Craftworks Society Long Term Sustainability Project

The Craftworks Society Long Term Sustainability Project aims to help make our organization sustainable and ensure growth and success well into the future. We will accomplish this by: - partnering wtih more community organizations and strengthening our relationships with those we currently have to encourage sharing of resources and referrals between us - increasing and building on skills of the participants to foster personal growth, economic independence and possible employment within the community - building the 'brand' of Craftworks so we become better known in the community -- both to reach out to more participants and encourage sales and support for Craftworks - increasing the number of participants by 15% annually to serve a larger population in the community - developing and creating a signature line of products which will allow for a large number of participants to use a variety of skills in creating the products, and will increase store sales

During our two years serving individuals and their families with Special Needs in the Kelowna community, we have noted a gap in pre-vocational services for young adults. We have had numerous differently-abled individuals come to the farm to volunteer, but often they lack the skills and appropriate behaviours to work independently and follow through on assigned tasks. These are essential skills required for sustainable employment. These young adults need a structured program with individualized behaviour intervention to become successful candidates for work placement in our community. Our project, the Arion Occupational Development project, will focus on helping the young adult and youth living with disabilities who do not have access to funding to gain valuable employability skills, thereby increasing their employment opportunities. Our objective is to teach employability skills, appropriate workplace ethics and accepted employment behaviors to young adults with global developmental delay through work experience on the farm. Our goal is to successfully place each participant in an employment opportunity recognizing their individual needs and challenges.

Expanding Employment

The Expanding Employment project provides increased paid work experience and on the job site training to individuals who live with mental illness and substance use issues. Employees will have the opportunity to be trained by a professional chef in a catering business or work alongside an established crew on trail/yard maintenance, snow removal, gutter cleaning and small home repair jobs. These employment opportunities are in response to clients' requests to have "real jobs" and provide supportive work experience to assist in transitioning to community based employment. All prospective employees are matched with a support worker who will provide one on one vocational assistance and all will work on a team with a supportive trainer/leader who is in recovery. CMHA expects that some individuals will graduate to part or full time community based employment and all will benefit from increased independence and financial security which would lead to greater health outcomes.

Internet Business Development for Entrepreneurs (IBDE)

IBDE is an online, accredited training program that helps persons with disabilities (PWD) become web designers or establish a business website. Curriculum is accessed from www.ibde.ca, allowing participants to learn comfortably from home. Participants receive one-on-one assistance from qualified, caring personnel who understand the challenges they face. Assistance is offered in our virtual classroom and through instant messaging, email, and telephone. We offer two IBDE programs: (1) IBDE Web Essentials, a six-month introductory web design program, and (2) IBDE Web Advanced, a four-month program offering training in web programming and web marketing. Through this project we plan to provide supports to 17 individuals in total, eleven in IBDE Web Advanced and six in IBDE Web Essentials. This project will increase employment for PWD by equipping them with technical skills and experience that are in high demand by employers and the business community.

Teen Work and Tech Work

The concept for TeenWork originated during discussions in 2008 among a group of partners, informally called the Greater Victoria Supported Teen Employment Consortium, the members of which provide a wide range of disability support services across Greater Victoria and the surrounding areas. CanAssist acted as the catalyst to bring this group together and continues to play the role of faciliatator and secretariat for all Consortium activities. The TeenWork program is a truly innovative pilot project designed to change the life path of young people with special needs by helping them find and retain part-time employment. A TeenWork staff member works with participating teens and their families, as well as local businesses, to prepare each youth for a part-time job and help them find work. A job coach then works with the teens as each develops new skills and becomes comfortable in his or her position.

Golden Eagles Berries - Work Placement

This is CAN's pilot paid work placement program and part of the Aging with Autism series. Our intention is to support the aging autism demographic through volunteer placement, job readiness coaching and supervised work placement. This initial program will be one week long where participants will be supervised and assessed by a Site Coordinator and 1:1 Workers both in the plant and in the fields. We anticipate the assessments will indicate that 50% of the participants will move on to finding work opportunities outside of CAN. We intend to use this as a model for other programs adjusted according to the community needs and local resources throughout BC.

Tetra Ability Opportunity TAO Project

The Tetra Ability Opportunities (TAO) project is an initiative of the ConnecTra Society, in partnership with the Tetra Society of North America, two charitable organizations that deliver support programs for people with significant physical disabilities. Tetra volunteer Brian Johnson suggested the idea that the new Tetra Workshop, created in partnership with iCord and located in the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre, could be adapted and opportunities explored, so that people with varying levels of disability (up to and including high quadriplegia) can be trained to use the workshop's tools and equipment. Together, Tetra and ConnecTra have developed a project that will assess the viability of training people with disabilities to learn to cut, drill, sand, paint, etc. Participants will learn these skills while working to create items that have been pre-selected as needing a range of tools, skills and levels of physical ability, including jigsaw puzzles, bird feeders, flower pot holders and wooden toys.

