Project Reach Out Expansion

Our core program Project Reach Out multi-service mobile Drop-in Centre and outreach program will expand to the Langley's (Langley city & Township of Langley), providing after-hours support and services to an area with over 12,000 youth ages 12- 18. This will effectively expand out reach from the Tri-Cities and service two regions (five cites) with a combined population of 32,000 youth. With the use of a modified community shuttle bus, and staffed by a team of 4 outreach workers, we will travel areas of the Langley’s meeting youth where they are, building relationships and a consistent presence, effectively filling a gap in after-hours services that include street outreach, crisis/early intervention, brief 1:1 support, drug and sexual health information, basic needs (health kits, cloths, food), linkages to other community services, and a safe place for youth to access. In consultation with the local RCMP, MCFD and other agencies, our collaborative approach will become an essential part of the continuum in the Langley’s, and will compliment existing youth services.

Purple Thistle Centre

The Purple Thistle has been operating for twelve years on the Eastside of Vancouver, running a 2500 sq/ft youth community centre that offers a plethora of free art and culture resources and support for 150-200 regular low-income youth participants. Our mission of youth empowerment and liberation is realized by the centre being run by a youth staff collective of 15-25 individuals who, in collaboration with the Directors, set policy, establish budgets, staff the facility and make all programming decisions. Central to our mandate of youth liberation and empowerment is providing specific leadership training in the context of real world decisions, real budgets and actual programming.

Britannia Community Services Centre Society

Grandview Underage Youth Response

This builds upon the work and findings of the 'Underage Alcohol Response Table' and the 'Youth Matter Planning Table', using a place-based approach, to integrate at-risk youth aged 10 - 15 into school and community centres. The objective is to outreach a group of 40-50 youth that have been congregating at the Britannia site who are currently actively engaged in self harming behaviour, susceptible to exploitation and criminality. The project will provide staff and resources to coordinate and establish relationships with individual youth to address immediate physical and safety needs, (food, appropriate clothing, access to Adolescent Medicine team, shelter) particular at times when other services are not available - evenings and weekends. This team will work with the RICHER, Roving Leaders, school based teams, MCFD contracted services (family counsellors, A&D counsellor, Aboriginal social worker, etc.) to build relationships and advocate from a youth centered approach, involving youth directly in decisions about their health and safety by providing information, engagement, empowerment

Engaging Families, Children, and Youth for Poverty Reduction in BC

The BC Poverty Reduction Coalition aims to create a comprehensive poverty reduction plan with legislated targets and timelines. To do this, a community organizer will engage BC families, children, and youth affected by poverty. The Coalition will also launch a social media campaign, and engage with municipal decision makers about the need for a provincial strategy to reduce poverty. The Coalition will maintain a Secretariat (housed at Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives) that will coordinate its work and support the Poverty Reduction Campaign.

Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy Society

Families as Learning Leaders

Our goal is to increase vulnerable parent’s involvement and participation in their children's early literacy and education. Vulnerable parents’ voices are critical to understanding their needs, strengths, and barriers to engaging in their child’s learning, but are rarely heard in systems. This project will involve parents as both co-creators and recipients of improved approaches to family engagement in children’s learning. We will document and share parents' and practitioners knowledge to inform dialogue and action at the organizational, and network systems change scale, and ultimately reshape how schools, organizations & community networks engage with & involve vulnerable families. The project has originated through our ongoing work with vulnerable families, children, and adult learners, in partnership with existing community networks. We will work with parents and staff at early childhood & elementary schools to design and deliver a new model for engaging vulnerable families in their child’s learning. A social change lab approach will hold the voices of those affected at the centre, as parents, staff & kindergarten teachers will participate as equals in this iterative process to design, test, implement & learn from new family engagement models. The goal is to develop a model that can be embedded in the existing systems, will continue to hear the voices of parents as the model evolves, and be scaled through organizations and community networks that serve vulnerable families.

