Arion Occupational Development

During our two years serving individuals and their families with Special Needs in the Kelowna community, we have noted a gap in pre-vocational services for young adults. We have had numerous differently-abled individuals come to the farm to volunteer, but often they lack the skills and appropriate behaviours to work independently and follow through on assigned tasks. These are essential skills required for sustainable employment. These young adults need a structured program with individualized behaviour intervention to become successful candidates for work placement in our community. Our project, the Arion Occupational Development project, will focus on helping the young adult and youth living with disabilities who do not have access to funding to gain valuable employability skills, thereby increasing their employment opportunities. Our objective is to teach employability skills, appropriate workplace ethics and accepted employment behaviors to young adults with global developmental delay through work experience on the farm. Our goal is to successfully place each participant in an employment opportunity recognizing their individual needs and challenges.

Canadian Society for Social Development

Internet Business Development for Entrepreneurs (IBDE)

IBDE is an online, accredited training program that helps persons with disabilities (PWD) become web designers or establish a business website. Curriculum is accessed from www.ibde.ca, allowing participants to learn comfortably from home. Participants receive one-on-one assistance from qualified, caring personnel who understand the challenges they face. Assistance is offered in our virtual classroom and through instant messaging, email, and telephone. We offer two IBDE programs: (1) IBDE Web Essentials, a six-month introductory web design program, and (2) IBDE Web Advanced, a four-month program offering training in web programming and web marketing. Through this project we plan to provide supports to 17 individuals in total, eleven in IBDE Web Advanced and six in IBDE Web Essentials. This project will increase employment for PWD by equipping them with technical skills and experience that are in high demand by employers and the business community.

CanAssist, University of Victoria

Addendum to "Apps for Employment" (DSF12-0037)

CanAssist had initially proposed developing apps on the Apple platform in our 2012 request, targeting release on the Apple App Store at the conclusion of the project so that they are available to people with disabilities on a wider scale. This decision was made as support apps for the disability community traditionally have been overwhelmingly written for Apple devices. Through consultation with the Employment Apps Advisory Committee (clients, their job coaches and service providers), we have learned that device use among the target population accessing supported employment services is now more in line with the general population, with Android representing the majority of users. In fact, due to the lower cost of Android-based devices, these devices are now common for individuals with disabilities that may be living on a fixed or lower income. In order to maximize the accessibility of the apps created from this initiative, CanAssist would like to develop them on both Android and Apple platforms (and by extension, easing future versions for Blackberry or Windows Phone devices).

Teen Work and Tech Work

The concept for TeenWork originated during discussions in 2008 among a group of partners, informally called the Greater Victoria Supported Teen Employment Consortium, the members of which provide a wide range of disability support services across Greater Victoria and the surrounding areas. CanAssist acted as the catalyst to bring this group together and continues to play the role of faciliatator and secretariat for all Consortium activities. The TeenWork program is a truly innovative pilot project designed to change the life path of young people with special needs by helping them find and retain part-time employment. A TeenWork staff member works with participating teens and their families, as well as local businesses, to prepare each youth for a part-time job and help them find work. A job coach then works with the teens as each develops new skills and becomes comfortable in his or her position.

We will continue to employ residents of the DTES and provide hands-on skills training in grafting, planting, pruning, maintaining and harvesting fruit trees in an urban environment. This project will directly increase the amount and diversity of local food made available in our community while reducing food miles, increasing urban tree canopy, and diversifying native pollinator food sources.

Hope Action Values Ethics Culinary Training Society

HAVE ITA Accreditation: Professional Cook Level 1 Course

HAVE is expanding our 8 week culinary training program to offer an additional accredited 21 week culinary program for participating students to receive their Professional Cook Level 1 Certification recognized by The Industry Training Authority (ITA). The Professional Cook Level 1 program is the first level towards becoming a Red Seal certified chef and can cost upwards of $3,300.00 per person for a 32 week program at a postsecondary institution. HAVE plans to offer inclusive and accessible ITA accredited training at no cost to our students. This program includes classroom lessons and testing, beyond the regular 8 week program. For our students that wish to further their culinary training we work quite hard to either help them access funding for post secondary school or place them with an employer that offers an in-house apprenticeship program. Both of these options are typically difficult to come by and do not include the ongoing support many of our students need, be it due to recovering from addiction, PTSD, or mental health. Our goal with this program is to create opportunities, foster inclusiveness and acceptance, and bring about change for those who are most in need. What has made itself very clear to us over the years is that when people are given the opportunity to succeed, they do. Individuals that lack basic needs when applying for work such as no fixed address, no phone, and no ID, are often excluded from mainstream society.