We wish to research possible other locations for a beverage kiosk, that would provide a higher traffic volume and also research offering a catering service to various community groups GFN has had a great response from the community for the work we do to provide inclusion and employment for people with developmental disabilities. In order to continue operating the Sunshine Shack we need to develop a business plan with the long term goal of sustainability, while providing employment and training-on-the job for young adults who have recently graduated from high school Our main focus for this project will be a comprehensive review of services including an assessment of current and future needs. We are asking assistance to hire an external evaluation consultant to conduct the review of services, and to assist us in developing a process, criteria and reporting framework to evaluate the expansion options. This will help us to identify core services and help us to make a decision which expansion alternatives will be pursued. We will also update our website to be more current.

The Grendel Group (Family Advocates) is a values-based organization, dedicated to establishing programs that provide educational, work experience and skill development opportunities within the community that contribute to the moral, mental, cultural and physical improvement for individuals with developmental intellectual delays (DID). The Grendel Players is a theatre program that works towards developing the participants' communication skills. This proposed project will have the Grendel participants create, rehearse and perform a play about the value of differences. The participants will also be involved in the building and painting of the set; creating the props; and helping to make costumes. This endeavor will better integrate these individuals into the community and provide them with the necessary communication skills and self-confidence required to obtain employment. It will also provide and opportunity to members of the community to see these individuals in a different light: recognizing their abilities as opposed to their disabilities.

The Bagel Club Catering Social Enterprise project is a catering business that specializes in Vegetarian Mediterranean Cuisine. This service offers high quality food while training and employing adults with special needs. Participants learn all the elements of how to work and operate a catering business. These include meal preparations, food safety, and customer service. Participants are paid an hourly rate for their service. This is led by Bagel Club Catering trained staff, assisted by outside professionals such as chefs, nutritionists, and business people. Participants are trained and employed with Bagel Club Catering with the goal of part time employment. This project meets the growing need of training and employment opportunities for able special needs adults. Our persons served want to contribute to their community and society. It heightens their self worth and allows them to increase their income and lessen reliance on government funds. In addition, we see that in the past year there is a great need for this business in the community.

Our mission is to foster employment for individuals facing major barriers to work, particularly those with mental and physical disabilities. We do this through the social enterprises we support which provide (a) sustained, dignified, and meaningful employment for our participants and (b) a way for consumers to support social values through their purchases. Social enterprises have gained recognition as excellent toold for providing employment to individuals facing barriers to work, including those with disabilities. Through our own social enterprise work since 2006, we too have had success: 30 individuals facing major barriers had employment in 2010, 28 of these faced a disability, 17 of those 28 have been employed for more than one year, and 11 have been employed for more than two years.

Our clients have numerous challenges in their attempts to find employment ranging from the pure physical disabilities that create limitations to psychological issues that create further barriers. In order to assist these individuals in overcoming these barriers there are a number of basic skills in which they require training, which we define as Employability Skills. The program we offer provides ongoing workshops covering a number of topics including Career Exploration and Job Search, Memory and Attention Skills, Basic Internet Skills, Interpersonal Skills, Resume Writing, Job Interview role plays, Job Retention, Personal Presentation (hygiene), Time Management and Conflict Resolution. We have determined that all of these skill sets are extremely important when trying to place our clients into employment and have a direct impact on their ability to not only obtain a job but also to retain their job.

Breaking Barriers in Business Through Inspirational Speaking

In 2010-11, Realwheels founding artistic director and award-winning producer James Sanders successfully inspired audiences of small-business employers to the benefits of hiring people with disabilities. Over the course of 12 months, we will polish the presentation structure and associated materials, solidify partnerships, identify new audiences, and build a marketing plan for the continuation of the project as a social enterprise, thus providing an alternative revenue stream to Realwheels. Combining entertainment and advocacy, our multimedia presentations spark the interests of employers in exploring how their organizations may become more inclusive of people with disabilities. Partnerships with disability resource organizations ensure that employers’ inspiration can be effectively translated into action. Victoria Brain Injury Society

Survivor, Supporter, Success!

At VBIS a Peer Supporter is available Monday-Thursday in our community room. This volunteer, who has experienced a brain injury themselves, is trained to support new members and facilitate group conversations. They pass on useful coping techniques, share their experiences with other survivors of brain injury and their families and refer survivors to useful community resources. We have found peer support to be an extremely useful way to help survivors deal with the devastating repercussions of brain injury. It is critical that we offer Peer Supporters appropriate training and support to maximize their effectiveness and the value they receive from their mentorship role. “Survivor, Supporter, Success!” is a Peer Support training program that educates and trains brain injury survivors on how to mentor and support their peers. This mutually beneficial program will enhance the capacity, skills and self-confidence of our Peer Supporters and can be utilized as a stepping stone to paid employment, while also providing recent survivors with mentors to support them with their recovery.
