The Spoken Word Marquee Series

When Shane Koyczan performed at the 2010 Winter Olympic opening ceremonies, it heralded a new era for spoken word poetry. Koyczan honed his poetic craft as a six-time member of the Vancouver Poetry Slam team. His meteoric rise began with the opportunities he found through Vancouver Poetry House. The current need is to raise the profile of talented local spoken word artists and to highlight voices from underrepresented communities. The Spoken Word Marquee Series at VIPF would showcase established and emerging spoken word artists alongside each other. We plan to program 4-6 events as part of this Marquee Series including: a musical-literary collaboration with Shane Koyczan, Dan Mangan, and The Fugitives; a Dub Poetry partnership between the Black Dot Roots & Culture Collective (BeDRoCC) and two-time Juno award-winning poet Lillian Allen; Hip Hop Poetry featuring Beat Nation, Zaccheus Jackson, and CR Avery; and Queer Stories featuring Ivan Coyote and Tara Hardy. These shows celebrate today's premier spoken word poets and bring forward the next generation.

G.F. Handel's "Theodora"

This project consists of three concert performances of Handel's baroque oratorio 'Theodora'. The artistic forces involved include the Pacific Baroque Orchestra (28 players), five vocal soloists and the Vancouver Cantata Singers (36 singers), all led by music director Alexander Weimann. Featuring some of the composer's most glorious music, this tragic work depicts the self-sacrificial love between a Christian virgin and a Roman imperial bodyguard. It serves as a timeless parable of spiritual resistance to tyranny and an indictment of religious persecution, topics that still resonate with audiences today. These performances will employ roughly 50 Vancouver-based professional performers out of a total of 70.

Ancient Cultures / New Sounds - a major concert in MusicFest Vancouver 2013

Ancient Cultures / New Sounds is a major project planned for MusicFest Vancouver 2013 (August 9 - 18). Under the curatorial direction of Persian-trained instrumentalist and vocalist Amir Koushkani, this contemporary music collaboration will see Canadian world music ensemble Safa welcome several performers including Azerbaijani singer Alim Qasimov to create and perform new compositions and improvisations performed on instruments from the Arabian, Iranian, and Turkish traditions. The focal point will be a MusicFest Vancouver BMO Main Stage public concert in the stunning acoustics of the Chan Centre at UBC. It will also include a free educational lecture/demonstration within MusicFest Vancouver's Inside the Music series. As part of MusicFest Vancouver and supported by the Chan Centre, this project will receive extensive media coverage both with the complete festival and in targeted outreach marketing to specific cultural and artistic communities.The venue is beside the Museum of Anthropology, which will be exhibiting contemporary art works from the same region.

Supernatural Noir - a new music theatre piece

Supernatural Noir is a dark, but comic tale, sung from beginning to end. It will be performed in lyric opera style – with a nod to the golden age of old-time radio dramas. The score, composed by Vancouver’s Cameron Wilson, is an original blend of jazz and classical music with a 1940s retro feel. The libretto is by Kico Gonzalez-Risso, a Vancouver writer/director who has written successful projects for MusicFest Vancouver. The project is a collaboration with Fugue Theatre commissioning and raising funds, and MusicFest overseeing the presentation.

VSO's New Chapter: Connecting People, Connecting Cultures

The VSO will create, experiment, produce, and disseminate 10 high-profile cultural events over the next three years chosen for topical and cultural relevancy that challenge the assumption that cultural institutions are discretionary resources for selected members of society. The adaptive power inherent in cultural institutions when they envision themselves as a civic asset will be tested via projects that focus on a broad spectrum of ages, ethnicities, socio-economic backgrounds, employing exceptional artistic talents to demonstrate the potential of social inclusion. We believe this deep and broad initiative to connect people and cultures will transform not only VSO’s current and future practice, but by sharing our findings, will transform the practice of similarly motivated institutions. VSO’s New Chapter focuses on three areas for their collective ability to foster change: 1. First Nations: Creation of a 3-year partnership of reconciliation beginning with First Nations Artist-in-Residence: Marion Newman, and ending with a multi-faceted First Nations-sourced commission to be performed in Vancouver, B.C. and Victoria, B.C. 2. Community Engagement: The “Beat of the Drum” commission will create music for all abilities; integrating deaf and disabled communities with all music lovers and genres collaborating with world-renown deaf percussionist Evelyn Glennie. 3. Gender Balance and Equality: Virtuosic female talent give voice to stories of our past, present, and future.

