3H Craftworks Society

Sewing and Socializing: Skills Development for Sustainability (hereafter SDS)

Driven by market changes, Craftworks has recently evolved from a business model reliant on retail sales to a more sustainable contract services business model. In order for the new model to supplement our program, SDS was developed to address an identified need for broader skills development, increased earnings, and socialization. SDS will expand participants' capacity through skills workshops (e.g. industrial sewing, embroidery, beading) that are tailored to our participants' learning styles and skill level. Acquiring these new skills will allow participants to access additional in-house earnings opportunities, otherwise not afforded to them. SDS will also provide more frequent opportunities for socialization through a regular schedule of monthly workshops that are conducive to peer learning. SDS will increase Craftworks' capacity by improving our knowledge of training facilitation and add competitive skills that will enable us to market ourselves as a full-service provider.

The Face-to-Face Project: Bringing Youth with Disabilities and Employers Together

The Face-to-Face Project was born out of the need to find creative solutions that improve labour market integration for youth with disabilities. These are individuals who have a great deal to offer as employees but too often struggle in marketing their abilities to employers using traditional methods. For The Face-to-Face Project, youth (age 18 to 25) with disabilities will be recruited from employment organizations in BC to participate in a fun and engaging employer networking opportunity. The youth will initially be referred to local employers who will engage them in mock interviews and networking scenarios. In addition to providing the youth with information about their businesses, employers will have the opportunity to speak with them about their career aspirations. The employers will then refer the youth to a second employer, who will meet with the youth in an informational interview. The project will wrap up with a half-day dialogue forum for project participants and an evaluation that captures implementation lessons and effective practices.

Healthy Harvest

Healthy Harvest Market Garden began four years ago with the idea of providing gardening skills and healthy food in a therapeutic environment for people with mental health issues. People were provided with a small honorarium for 10 hours of work per month. Since that time we have been able to get a long term lease on acreage and a greenhouse owned by the Hupacasath First Nations. The local food movement has been growing throughout BC and great opportunities exist in Port Alberni of which this project can take advantage. There is a great demand for local produce from restaurants in the Tofino-Ucluelet area and Port Alberni is the closest farming community. The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District has a 20 year Agricultural Plan to achieve 40% food self-sufficiency. The ARCD recently hired an Agricultural Support Worker. There are two Farmer's Markets in operation in Port Alberni. We have experimented with different crops and methods of sales and are now ready to move into full production with the idea of becoming a self-sustaining social enterprise.

Internet Business Development for Entrepreneurs (IBDE)

IBDE is an online, accredited training program that helps persons with disabilities (PWD) become web designers or establish a business website. Curriculum is accessed from www.ibde.ca, allowing participants to learn comfortably from home. Participants receive one-on-one assistance from qualified, caring personnel who understand the challenges they face. Assistance is offered in our virtual classroom and through instant messaging, email, and telephone. We offer two IBDE programs: (1) IBDE Web Essentials, a six-month introductory web design program, and (2) IBDE Web Advanced, a four-month program offering training in web programming and web marketing. Through this project we plan to provide supports to 17 individuals in total, eleven in IBDE Web Advanced and six in IBDE Web Essentials. This project will increase employment for PWD by equipping them with technical skills and experience that are in high demand by employers and the business community.

Stable Management Vocational Development

CTRA offers several spheres of programming which contain individualized sub-programs (for example: introduction to competition, therapeutic horsemanship). We are hoping to develop and implement a “Stable Management Vocational Training” program under our “education” sphere, creating a vocational development program for persons with disabilities in the areas of equine husbandry, horsemanship, and stable management. This program would run parallel to our already existing therapeutic programs, running for 10 week sessions at a time. Participants will engage in a mixture of theory, applied lessons, and hands-on (supervised) practice – according to their ability and goals. Class would be appropriately limited and grouped to ensure adequate supervision and quality of instruction and will be taught by our CanTRA-certified instructors. As clients progress, we intend to provide opportunities in volunteer roles (as appropriate), in the intention of providing opportunities for applied development & bridging the gap between education and active participation in the local employment economy.

"familyWORKs" is about shifting attitudes. We will work with families to feature/show what is possible in terms of employment.We will work through family barriers. We see a "familyWORKs chapter" in many regions across BC. Our family oriented experience/efforts will enhance our ability to bring a more holistic approach to families in supporting them to develop a vision & action plan when it comes to employment for their loved ones. After engaging with families & supporting the creation of a family governed, family directed "familyWORKs chapter" we will develop and enhance the following: -an established web presence -family driven training with a focus on developing a vision for employment -training on asset based approaches to planning/various planning processes, action plan development, and community driven conversations In the familyWORKs; chapters families will have a voice & vision that can be drawn upon. These chapters will meet each month, share & learn, and develop complimentary individual action plans. We will meet families where they are at and grow from there.

Independent Living Vernon Spec-Team Assessment Society

EmployAbility

IL Vernon is partnered with Neil Squire Society to deliver the EmployAbility Program. This program runs 3.5 days/ week for 12 weeks at a time, 4 times per year. Participants do distance learning on the computer about employment topics, through a virtual classroom (eg. Moodle). In the afternoon, participants have group activities that focus on health and wellness: smart shop tour, agency visits, or discuss topics such as communication skills or managing your disability. Consumers are given the choice about what topics are covered that are relevant to them. There is a significant need for one on one support for consumers and increased focus on self esteem. IL Vernon is requesting funding to increase staff support from 20 hrs/week to 35hrs/week to meet the increased need for individual support. This increased time will provide time for one on one appointments, work through the 13 week "The Gift of Self Esteem" curriculum and develop a personal planning PATH document, which uses graphic facilitation to create a visual plan of employment goals.

The Mentorship Employment Program will provide opportunities for both young adults with developmental disabilities and the local business communities to broaden their expectations of how persons with disabilities can meaningfully contribute in the workplace. The Program will help participants discover and develop their interests and skills in the pursuit of employment opportunities, and will facilitate increased accessibility and inclusion in Sea to Sky communities and labour markets. The Program will provide participants with opportunities to explore 3 employment options through supported unpaid and short term employment experience in order to find the best/most appropriate employment opportunities, where both employee and employer needs are satisfied. SSCS is uniquely positioned to successfully deliver this program using our related experience and existing collaborative networks. We have been helping adults in their career choices since 1990 and have worked effectively with partners in many of our employment and disability focused programs.