SUN DRUM: First Nation Youth Media Pilot Project

The Sun Drum project (name developed by Cree Youth) -- Sun connects to original power, drum to the heartbeat -- features video storytelling and was born through conversations with First Nation elders, leaders and youth. Video is highly effective in oral cultures; it brings to the world the strength of culture present in First Nation communities and builds self-esteem. It is also our experience that video can create powerful links between stories of the ancestors through elders in a context that attracts and empowers youth as storytellers. This project will harness the depth of cultures to align with sustainability objectives, cultural preservation, skills building and will point to entrepreneurship and economic development. We will build 4 core capacities: 1/basics of storytelling, story boarding and interviewing and basic video skills 2/ social media to share and send positive messages about First Nations 3/clean energy, jobs and economic opportunities, linked to culture in context of climate change 4/ social entrepreneurship basics: problem, solution = business models

Sensory Motor Integration Program

A new reality is facing CHSC. Today at least 35% of newly identified deaf and hard of hearing children are coming to the Centre with additional learning needs. Our new Sensory Motor Integration Program will begin to address these needs with assessments and support from a trained occupational therapist that delivers ongoing program implementation and provides outcome analysis. We believe this additional early intervention is critical for a child to learn to listen and speak and ultimately be successfully mainstreamed into a school with their hearing peers.

Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House

Family Community Kitchens

Funding will allow for a Family Community Kitchen program where nutritionally vulnerable parents and children will come together for six week sessions. Community kitchen groups will meet twice weekly to prepare dishes in large enough quantities so that participants will be able to take away multiple servings of each dish to be warmed up at later times. The program will provide an opportunity for parents to be actively involved in their child's learning in a stable and fun environment. Staff and regular guest educators will support the experience-based learning of children based on the priorities of positive parenting and nutrition. The program will alleviate hunger, nuture positive child development and provide food and nutrition education. Nutrition is very important for everyone, but it is especially important for children because it is directly linked to all aspects of their growth and development - factors which will have direct ties to their level of health as adults. Child development, hunger alleviation and education about healthy eating are the main benefits of this program.

Play and Learn Academic Intervention Program

Play and Learn is a free, 4-week day-camp for low-income or Aboriginal children ages 6 to 9 years old who are not meeting expectations for their grade level in reading and math. The idea originated from concerns over students arriving to secondary school, unprepared. Research shows a gap in the level of achievement between children from low-income and higher income students; this gap begins in early grades and compounds year after year, attributed to the accessibility of programs to stimulate learning over the summer. Aboriginal students face an additional problem of feeling excluded when their culture is not perceived to be valued in school. This play-based learning intervention program is taught in small groups. Students participate in literacy, numeracy, recreation and Aboriginal Culture activities during the morning and field trips, crafts and physical games in the afternoons. We offer healthy meals because hungry kids cannot learn. The camp is staffed by remedial education teachers. We will expand to offer a year-round Play and Learn after school program in Year two.

Friend 2 Friend Play Centre for Children with Autism

The project will develop and provide new state-of-the-art intervention programs at a new permanent site in Vancouver called The Friend 2 Friend Play Centre. The programs will continue to be offered on a year round basis following the project. The project will provide programs tailored to the unique needs of pre-school aged children ages 3 through 5, as well as highly specialized Friend 2 Friend - Integrated Play Group Programs for children ages 6 through 12. The project will serve approximately 50-75 children with autism or related special needs annually, as well as 150 of their peers and siblings and their parents and caregivers. In particular, the project will develop and offer the following ongoing programs, with each program consisting of 10-20 scheduled sessions: For pre-school aged children and their parents / caregivers: a. Aboriginal Youth Media Arts Training in Hartley Bay

The proposed 2-year project, 'One Foot in the Past, One Foot in the Future: Aboriginal Youth Media Arts Training in Hartley Bay' will be part of the Young Gitga’at Guardian Program, and will harness and build on youth interest in multimedia projects. The project will provide the skills and motivation necessary to inspire intergenerational learning and improve intercommunity relations. Between 2013-2015 we will empower youth with the skills necessary to employ modern storytelling techniques to capture age-old teachings and traditions. Using photography and film to engage Gitga’at youth with elders and knowledgeable community members presents a novel opportunity to bridge various intergenerational approaches to cultural learning. Gitga'at elders are increasingly unable to participate in cultural harvests and other activities within the territory and thus inhibited in their ability to pass on cultural knowledge and traditions. The proposed project will ensure that important Gitga'at teachings are documented for the benefit of present and future generations.