U.S. West Coast Tour

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra has been invited to undertake a tour of the U.S. West Coast in January/February 2013. The invitation was extended by Columbia Artists Management (CAMI), one of the world's most experienced and prestigious classical music artist management firms. Interest from presenters has been high, and the tour will consist of 8 concerts taking place in Seattle, Las Vegas, Santa Barbara, Northridge and Alisa Viejo (suburbs of Los Angeles), Palm Desert, Scottsdale and Tucson. Our Music Director, Bramwell Tovey, will conduct all concerts and the piano soloist will be world-renowned Vancouverite Jon Kimura Parker. The program will include a new work the VSO has commissioned from Edward Top, our Composer-In-Residence, entitled 'Totem' (a reflection on First Nations themes), the Grieg Piano Concerto and Prokofiev Symphony No. 5. The VSO has a long history of touring and most recently toured Central Canada in 2009 with concerts in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City and Asia - Korea, Macau and China in 2008. It last toured the U.S. West Coast in 1978

Vancouver Symphony Centre and VSO School of Music

The new Vancouver Symphony Centre and VSO School of Music will be a 25,000-square foot cultural space on the first four floors of a new 46-story residential tower. The Centre/School will contain a 120-seat flexible-space recital hall, 18 teaching studios, 10 listening stations, 6 practice rooms, 2 large classrooms and more. The project has the support of the City of Vancouver Planning Department and Cultural Affairs. Constructed by Wall Financial Corporation and designed by Bingham Hill Architects, it is scheduled to open in January 2011.

Inspiration from the Professionals

The Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra 'Inspiration from the Professionals' project is an initiative that will provide 115 young VYSO musicians an opportunity to work closely and intensively with dynamic young professionals from the metro Vancouver community. These young VYSO musicians will be greatly enriched with musical knowledge and inspiration through this mentorship. The mentors engaged for this 2013 project are the talented young men, Anthony Chung, Alex Chung and John Littlejohn, of the local and professional ensemble named, Infinitus Trio. The 'Inspiration from the Professionals' partnership project will comprise of one weekend of collaborative rehearsals, workshops and one final public performance. VYSO Debut and Junior musicians and the Infinitus Trio professionals will share the language of music on the concert stage, at Vancouver's beautiful Kay Meek Centre on Mother's Day, May 12, 2013.

Music for Kings and Queens

Via Choralis will perform Mozart's Coronation Mass and Handel's Coronation Anthems accompanied by a 20-piece orchestra and with 4 student soloists chosen from the Victoria Conservatory and UVic. The performances will take place at St. Elizabeth's Church in Sidney on the Saturday and the Sunday afternoons. The purpose of this project is to continue with Via Choralis' mandate of producing and performing one major work with orchestra each season. These large works from the standard classical repertoire form part of our western cultural heritage, and we are pleased to have the skills and resources to perform such works for the community. The singers and orchestral players, of course, enjoy learning and performing these works, but it is also for the public that we put on these concerts - producing choral masterpieces of this calibre for Victoria audiences.

Youth Engagement in remote BC communities through fiddle music

The VCM’s “Youth engagement in remote BC communities through fiddle music” will provide cultural and artistic offerings, especially for families living in communities affected by wildfires and floods. Providing fun and creative community-based folk music through Old-Time Dance Bands give youth focus and purpose, improving their well-being and self-confidence. It also provides them with a community of like-minded peers to connect with and share their experiences, both good and bad, through learning and performing traditional Canadian folk music. Connecting people in a positive way within these communities is essential given the challenges they face in the aftermath of disasters.

Performance of JS Bach's St. John Passion

It is a major mandate of the Victoria Philharmonic Choir (VPC) to perform choral works to the highest possible standard with choir with the help of professional orchestra and vocal soloists. There is a sophisticated audience for this type of music in Victoria and we are frequently rewarded with sell-out concerts e.g. the Monteverdi Vespers of 1610(June 2013), Bach's B minor Mass(June 2012) and Bach's two-orchestra St. Matthew Passion(2010 and 2011). Continuing this tradition we intend to perform Bach's St. John Passion in the First Metropolitan Church in Victoria. Approximately 100 players and singers will be on stage. The event date of April 4 2015 is extremely appropriate being Holy Saturday the day between Good Friday and Easter Day. The first performance of the Passion was 291 years ago on Good Friday, April 7, 1724 in Leipzig Bach's first Easter there. The St. John setting is the oldest of Bach's Passions, and has been described as more expressive, immediate and unbridled than the St. Matthew. This work will attract lovers of sacred and baroque music.

A workshop on & performance of Monteverdi's "Vespers" in March & June 2013

The idea for doing large scale choral works like Monteverdi's 'Vespers' arose because very few of them are put on in Victoria. It is a major mandate of the Victoria Philharmonic Choir (VPC) to fill that need. We do so for the sophisticated audience for this type of music in Victoria and are rewarded with sell-out concerts. We typically have almost 100 players on stage for such works as the B minor Mass (June 2012) and the two-orchestra St. Matthew Passion of JS Bach in 2010 and 2011. Upcoming is Handel's dramatic Oratorio 'Israel in Egypt' in October 2012. Continuing this tradition we intend to perform the 1610 “Vespers” by Monteverdi. It will be performed on June 15 2013 in St. Andrews Cathedral in Victoria with vocal soloists and a professional union orchestra. This work sums up the best of what music had to offer four hundred years ago. In preparation for the 'Vespers' we plan a choral workshop in March 2013 on the music of Monteverdi. This will rehearse the VPC for the concert, and give invited singers a chance to improve their skills.

