Ballet Victoria Society

The Secret Garden & Other Works

Ballet Victoria's The Secret Garden & Other Works is a two-act program that features a mixed repertoire of classical and contemporary works including: Le Jazz Hot, by BC resident Jacques Lemay (premiered by principal dancers Evelyn Hart and John Kaminski at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet); Bruce Monk's Noctiluxe (music by Debussy) and a new work by BC resident and RWB alumni Gisele Plourde (music by Petr Eben on four-hands piano, The Little Green Forest). Vancouver-based concert pianist Sarah Hagen will accompany the dancers along with a cellist and violinist for The Secret Garden (Haydn), a narrative ballet inspired by Michael Shamata's adaptation of Burnett's novel (1911). This original creation by Paul Destrooper showcases the technical and dramatic skills of the dancers as they guide audiences through this deeply emotional story about the paralyzing effects of loss on one's social and physical environment and the innate wisdom in children's imaginations. The ballet is set in Victoria and reflects elements of the city's architectural and natural landscape.

Production of Elizabeth Rex by Timothy Findley

The staff and Board of Directors of Bard are currently in the midst of a strategic review of the Festival's mission, vision and values. Part of the strategic review is examining Festival programming possibilities beyond the Shakespeare canon. In 2012 Bard commissioned an Angus Reid survey that concluded 7 of 10 patrons would support Bard expanding its repertoire to include works by his contemporaries or a Bard related '˜twist'. Elizabeth Rex, received its premiere production at Stratford, Ontario in 2000. The play brings together Queen Elizabeth I, William Shakespeare and his acting troupe on the eve of the execution of Robert Deveraux Earl of Essex, the rumoured lover of Queen Elizabeth. The universal themes explored by Canadian playwright, Timothy Findley, will appeal to traditional Shakespeare audiences as well as those who may not otherwise be attracted to a Shakespeare play. Elizabeth Rex will be rehearsed in repertory with Measure for Measure for 7 weeks in May/June, 2013 and be presented at Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival in July thru early September.

Flee

This project is to create, develop and present Flee, a new work by three of Vancouver's most dynamic and innovative artists -- composer, cellist and improviser Peggy Lee, playwright-director David Hudgins and lighting designer Itai Erdal. Flee will be a darkly humorous and Kafkaesque tale in which the dialogue between music, visual storytelling, movement and theatre reveals the unseen and unknowable forces that liberate and bind us. Inspired by the once-popular phenomenon of the flea circus, Flee examines the interplay between composition and improvisation, bringing the audience closer to the life and nature of musicians and in particular, improvisers -- a nature that is vulnerable, rebellious, risky and curious. Flee will be a hybrid of live performance, an integrated narrative in and around the "action" of the acoustic concert. A piece that zooms in on life as we deny it, Flee scratches below the surface and probes the underbelly for what little we know about the cruelty and compassion of creatures caught in extreme times. Flee will be presented at the Roundhouse, June 14-20, 2013.

Home is a Beautiful Word

The project for which we are requesting funding is a production of a new play, Home is a Beautiful Word, to be presented on the Belfry Theatre Mainstage in the 2013-14 Season. In 2010, the Belfry Theatre commissioned playwright and journalist, Joel Bernbaum, to create a piece of verbatim theatre that addresses the issue of homelessness in Victoria, an issue that Artistic Director Michael Shamata felt could be addressed in a meaningful and unique way through the forum of theatre. Homelessness is a highly visible and controversial issue in Victoria and communities across the country. Verbatim theatre refers to the process of constructing a play using dialogue drawn from interviews conducted with members of a community. Verbatim theatre facilitates the inclusion of voices not usually heard - in the theatre or elsewhere. It allows us to bring many sides of the homelessness discussion to the stage. This project fits well within the Belfry's mission to produce contemporary theatre that generates ideas and dialogue, and that helps our audience to see the world from different perspectives.

Fall Away Home

Our proposal is to mount an original site-specific multidisciplinary performance in the summer of 2013 entitled 'Fall Away Home'. A mash up of live feed video, animation, improvised music and contemporary performance, Fall Away Home will be an extraordinary experience for an intergeneration audience in an unconventional space that will transform our perception of who we are, where we came from and our relationship to the place we call home. Thematically the work draws on the grim realities of human trafficking. Careful to avoid perpetuating dated stereotypes, the work will be a fiction/fairytale drawn from contemporary research and first hand interviews with human trafficking victims. Working with the Vancouver Port Authority, our vision is to perform the piece down at the port or near to it, on the water's edge. The setting will be constructed out of shipping containers stacked three and four stories high alongside cranes and other industrial machinery. This all-ages piece will explore the world of children who are not entirely in control of their own lives and destiny.

