk's Noctiluxe (music by Debussy) and a new work by BC resident and RWB alumni Gisele Plourde (music by Petr Eben on four-hands piano, The Little Green Forest). Vancouver-based concert pianist Sarah Hagen will accompany the dancers along with a cellist and violinist for The Secret Garden (Haydn), a narrative ballet inspired by Michael Shamata's adaptation of Burnett's novel (1911). This original creation by Paul Destrooper showcases the technical and dramatic skills of the dancers as they guide audiences through this deeply emotional story about the paralyzing effects of loss on one's social and physical environment and the innate wisdom in children's imaginations. The ballet is set in Victoria and reflects elements of the city's architectural and natural landscape.

Bard on the Beach Theatre Society

Production of Elizabeth Rex by Timothy Findley

The staff and Board of Directors of Bard are currently in the midst of a strategic review of the Festival's mission, vision and values. Part of the strategic review is examining Festival programming possibilities beyond the Shakespeare canon. In 2012 Bard commissioned an Angus Reid survey that concluded 7 of 10 patrons would support Bard expanding its repertoire to include works by his contemporaries or a Bard related '˜twist'. Elizabeth Rex, received its premiere production at Stratford, Ontario in 2000. The play brings together Queen Elizabeth I, William Shakespeare and his acting troupe on the eve of the execution of Robert Deveraux Earl of Essex, the rumoured lover of Queen Elizabeth. The universal themes explored by Canadian playwright, Timothy Findley, will appeal to traditional Shakespeare audiences as well as those who may not otherwise be attracted to a Shakespeare play. Elizabeth Rex will be rehearsed in repertory with Measure for Measure for 7 weeks in May/June, 2013 and be presented at Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival in July thru early September.

Flee

This project is to create, develop and present Flee, a new work by three of Vancouver's most dynamic and innovative artists -- composer, cellist and improviser Peggy Lee, playwright-director David Hudgins and lighting designer Itai Erdal. Flee will be a darkly humorous and Kafkaesque tale in which the dialogue between music, visual storytelling, movement and theatre reveals the unseen and unknowable forces that liberate and bind us. Inspired by the once-popular phenomenon of the flea circus, Flee examines the interplay between composition and improvisation, bringing the audience closer to the life and nature of musicians and in particular, improvisers -- a nature that is vulnerable, rebellious, risky and curious. Flee will be a hybrid of live performance, an integrated narrative in and around the "action" of the acoustic concert. A piece that zooms in on life as we deny it, Flee scratches below the surface and probes the underbelly for what little we know about the cruelty and compassion of creatures caught in extreme times. Flee will be presented at the Roundhouse, June 14-20, 2013.

Interactive Presentation Terminals

We plan to incorporate six interactive presentation terminals into our displays to explain and demonstrate the purpose of the heritage artifacts. "Show and Tell" is an effective manner to pass on historic knowledge. By incorporating advances in technology, we can provide a unique experience for our visitors and further our educational goals. We propose to construct kiosks with interactive terminals and place them about the museum. Each unit would consist of a tablet connected to a television with a supporting structure. We create {or have created} and present program content. Program content at each station would consist of information regarding the artifacts the visitors are viewing. This information could include actual stories or demonstrations of real pioneers using the artifact in their every day life. We also plan to allow our program content to be accessible across technological boundaries as well as cross language and cultural boundaries.

Gestural Loop

'Gestural Loop' uses gaming technologies and mobile devices that capture physical movement to transform the human body into a musical instrument. The project includes concert performances of new professional works and allows for attendees to create their own artistic experiences through direct interaction with the technology. Through this UBC platform, projected media will also be manipulated and incorporate three additional collaborative works with visual artists from the BC Interior that further explore the theme of 'metaphoric gesture' (as it relates to culture, heritage, communication, language, action, metaphor, interaction with space and time, dance and music). Home is a Beautiful Word