Frontrunner Young Women's Campaign School

To increase the number of women in politics we need to get more women to run. To get more women to run, we need to get them in the habit of campaigning and running for office - or at least thinking about campaigning and running for office when they are young. Frontrunner is a campaign school and support network for young women that will train and support 18-24 year olds to participate in elections at the college and university campus level. The program will bring together seasoned instructors who have previous electoral campaign experience and who have been elected to student government. Participants will leave with the necessary skills and support to confidently enter electoral races. In order to reinforce a culture where it is clear that women should be involved in political office, Frontrunner will also establish a support network for alumni that will encourage young women to engage in political circles and participate in political dialogue through events and hands-on experience.

Training and Support for the HIPPY HUB Model Innovation in British Columbia

The Hub Model Innovation is a reconfiguration of the HIPPY program’s current delivery mechanism, is more cost-effective (than the traditional HIPPY Model), organizationally efficient, and has an increased emphasis on employment training for mothers in the second and third years of the program along with enhanced labour market partnership. The Hub Model consist of two organizational components: a central office and up to ten (10) satellite pods in different communities. Working under the supervision of the Manager of Multicultural Programs, the position of the Local Training Coordinator would be to support the new site at MOSAIC. He/she will: develop and design local specific training modules to meet the needs of the home visitors and parents: support the Coordinator in implementing HIPPY; implement the transition planning process for home visitors - a structured plan to move them into higher education and/or other employment and together with the Local Program Coordinator make recommendations to the Scholarship Fund for Home Visitors about who is ready to enrol in higher education

This program delivers the Nuu-chah-nulth language to children by engaging preschoolers, their parents and elders. It is based on the principle that the best way to acquire a second language is the same way that children acquire a first language: immersion rather than the traditional teaching-learning situation. By involving elders, this program fits well with Aboriginal views of teaching children while building pride in their culture and heritage. They want to build on the success of the program they have on their reserve by creating a second program in Port Alberni.

Creative Play Drop-In - Immigrant Outreach

The James Bay Community Project currently provides Drop-Ins for parents and their young children (0-5 years) at our Family Centre. The free programs provide enjoyable activities while facilitating the development of supportive social networks for both parents and children and promoting participation in community life. They also provide an accessible and non-threatening 'gateway' or entry program for families to access community-based support services and health care, including other programs at JBCP. Increasing numbers of immigrant families in our community require access to these kinds of programs and face unique challenges in attempting to do so. We want to increase accessibility of the programs for immigrant families, and improve our ability to support their learning and integration through collaboration with the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA). ICA will assist JBCP understand immigrants' needs and assist with interpreting, translation of promotional materials, mentoring our staff, etc.).

Langley Neighbourhood Development Project

Over the past year, senior managers of Langley non-profit and Government service providers have worked together to develop an overarching strategic plan for services based on demographic data, community parent surveys and input from youth, early childhood, special needs and middle childhood groups. This strategic plan was developed and reviewed by staff working in the community, and representatives of the faith, Aboriginal and multicultural communities. Our next steps are to engage the broader community (e.g. business and other community groups) as well as parents and youth to complete an asset inventory. We will engage neighbourhood to discuss local and community assets and how to best fill immediate gaps for children, youth and families. We are requesting funding tol support this process and start up of services.

The Burnaby Youth Hub provides educational, health and therapeutic services to vulnerable youth with complex needs who are not connected to the community through school or work. Services include an educational program, a youth clinic, and a youth centre. The Hub also offers counselling services, job readiness and skills training. This project will assist with staffing costs to provide oversight of the network of agencies that work at the Hub and promote the Hub to the community.