Centennial Building in honor of BC Forest Service, Elks Lodge, 4-H & Co-op Movem

Our project is twofold. Since the Museum's relocation to the new Heritage Site at Fructova, larger items located in the Gyro Park display such as the Community logging exhibit and other related artifacts are not being taken care of because of inadequate space and/or poor building design. Although the items are being restored at no charge by our local Woodworker's Guild, once completed we do not have suitable facilities to store or display them. Our proposed project will not only see the development of a dedicated space which will allow us to showcase forestry and logging memorabilia which has been so important to our area, the interior 20' x 40' space will also give us an area where temporary displays and celebrations can take place. BC Forest Service celebrates their 100th Year Anniversary in 2012 as does the Elks Lodge 493 and the Co-operative movement of Canada. Next year is the 100th Anniversary of 4-H in Canada. The Boundary Museum Society would like play a part in their 100 year celebrations by hosting picnics as well as providing this exhibit space in their honor.

Cineworks Independent Filmmakers' Society

Terra Nullius: Commissioned Film by Banchi Hanuse

The project facilitates the production a short film (under 30 minutes) by emerging First Nations filmmaker Banchi Hanuse (Nuxalk), whose first film, Cry Rock, has been nominated for several awards since its premiere at National Geographic's All Roads Film Festival, including Best Documentary Short at the 2010 American Indian Film Festival. This film explores a local narrative from Hanuse's community in Bella Coola, BC, and centres upon traditional and contemporary notions of land ownership, incorporating animated elements to interweave past and present day narratives. Looking at the idea of Terra Nullius, the term from Roman Law meaning 'no man's land', the film will portray a visually evocative story from Nuxalk tradition that is tethered to present day realities. A full website with film clips will be produced in conjunction. This film would be presented at three local venues (Cineworks Annex, Pacific Cinematheque, and The Cultch), and 5 locations across Canada (Victoria, Winnipeg, Toronto, and St. John's), including the Banff Centre for the Arts, who have partnered on these events.

Creation of 'DVOTE: Lust, Madness and Mayhem'

Noam Gagnon's creative impulse is to delve into personal experiences to create transcendent performances. This has drawn him to collaborate with Nova Bhattacharya, a highly regarded Toronto-based dance artist trained in classical Indian dance. It may seem the two artists from different cultural and dance backgrounds have little in common, but their independent work reveals a shared fascination with the autobiographical. 'DVOTE: Lust, Madness and Mayhem' is their shared investigation into themes of devotion, submission, sexuality and spirituality. Playing with the twinned notions of voyeurism and exhibitionism, DVOTE is an intimate journey that blurs the traditional lines of performance and confessional. DVOTE exposes the continuum of submission and control that begins with the socially sanctioned relationship between performer and audience, and ends somewhere between master and slave. Conflating the opposing ideas of public performance and intensely private experiences of sexuality and spirituality, the work hopes to expose personal taboos and challenge current social discourse.

Colonial

Colonial is a full evening work of contemporary dance based on life in a colonized society and the effects on the individual, choreographed by Alvin Erasga Tolentino, with creative partners; Dennis Gupa, Theatre Director and Dramaturge; Filipino Video Artist Ted Armitanio and two senior Filipino pioneering choreographers, Denisa Reyes and Agnes Locsin. Their expertise will help facilitate and strengthen the company's growth to incorporate and open further interpretive techniques through other media such as theatre, interviews and dialogue. The project has the support of PETA and UPLB in the Philippines, MAI in Montreal and the Roundhouse in Vancouver, the creative process will be opened up to the local dance communities and general public through a series of open rehearsals and unique workshops. The opportunity to learn more about Filipino culture and history through dance is a rare prospect and one that will have a great impact on the partners involved as well as the significant Filipino community of Canada.

Expansion of Archive & Artifact Collection Rooms

The proposed project will expand the size of the existing Museum, by constructing a West Wing with 2 new rooms adding 240 square feet. This project addresses the infrastructure challenges of working in an old building with very limited space, by creating a purpose-built space to house our growing Artifact & Archive Collections in proper climate controlled rooms, a public archives research room, a workroom for creating exhibits. At the moment, our ability to expand our successful Public Education & Archives Programs is constrained by space limitations to house and access the Archive & Artifact Collections. These collections provide materials for these growing programs; which in turn influence our revenues, as some of the programs raise funds for museum development. To ensure financial sustainability, the CIMAS board has made the building expansion a priority.