The project for which we are requesting funding is a production of a new play, Home is a Beautiful Word, to be presented on the Belfry Theatre Mainstage in the 2013-14 Season. In 2010, the Belfry Theatre commissioned playwright and journalist, Joel Bernbaum, to create a piece of verbatim theatre that addresses the issue of homelessness in Victoria, an issue that Artistic Director Michael Shamata felt could be addressed in a meaningful and unique way through the forum of theatre. Homelessness is a highly visible and controversial issue in Victoria and communities across the country. Verbatim theatre refers to the process of constructing a play using dialogue drawn from interviews conducted with members of a community. Verbatim theatre facilitates the inclusion of voices not usually heard - in the theatre or elsewhere. It allows us to bring many sides of the homelessness discussion to the stage. This project fits well within the Belfry's mission to produce contemporary theatre that generates ideas and dialogue, and that helps our audience to see the world from different perspectives.

Through this project, we are seeking to change the status quo of the ways in which arts institutions create and deliver programming. We are addressing the colonial history of arts institutions and exploring ways to break down the barriers between institutions and the Indigenous community. We will address this issue by creating a community consultation process that will seek to build strong, long-lasting, and reciprocal relationships with community organizations and members. Our goal is to create a space that builds bridges between people. We want to create a space that is shaped by and for the community to support them in participating in safe and accessible educational opportunities.

Roxy Theatre Electrical Upgrade

The Roxy Theatre is currently in its first phase of renovations wherein BBRT has: constructed a raised stage for performance, installed lighting trusses, painted the lobby and auditorium, and installed flooring in the auditorium, amongst many other aesthetic enhancements. These improvements allowed BBRT to open our season with our first Roxy show "True West" in November; however, all of the productions this season have been required to make significant technical compromises due to the current limitations of the space. For the Roxy Theatre to progress, these limitations need to be addressed - and one of the most important is the upgrade from 200Amp electrical service to 400Amp electrical service. The current electrical service for the building is not sufficient to power a proper lighting and sound setup for live performance. The audiences and artists who have come to the Roxy Theatre thus far have shown great support and understanding for the current 'in-process' status of the renovations - but we need to address these shortcomings as quickly as we can.

Boca del Lupo

Big Bad

The Vancouver International Children's Festival (VICF) is commissioning Boca del Lupo to create Big Bad, a deconstructed fairy tale for children and adults to experience together. Big Bad tackles the sensitive and complex issue of identifying danger in the modern age. Recognizing that the metaphors present in Little Red Riding Hood are very different for a parent than for a child, the performance will utilize technology such as synchronized split audio tracks and split screen video to provide very different experiences for parent and child even as they sit side by side. Working with child psychologist, Elizabeth McLaughlin, there will be sensitive and meaningful treatment of this important subject matter and the dynamic artistic team will bring an immersive world to life. Big Bad will be presented at the Revue Stage on Granville Island. Creation will take place over the course of 18 months. It is the final production phase starting in March 2015 that we are applying for in this application.

Fall Away Home

Our proposal is to mount an original site-specific multidisciplinary performance in the summer of 2013 entitled 'Fall Away Home'. A mash up of live feed video, animation, improvised music and contemporary performance, Fall Away Home will be an extraordinary experience for an intergeneration audience in an unconventional space that will transform our perception of who we are, where we came from and our relationship to the place we call home. Thematically the work draws on the grim realities of human trafficking. Careful to avoid perpetuating dated stereotypes, the work will be a fiction/fairytale drawn from contemporary research and first hand interviews with human trafficking victims. Working with the Vancouver Port Authority, our vision is to perform the piece down at the port or near to it, on the water's edge. The setting will be constructed out of shipping containers stacked three and four stories high alongside cranes and other industrial machinery. This all-ages piece will explore the world of children who are not entirely in control of their own lives and destiny.