Promoting the healthy development of youth through sports involvement

Since 1992, McCreary Centre Society has conducted the Adolescent Health Survey, which provides current and comprehensive data on health of BC youth. The Society believes a study on sports involvement would greatly contribute to the health and well-being of BC youth. They would conduct an in-depth analysis of sports participation using 2008 Adolescent Health Survey data. Then, the Society would use the results to deliver workshops that give youth the opportunity to discuss ways to improve youth health in their communities.

ACTIVATE Vancouver will be led by a team of local youth (ACTIVATORS) who are or will be trained to facilitate an ACTIVATE Vancouver Forum. The 4 day Youth-Led Forum will bring together 8 teams of 4 youth between the ages of 16-22. Youth participating in the Forum will be recruited by MoreSports, and will participate in workshops that provide them with the tools and skills to lead a community project. These workshops include: Goal Setting, Community and Life Mapping, Networking, Sport4Dev, Action Planning, Youth Driven Development and Physical Literacy. After the Forum teams of youth will deliver a 4-6 month program in MoreSports Community Hubs. The project is the youths' opportunity to take the lead and engage other youth in their community and help them make positive change and healthy choices in their lives by: increasing their physical activity, healthy living knowledge, self-esteem and sense of connection to peers and community, and to help them realize their potential and leadership abilities. Connection Through Spirit is a dynamic and interactive series of four youth-led interfaith dialogue forums culminating in a unique, all-inclusive 'un-conference' exploring our connection to Self, Family, Community, and Earth through spirituality. The purpose of this project is to provide youth of diverse cultural and spiritual backgrounds with opportunities to reflect upon and share with others the value of spiritual awareness, practice and tradition in the process of connecting to these four aspects of society. By engaging young people in intercultural and intergenerational dialogue on topics that are important to them, we hope to address the pervasive sense of disconnection and isolation that has become so endemic in modern secular society, build bridges between and within faith communities, and create constructive collaborations.

Science on the Move-Early Years

NS3’s Science on the Move-Early Years programs will be series of science outreach programs specifically for children ages 0-7 delivered through our mobile science van. This outreach will engage children and families via experiments, hands-on activities, and traveling educators. The idea for mobile science outreach originated during NS3’s vision workshop (fall 2011) where local stakeholders and NS3 identified community needs and the action steps to address those needs. NS3 then gathered more than 30 scientists to generate local themes and activities for NS3’s place-based science outreach, and partnered with the City of Nanaimo’s Parks, Recreation and Culture to deliver 36 free science outreach programs this summer (Science in the Park). Science in the Park successfully reached 1,600 kids, many who would not be able to afford similar education. Based on program feedback, NS3 identified a new target audience for fun science-based programs, families with young children. Science on the Move-Early Years will provide hands-on science to 1,500 children in 2013.

NEED2 Suicide Prevention Education and Support

Expanding the Safety Net-the Middle Grades

NEED2 is proposing to investigate and develop an evidence and outcome based school based peer support program for the "middle years" that would empower young people to support each other and contribute positively to society. In our in-school work around suicide, we have been discussing for some time a developmentally appropriate approach for Grades 6-7 that will address the issues that contribute to suicidal thoughts and suicide. This project would support the development of a peer involved approach to enhance the mental, social and emotional well-being of young people. It would address mental wellness, and provide for supports and skills to address issues like suicide, bullying, addictions and mental illness.

Best Moms and Dads Program

Activities are participant generated and a broad range of free literacy tutoring is provided. (Financial literacy, math, reading and cultural activities). The program is innovative, grassroots, and flexible enough to meet clients where they are in their lives. Program structure, outcomes, and goals are different for each participant depending on their need. While the small group size allows us to offer individual education plans in a group setting, the focus for all participants is parenting, budgeting, nutrition, lifestyle choices and literacy. Local groups involved in early education programs realise that those who most need their services are not accessing them. A need for 'pre-programming' targetting young, single mothers (or fathers) of (mainly) aboriginal ancestry was identified. Many participants are the second or third generation of unemployed, marginalized, under‐educated, impoverished people locked into a seemingly unbreakable cycle of poverty.