Joe Laughlin Retrospective

DV is requesting support for Vancouver choreographer Joe Laughlin's retrospective project. The project includes a new commission, a remount of two older pieces and the reworking of a fourth. These four pieces will comprise a production that will be given two performances at the McPherson Playhouse, February 6 and 7, 2013 as part of Dance Victoria's 2012/13 Resident Artist Season. Next year marks 25 years since Laughlin began making dance. During that time he has created over 40 pieces. This project brings together three of his strongest and best-loved short works and a new commission that he will set on Ballet Victoria. Laughlin is DV's Artist-in-Residence in 2012/13. The production will include a work for four dancers from 1997 (Harold, Billy, Stan and Jack), a duet for a man and a tea cup (Left, 2003) and a 2011 work entitled dusk. In addition to the work with Ballet Victoria, Laughlin will re-work dusk in Victoria. When not in Victoria he will work with his company in Vancouver. All of the pieces will be combined and the transitions developed at DV's fully-equipped Studio 2.

TRIPTYCH - Artistic Development for large-scale theatrical production

Electric Company is commissioning, developing and producing a theatrical adaptation of three recent collections by some of Vancouver's most exciting female writers (Jennica Harper, Elizabeth Bachinsky, and Marita Daschel) in an immersive fusion of theatre, poetry and visual art. Appearing in three parts across three venues as a special, featured event at the International Writers Festival as a part of their 25th anniversary, TRIPTYCH (working title) celebrates the vitality of the local literary scene as well as the creative potency and invention that has identified Vancouver's independent theatre community as national leaders in the form. In the tradition of such celebrated Canadian installation artists as Janet Cardiff and George Mueller, the viewer of TRIPTYCH is given an intensely active role in the creation of the experience. We're inspired to combine this aesthetic quality with theatre's capacity to tell a strong story within a communal or group experience wherein we break down the isolating components in our culture and encourage contact, collaboration and community.

Norwegian Spring

Through the 'Norwegian Spring' project, Elektra's priorities are to learn, to experience cultural and musical exchange, and to share the results with the public at the highest artistic level. Norwegian conductor, Maria Gamborg Helbekkmo, is one of the finest conductors of women's choirs in the world. With decades of exemplary leadership, she is an artist and a teacher and all involved will grow immeasurably from their contact with her. Primarily, the full-length concert format will combine Ms. Edmundson, Artistic Director of Elektra, and Ms. Helbekkmo's presentation of Norwegian, Canadian and other repertoire new to Elektra and to Vancouver audiences through a true artistic, cultural exchange and collaboration. The most important goal of this project will be the fostering of bonds between communities: Elektra (a week long schedule of rehearsal and mentorship), Mira (Elektra's high school mentorship program), local conductors and choristers (BCCF and Kiwanis Music Festival), and choral students from UBC, allowing for observation, robust engagement and social connection.

Know Your Treasures

"Know Your Treasures" 2013 Exhibition in the new Gordon Smith Gallery. The "Know Your Treasures" exhibition will introduce the community to the extensive teaching collection of Canadian art which North Vancouver School District's Artists for Kids program has acquired since 1990. This outstanding community owned resource depicts significant ideas developed by 48 of our country's leading artists. The AfK collection will also become the basis for on-going winter exhibition and education programming for the Smith Gallery in the future. Engaging the community with this new public art gallery and developing pride and ownership in this new artistic resource is the primary goal of the "Know Your Treasures" exhibition. Through broad marketing, the development of an exhibition catalogue, an artists symposium, school and community programs, weekly artist talks, interactive displays and introducing a 'Treasures' gift shop, audiences young and old will gain a greater knowledge of Canadian artists, their work and the important role visual art plays in our contemporary culture.