This service offers high quality food while training and employing adults with special needs. Participants learn all the elements of how to work and operate a catering business. These include meal preparations, food safety, and customer service. Participants are paid an hourly rate for their service. This is led by Bagel Club Catering trained staff, assisted by outside professionals such as chefs, nutritionists, and business people. Participants are trained and employed with Bagel Club Catering with the goal of part time employment. This project meets the growing need of training and employment opportunities for able special needs adults. Our persons served want to contribute to their community and society. It heightens their self worth and allows them to increase their income and lessen reliance on government funds. In addition, we see that in the past year there is a great need for this business in the community.

Community Living Skills Centre

The Community Living Skills Centre will provide individuals with developmental disabilities specialized employment training, supports, and workshops designed to build confidence, challenge attitudes, and support individuals transitioning into the workforce. The program will consist of a number of workshops and training programs, including facilitation of the Job Readiness program, a Job Club, employment support, and vocational job skills. By building work structure into the program and providing access to volunteers able to accompany individuals in work placements, participants will be assisted through the transition to working life and improve one's quality of life. Participants will: -Learn life and job skills necessary to obtain and retain employment -Build motivation and decision-making skills required to be successful in the workplace -Have the opportunity to recognize and understand the career path that they desire through the development of a customized work plan -Increase belonging and inclusion through the development of pro-social peer and community support

Social Enterprise Development and Support

Our mission is to foster employment for individuals facing major barriers to work, particularly those with mental and physical disabilities. We do this through the social enterprises we support which provide (a) sustained, dignified, and meaningful employment for our participants and (b) a way for consumers to support social values through their purchases. Social enterprises have gained recognition as excellent toold for providing employment to individuals facing barriers to work, including those with disabilities. Through our own social enterprise work since 2006, we too have had success: 30 individuals facing major barriers had employment in 2010, 28 of these faced a disability, 17 of those 28 have been employed for more than one year, and 11 have been employed for more than two years.

A three year project with a long range goal to expand community capacity to successfully engage youth who have developmental disabilities in sustainable, paid employment. It is intended to increase employment opportunities and the overall rate of employment for youth aged 15 – 19 years in the TriCities. This will be accomplished through the provision of supports to bridge Secondary school students aged 15 – 19 years from school work experience placements into paid part or full time employment and by expanding the pool of paid employment opportunities in the TriCities through the active pursuit and education of potential employers.

L.E.A.P. (Lil'wat Empowerment & Accessibility Program) Vocational

We want to create a sustainable vocational program for our Special Needs members. Our nurse coordinator would act as liason/lead for project. Key components would consist of contracting a Special Needs Vocational counselor to perform one-on-one vocational and needs assessments. Vocational counseling would then be provided on an individual basis. We would provide training in such areas as: basic computer literacy, resume building, interview skills, and small business planning. We would hold workshops with external professional facilitators. We would arrange preceptorship/job-shadowing opportunities, as many of these community members have never previously had experience or opportunity for employment. We would host a job fair where local and surrounding area businesses could present employment opportunities. Also, more students will be transitioning to adulthood in the next few years. The 2nd & 3rd years of this project would be expansions and growth of the first year, based on challenges, gaps, successes, and feedback that will likely evolve once the program is rolled out.

COCO's Catering Project

The purpose of COCO's Catering Project is to help fulfill the cafe's mission. Catering will allow us to provide increased employment hours and expand the diversity of work experience for our staff with developmental disabilities. Catering has been identified as critical to helping the cafe achieve financial sustainability. It is anticipated that catering would also bring additional marketing and advertising benefits to the cafe, which would be incredibly beneficial for our small social enterprise. The project involves renovating the kitchen area, to offer more space that is suitably designed and equipped for preparing catering orders. This would greatly benefit our staff with developmental disabilities who can find working in confined spaces difficult and who also frequently suffer with back issues along with other mobility challenges. This renovation would allow us to undertake catering and at the same time better accommodate our staff with developmental disabilities by providing a bigger and more effectively designed workspace.