Centennial Building in honor of BC Forest Service, Elks Lodge, 4-H & Co-op Movem

Our project is twofold. Since the Museum's relocation to the new Heritage Site at Fructova, larger items located in the Gyro Park display such as the Community logging exhibit and other related artifacts are not being taken care of because of inadequate space and/or poor building design. Although the items are being restored at no charge by our local Woodworker's Guild, once completed we do not have suitable facilities to store or display them. Our proposed project will not only see the development of a dedicated space which will allow us to showcase forestry and logging memorabilia which has been so important to our area, the interior 20' x 40' space will also give us an area where temporary displays and celebrations can take place. BC Forest Service celebrates their 100th Year Anniversary in 2012 as does the Elks Lodge 493 and the Co-operative movement of Canada. Next year is the 100th Anniversary of 4-H in Canada. The Boundary Museum Society would like play a part in their 100 year celebrations by hosting picnics as well as providing this exhibit space in their honor.

Caravan Farm Theatre is seeking support for the commissioning, development, and production of a new play called The Trail’s End, taking place in 1933 small-town BC during the Great Depression. A poor young man and woman fall in love and share dreams of escaping their small-town existence. They begin to commit petty crimes and rise to fame as notorious bank robbers, offering the audience two thematic questions: to what lengths would you go to achieve your dreams? And, in the face of adversity, what is the price of freedom?

Caravan World Rhythms Society

Sufi Voices and Dance, from Azerbaijan to Iran & Canada

Caravan will present a week of activity around the visit of world-famous singers Alim Qasimov and his daughter Ferghana, from Azerbaijan. They perform traditional spiritual music heavily influenced by Sufi traditions. They are part of the Aga Khan Foundation's Cultural Trust, and recognized by UNESCO as a cultural treasure. Their visit will come on the heels of the Museum of Anthropology's exhibit of Middle-eastern art. We will host the Qasimovs during the week of September 24-29, and organize various activities around their visit, including: - Major concert at the Chan Centre on September 28 featuring the Qasimov group and a local Sufi music and dance group, led by Iranian musician Ali Razmi and Sufi dancer Raqib Burke. The concert will include new compositions by the group, and two pieces with the Qasimovs. - Film showing of 'WAJD', about sufi music and dance made by Vancouver-based film-makerof Syrian background: Amar Chebib. www.salamfilms.com plus a post-film talk. - Two Lecture-demos by the performers at the Ismaili Centre in Burnaby, and at the MOA at UBC.

Carousel Theatre for Young People

The Wondrous Tales of Old Japan

In April 2014 Carousel Theatre for Young People (CTYP) will stage The Wondrous Tales of Old Japan by David Furumoto. We are increasingly aware of the diversity of our young audiences, and we feel a responsibility to reflect and honour that diversity. The Wondrous Tales represents our first step in this direction. The script explores the folklore of Japan through Kabuki, shadow puppetry and Japanese taiko drumming. Tales include: Momotaro: The Peach Boy, Urashimatoro: The Enchanted Fisherman, Yuki Onna: The Snow Woman, and Hanasaka Jiji: The Old Man That the Trees Bloom. The project will also provide the opportunity for our company to actively engage the Japanese community in Vancouver, seek out new partnerships, and foster new relationships. In addition, CTYP will offer community workshops in shadow puppetry, drumming and kabuki during the run as a means of educating and engaging our audiences.

Chor Leoni Men's Choir

Passion and Resurrection

The Vancouver premiere of two celebrated contemporary works for mixed choir is a co-production of Chor Leoni Men's Choir and Elektra Women's Choir. American composer David Lang's The Little Match Girl Passion is a 2008 Pulitzer Prize-winning composition and the concert's title work is by Latvia's Eriks Esenvalds. In addition to the public performance on April 12, 2014 at the Chan Centre, the project includes a free 30-minute preview performance on April 2 at St. James Church in the Downtown Eastside. This project was conceived last year by Chor Leoni's new AD, Erick Lichte, and Elektra Women's Choir's AD, Morna Edmundson, as the first collaboration between the two conductors. The Lang work speaks to homelessness and the Esenvalds is a gripping new interpretation of the Passion story. We will not only serve the established choral audience but, with the free preview, people who may never have heard a choral performance. We hope to make a strong connection between the theme of homelessness presented in this music and the realities of life in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