Kaleidoscope Theatre for Young People

War of the Eagles

WAR OF THE EAGLES is an original Kaleidoscope Theatre work based on the novel by BC writer Eric Walters. Set at the Prince Rupert army base during World War II, we meet Jed - a Tsimshian/Caucasian boy, and his best friend of Japanese decent, Tadashi. Following the Japanese Canadian Internment, Jed must confront racism, the complexity of friendship, and his own mixed-cultural identity. The staging of WAR OF THE EAGLES on the historical site of Esquimalt's Macaulay Point, includes beach, ocean and dismantled gun turrets to reflect the themes of Walter's novel for youth by creating warlike or camp environments. Our young audience (jr/sr high school) will be guided through various outdoor spaces to provide an immersive, personal 'out-of-the-box' theatrical experience. Director Roderick Glanville will work with Dramaturg Ian Ferguson to create a physical and emotional journey for youth to reflect contemporary hope and understanding. Funding will support a key creation period followed by a production period. Support will help employ a larger cast (5 Equity actors, 3 youth) required.

KISSM Band Expansion Project

The project that we are proposing would be an expansion of our current, successful Band Program. This project is being implemented to respond to an identified need. After interviewing music educators, parents and students we found that additional levels of band education would greatly augment this very popular program. The Band Expansion project is being introduced to respond to the growing demand for a higher level of excellence in music education at KISSM. The project will integrate the existing three levels of band with an additional 4th level of advanced instruction intended for music students playing at a very high level who are wishing to go on to post-secondary music education. Additional master classes will be offered as well which will give our students and faculty the benefit of learning from their peers. This project will have numerous benefits, including improved level of play, increased awareness of music professionalism and a greater awareness of available arts opportunities.

Just Imagine

Just Imagine is a project about art and vision impairment. This project will explore what it means to be human, and the multitude of ways that people see, and respond to the world around them. It will provoke people to think beyond typical notions of 'seeing' and to consider the potential of creative expression. Just Imagine includes an exhibition curated by local blind artist Ruth Bieber, and numerous community programs. The exhibition features four artists, three from North America, and one from Germany. Community programs include a roundtable discussion about new ideas in the fields of art, psychology, and vision impairment, hands-on workshops for individuals who are vision impaired, Family Sunday's activities for the general public, and tour programs. Accessibility will be a major focus of the project. The exhibition brochure, didactic panels, and labels will be printed in both large format text and Braille. Works of art that visitors can touch, and a video of the artists speaking about their work will provide information for those who learn through touch and hearing.

The Kelowna Summer Theatre Festival

The new Kelowna Summer Theatre Festival will offer a light summer fare of repertory theatre in an outdoor venue where it is hoped, it will be widely appealing for both local audiences and visitors alike. Our company members will be employed theatre school students, or recent graduates who are launching their careers in theatre. Such students will gain valuable experience having some significant roles in a repertory company, an asset for their resumes as well as a moderate income over part of the summer. Given the Okanagan's climate and surroundings, we believe that the idea of a seasonal outdoor theatre festival in Kelowna will be widely supported in the community. Running the KSTF as a repertory company, allows out-of-town patrons and residents with visitors, the opportunity to see more than one show if they are in town for a few days. We took the model of repertory theatre from other long-standing and successful companies from around the country.

Malaspina Printmakers Society

Residential Schools Exhibition, (formal title is pending)

In September 2013 The Truth and Reconciliation Commission will meet in Vancouver to conclude its five year mandate of listening to the stories of aboriginal people across Canada, pertaining to their experience in the Indian Residential Schools. These Final Dialogues will bring to a conclusion the retelling of a very painful part of Canadian history that has had little airing in the past 150 years. Discussing the truth will be one part of it. Malaspina intends to also act within the Reconciliation aspect. It is our intention to mount an exhibition of Aboriginal work in three separate locations: the Malaspina Gallery, the Concourse Gallery of Emily Carr University and the Urban Aboriginal Fair Trade Gallery, between 16 and 30 of Sept, 2013. The work would depict images associated with the Aboriginal experience of the Indian Residential Schools. The work will be done by people who directly experienced this trauma as well as those from successive generations who are still affected by it. The show will coincide with the Commission's Final Dialogues, Sept 18-21, 2013

The Ginger Goodwin Project

TheatreOne aims to develop and produce a new play based on the life of coal miner and labour activist Albert "Ginger" Goodwin, an iconic figure to many British Columbians especially those whose parents and grandparents were caught up in the struggle for fair and safe working conditions when coal mines on Vancouver Island and across the country were at their peak. We're now working toward a 6 day workshop with playwright Michael Stephen and 5 professional actors in July 2012. We'll need funding to follow-up with a 3-day workshop in Nov. and to take the play through to a full production in April 2013. The Ginger Goodwin Story has been conceived as an ensemble piece; a core group of actors will play all the parts. During the workshop we will explore every aspect of the script and how the ensemble can best be utilized. Between Nov. and Mar. the writer will channel what we discover into work on a final draft . Production will include a large cast and crew, and a projection based set design using archival photographs to evoke the historical context, and set each scene with ease.