Lest We Forget

In the mud and rain of a Great War battlefield, 20-year-old piper James Cleland Richardson rallied his troops to battle. Composer Tobin Stokes will write a dramatic work for the Victoria Symphony that contrasts the vastness of an orchestra with the solitary dedication of a solo bagpipe player, telling the story of a piper whose music inspired the troops, moments before his death. The loss of Richardson - who received the Victoria Cross posthumously - only minutes after the victory, is a poignant reminder of the horrors and losses of the Great War. This story of astounding bravery offers us a glimpse into wartime life and human sacrifice. Commemoration the 100th anniversary of the onset of WW1, this work will be part of a community wide collaboration bringing diverse arts and culture organizations such as the Canadian Scottish Regiment, the Royal Canadian Navy, the Royal BC Museum, the BC Maritime Museum and others. With exhibits, presentation, lectures and art, the Victoria Symphony will be a key community leader in this commemoration project.

Humpback Whale Sculpture

This public art project will be a life-size, copper clad sculpture of the first third of a breaching Humpback Whale, over five meters tall. It will be constructed by Lon Sharp, the local artist who also created the giant ten meter coho salmon sculpture in neighboring Sandspit. It will be constructed using a yellow and red cedar framework, along with polyethylene tubing and will be sheathed in copper. The base will be cast concrete and steel, with stainless steel structural reinforcement and support for the long pectoral fin. This fin will likely be a magnet for climbing children, so structural integrity is as important as artistic excellence and community engagement. The sculpture will be installed in the middle of the Visitor Centre's interpretive garden, which is situated in the village's downtown core, adjacent to the gathering place we call 'Spirit Square'. Queen Charlotte's recently completed one km.long waterfront sea walk starts a few meters north of the sculpture site and continues south through Spirit Square, and then west along the waterfront.


PGE Historical Exhibition

The Pacific Great Eastern Railway is British Columbia's own railway, and is responsible for establishing many British Columbia industries and the communities that grew around them. It is a unique story about how a railway 'from nowhere to nowhere' (North Vancouver to Whytecliff and Squamish to Quesnel) was created in 1912 to 1915, and actually survived and ultimately prospered. This story has never been told in any sort of permanent exhibition. The project proposed here will develop and install such a permanent exhibition in the Mac Norris Station (which was designed by the PGE in 1915 and then built at our West Coast Railway Heritage Park in Squamish). With the centennial of Squamish next year, the timing is ideal to permanently capture this history for all. The project consists of story research and writing, professional design and production, and installation of storyboard and video exhibition. The exhibition will serve the entire Squamish community and will also be seen by the more than 60,000 visitors and school groups who visit the Heritage Park each year from Metro Vancouver.

New work by Wen Wei Dance

In his new full-length dance for seven performers (including Wang), Wen Wei Wang explores the human quest for connection. Wang intends to compose a new work that impacts more personally and emotionally on the observer, one that depends on the direct communication of emotions from the body. It is a return to the body to capture the purity, quality and power of movement. In examining the body’s intrinsic abilities and limits, and the emotions that are hidden within it, the deeply personal is relayed between performer and audience.

Replacing the Pavilion Theatre HVAC System

We plan to replace the heating and cooling system in the Pavilion Theatre. The building was originally renovated in 1982. The system was a series of reconditioned units at that time and has not been replaced since. The Pavilion Theatre building houses our offices, our production shops, the box office and the 150 seat black box theatre. We lease the building from the City of Kamloops for $1 per year but are then responsible for all required upgrades and maintenance. The assessment from our mechanical engineer calls for $125,000 replacement of the system. Over the next few months, we will tender the project. We have $50,000 in hand from the City in the form of a repayable grant. We have applied to the BC Arts Council for funding and are eligible for support from the City and the Thompson Nicola Regional District, so are in the process of applying for Federal Gas Tax Credits. We collect capital improvement fees on all of our tickets but have mounted a low key capital campaign as well. The replacement of the HVAC system must happen to ensure WCT's and the Arts community's sustainability.

Yayoi Theatre Movement Society


Medea is a 90-minute contemporary Noh performance based on Medea, a Greek tragedy by Euripides (431 BC) and Aoi No Uye (Princess Hollyhock) a Noh play by Zenchiku Ujinobu (1414-1499). The company will produce an interpretation of these tragedies using the lead female character, Medea, as the point of artistic departure. The company has invited Paras Terezakis to choreograph, with artistic direction by Yayoi Hirano. Terezakis' distinct style of choreography will compliment the formal and traditionally stylized movements conceived by Hirano through movement and her carved masks. The collaboration will challenge both directors to imagine, experiment and build towards a new form that incorporates the traditions of Noh theatre, mask and puppetry with contemporary dance. Medea will also include a Noh chant chorus of 8 participants and 15 pieces performed by pianist Sara Davis Buechner. She will explore compositions from the 1400-1500s similar to the Shakespearean era. A life-sized puppet will be created by Japanese puppet maker, Sayo Umeda.