Cineworks Independent Filmmakers' Society

Terra Nullius: Commissioned Film by Banchi Hanuse

The project facilitates the production a short film (under 30 minutes) by emerging First Nations filmmaker Banchi Hanuse (Nuxalk), whose first film, Cry Rock, has been nominated for several awards since its premiere at National Geographic's All Roads Film Festival, including Best Documentary Short at the 2010 American Indian Film Festival. This film explores a local narrative from Hanuse's community in Bella Coola, BC, and centres upon traditional and contemporary notions of land ownership, incorporating animated elements to interweave past and present day narratives. Looking at the idea of Terra Nullius, the term from Roman Law meaning 'no man's land', the film will portray a visually evocative story from Nuxalk tradition that is tethered to present day realities. A full website with film clips will be produced in conjunction. This film would be presented at three local venues (Cineworks Annex, Pacific Cinematheque, and The Cultch), and 5 locations across Canada (Victoria, Winnipeg, Toronto, and St. John's), including the Banff Centre for the Arts, who have partnered on these events.

Nelson Civic Theatre Restoration

We intend to renovate the theatre to better facilitate cinematic and performing arts. We have already installed seats, purchased and installed a new digital projector and surround sound system, constructed temporary acoustic walls and set up a simple online ticketing system. This project will include: -schematic design and design development for the entire project -lobby renovation work and installation of new concession equipment -a new energy efficient mechanical air handling unit -electrical system upgrades for the theatre: replacing the current patchwork of panels,old wiring and obsolete equipment with a new dimmer panel and controls, new aisle lights for patron safety, and a rationalization of all the theatre wiring to allow for central dimming control. -new energy efficient lighting A subsequent project will involve renovation of the theatre into three separate spaces.

WePress

WePress is social enterprise community makerspace that would provide access to equipment and training for DTES residents and organizations for artistic development and capacity building. This innovative space will blend older technology such as the W2 (Woodwards) Reynolds letterpress and an industrial sewing machine with the newer technology of 3D printing. 3D printing can be used to print replacement parts for machines in the makerspace as well as being used to print out type plates for the letterpress that can be used for new printing projects, including many other creative projects with shared technologies. We also have a large historic collection of both English & Chinese typefaces that were saved from the Woodwards shop and the Ho Sung Hing Print Shop. A group of stakeholders including Community Arts Council of Vancouver (CACV), Ho Sun Hing Project Community, Gallery Gachet, Vancouver Letterpress League and several independent artists have been collaborating to create and develop a safe, accessible, affordable makerspace in the Downtown Eastside. Our goal is to have the space become self-sustainable through grassroots participation and social enterprise. The space will welcome diverse populations, including those marginalized by class, sexuality, gender, race, culture, disability, mental health, and addictions. Our collective experience working with wide demographics of oppressed and marginalized people has given us the skills needed to create this accessible space.

Creation of 'DVOTE: Lust, Madness and Mayhem'

Noam Gagnon's creative impulse is to delve into personal experiences to create transcendent performances. This has drawn him to collaborate with Nova Bhattacharya, a highly regarded Toronto-based dance artist trained in classical Indian dance. It may seem the two artists from different cultural and dance backgrounds have little in common, but their independent work reveals a shared fascination with the autobiographical. 'DVOTE: Lust, Madness and Mayhem' is their shared investigation into themes of devotion, submission, sexuality and spirituality. Playing with the twinned notions of voyeurism and exhibitionism, DVOTE is an intimate journey that blurs the traditional lines of performance and confessional. DVOTE exposes the continuum of submission and control that begins with the socially sanctioned relationship between performer and audience, and ends somewhere between master and slave. Conflating the opposing ideas of public performance and intensely private experiences of sexuality and spirituality, the work hopes to expose personal taboos and challenge current social discourse.