BC In Song - Creating Legends

Folk music traditions exploit story telling as a means to pass historical lessons from generation to generation. Artistic Director Ross Desprez is inspired to build a richer folk tradition on the west coast of Canada and to acknowledge our past through song and story. Paired with this interest in folklore is Desprez's theatrical bent which is constantly searching for new and interesting ways to convey stories through dramatic action. To this end the Other Guys Theatre intends to research and compile events from British Columbia’s past and experiment with ways to translate historical events into folklore. Our ultimate goal is to create a theatrical piece comprised of West Coast events by transforming them from simple events into folk legends through theatre, song and storytelling. Our process will involve exploring different folk story telling techniques and apply them to local events. At this early stage Desprez envisions a collection of dramatic stories and songs intended to enlighten the audience as to aspects of BC's history creating a West Coast folk music tradition.

Beneath the Northern Lights (working title)

We will create a 'Theatre for Young Audiences' production combining Inuit legends, physical theatre, mask, puppetry, video projection, and traditional throat-singing. When director Heidi Specht met Inuit storyteller and award-winning author Michael Kusugak, they found they shared common goals. Michael works hard to preserve his traditional culture and to share it with the world. Our production will inter-weave traditional stories with Michael's life; he will play himself both as a young boy and an adult as he struggles to adapt to a changing world. We will work together to seamlessly combine Michael's mastery of oral storytelling with Pangaea Arts' expertise in physical theatrical forms, in an effort to increase the range and appeal of his message – large polar bears, walruses, creatures from Inuit mythology will share the space with projections of northern lights, and audiences will see the inside of an igloo. We will target young audiences, while sending a message to all ages, encouraging others to find their own cultural stories and building bridges across communities.

The End of the World as We Know It

The End of the World as We Know It, plays off the contemporary phenomena and endless fodder of conspiracy theorists who believe in the end of the Mayan calendar on December 21. Over the six weeks of the exhibition the gallery will be transformed by six unique teams of artists blending music, visual arts and dance in an exploration of contemporary electronic culture exemplified by the rave community. The tragic deaths due to individuals having taken tainted Ecstasy has once again cast a dark shadow over the rave community. The accompanying weekly workshops will provide frank and in depth discussions on all aspects of the culture and will bring together a range of experts, health professionals and artists in a highly publicized public forum to answer questions regarding all aspects of their culture and community. This is an opportunity for the community to come together in a public forum to talk about the rave community and demystify the culture and public perception and celebrate the transformative power of art, culminating with the all ages, End of the World Party on December 21.

Perspective Arts Foundation o/a New Forms Media Arts Society

"Locating the City" (Community Workshop/Performance/Exhibition)

The project involves mapping and visualizing the City of Vancouver, then creating a participatory installation with the images, sounds, and content recorded. The process begins with a workshop for participants (artists, practitioners, theorists, performers and audience/community members) around means of gathering visual data about the urban space. Over the week, participants will go out into areas of Vancouver and document imagery, sound, etc, using cellphone cameras, recorders and other mobile devices. Each area will then be 'mapped', with this content then forming the basis of a 'digital scrapbook' formed around the City itself. Mentoring artists will work with the groups to document info on their 'digital precinct' Each precinct will become a documentation hub, relaying the information to the central projection location. Captured imagery is then transferred online to the main installation space, the media will also be projected at other sites (e.g. Woodwards & Canada Line stations). In addition, we are expecting thousands more to view it online and through social media.

Slowpoke

Slowpoke is a new, original dance/theatre performance inspired by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster in the Ukraine. The project was timed with the 25th anniversary of the accident and preceded the Fukushima nuclear incident, now reported to be as serious, or potentially worse, than Chernobyl. Slowpoke will take inspiration from these incidents and the science of nuclear power, while also exploring the human struggle and resiliency attached to the events. It will be a highly physical show, incorporating text and movement in a roving outdoor performance. The name of the show comes from the 'Slowpoke' (acronym for Safe Low-Power Kritical Experiment), a small nuclear reactor built on many Canadian universities in the 1960's, some still in use today. In 2011 Slowpoke co-creators Billy Marchenski and Alison Denham visited the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone for a first-hand experience of the site. Their interviews and experiences in and around The Zone will inform the show's creation.
