SUN DRUM: First Nation Youth Media Pilot Project

The Sun Drum project (name developed by Cree Youth) -- Sun connects to original power, drum to the heartbeat -- features video storytelling and was born through conversations with First Nation elders, leaders and youth. Video is highly effective in oral cultures; it brings to the world the strength of culture present in First Nation communities and builds self-esteem. It is also our experience that video can create powerful links between stories of the ancestors through elders in a context that attracts and empowers youth as storytellers. This project will harness the depth of cultures to align with sustainability objectives, cultural preservation, skills building and will point to entrepreneurship and economic development. We will build 4 core capacities: 1/basics of storytelling, story boarding and interviewing and basic video skills 2/ social media to share and send positive messages about First Nations 3/clean energy, jobs and economic opportunities, linked to culture in context of climate change 4/ social entrepreneurship basics: problem, solution = business models

Sensory Motor Integration Program

A new reality is facing CHSC. Today at least 35% of newly identified deaf and hard of hearing children are coming to the Centre with additional learning needs. Our new Sensory Motor Integration Program will begin to address these needs with assessments and support from a trained occupational therapist that delivers ongoing program implementation and provides outcome analysis. We believe this additional early intervention is critical for a child to learn to listen and speak and ultimately be successfully mainstreamed into a school with their hearing peers.

Collingwood Neighbourhood House Society

Vancouver Neighbourhood Food Network Hub

While NFNs successfully work at the neighbourhood level, there is an identified need for NFNs to scale up their efforts for higher levels of influence. Networks now formally collaborate through a city-wide working group — the foundation for the hub —where they continue to expand on best practices, mentor new NFNs, and undertake joint projects. The recent 'Sustainability on the Table' (attached) report presents recommendations for Vancouver’s NFNs to build Network capacity and sustainability in order to move NFNs forward in their intent to create city-wide food systems change and increasing levels of food security among marginalized populations. We are therefore seeking resources to help NFNs follow through on several of the report’s recommendations in the following priority areas over a three year period. 1. Increase supports to participate in various policy tables, committees and engagement processes 2. Develop city-wide NFNs communications 3. Build a business case for NFN development and funding 4. Support workshops and professional development opportunities

Protecting and Restoring the Courtenay River Estuary

The Estuary Working Group (EWG), representing 13 environmental organisations is currently working on eelgrass and habitat restoration, carbon sequestration research, a National Historic Status bid, and yearly awareness campaigns. The EWG has participated with the Comox Valley Regional District in revising a Courtenay River Estuary Management Plan, originally created in 2000 but never implemented. The revised plan needs the support of local municipalities. They were invited to take part in revising the plan but declined to do so. We propose to create an interactive animated 3D map of the estuary to illustrate changes over time, the problems that need to be addressed and present various scenarios for resolving these challenges. The complexity and interconnectedness of the estuary’s ecosystems, examples of economic development compatible with a healthy functioning estuary, and potential social and recreational benefits will be highlighted. In creating the map we intend to engage local officials, planners, and other stakeholders in data gathering and visioning a desired future estuary.

Stable Management Vocational Development

CTRA offers several spheres of programming which contain individualized sub-programs (for example: introduction to competition, therapeutic horsemanship). We are hoping to develop and implement a “Stable Management Vocational Training” program under our “education” sphere, creating a vocational development program for persons with disabilities in the areas of equine husbandry, horsemanship, and stable management. This program would run parallel to our already existing therapeutic programs, running for 10 week sessions at a time. Participants will engage in a mixture of theory, applied lessons, and hands-on (supervised) practice – according to their ability and goals. Class would be appropriately limited and grouped to ensure adequate supervision and quality of instruction and will be taught by our CanTRA-certified instructors. As clients progress, we intend to provide opportunities in volunteer roles (as appropriate), in the intention of providing opportunities for applied development & bridging the gap between education and active participation in the local employment economy.

To redevelop our existing school-based programs into one program for developing conflict management & communication skills for elementary schools with an emphasis on cultural inclusion and competency for the whole school community. This program is based on extensive targeted, thematic research in anti-bullying, conflict management education, and programming for newcomer children. It will include expansion of existing curriculum to include grades K-5 (currently aimed at grades 3 & 4), development of materials for families and school staff, development and inclusion of formative and summative evaluations and training for facilitators. We will work in partnership with at least one pilot school and will maintain our strong relationship with School District 61 leadership. We will move away from a 'pull out' model for working with newcomers and towards a more diversity-inclusive group model. There will be a strong emphasis on the links between thinking and behaviour.

Beethoven, Bob and Borealis in BC

In this project the distinguished pianist Robert Silverman and British Columbia's principle string quartet, the Borealis String Quartet, will be undertaking a substantial series of concerts across British Columbia in 2013. It is the intention that the Society look for opportunities for these performers to play public concerts as well as to play two hundred 45-minute concerts in residential care environments. The performers have expressed a keen interest in undertaking these concerts. The Society has established a relationship with the homes to which these programmes will be provided and anticipates an average of forty attendees at each concert. In 200 concerts, an audience of 8,000-10,000 will be reached.

Langley Neighbourhood Development Project

Over the past year, senior managers of Langley non-profit and Government service providers have worked together to develop an overarching strategic plan for services based on demographic data, community parent surveys and input from youth, early childhood, special needs and middle childhood groups. This strategic plan was developed and reviewed by staff working in the community, and representatives of the faith, Aboriginal and multicultural communities. Our next steps are to engage the broader community (e.g. business and other community groups) as well as parents and youth to complete an asset inventory. We will engage neighbourhood to discuss local and community assets and how to best fill immediate gaps for children, youth and families. We are requesting funding tol support this process and start up of services.

Kutz & Dawgs BC Regional Tour - Year One

Tour, HD video documentation, free webcast/screenings, evaluation with Social Psychologist Dr. George Tien. Reach larger audience in cities where gangs flourish and provide youth artists with professional tour experience. Our professional team and performing arts youth will co-lead theatre, dance and hip hop music workshops and film screenings for at-risk youth in Surrey, Kelowna and Prince George with facilitated discussion and work with UBC Okanagan Theatre Department to present events with and for students and faculty. Tour will develop artistic skills of professional team and youth cast, show leadership and innovation in community-engaged theatre and open doorways to arts careers. Professional HD video crew will document/edit Kutz & Dawgs performances. Screenings/webcasts presented before each workshop. Social media will enable youth audience members to communicate with performers and professionals, interaction with fans, workshop participants, students and access to urban music from our play. In 3 cities, will set up a larger tour of the play in 2013 - 2014 for Year 2.

Pacific Post Partum Support Society

Expanding Postpartum Assistance to Underserved Populations across B.C.

The Project is divided into two parts. 1.The Multicultural Training Program will address higher risks for postpartum distress in immigrant women by (a) directing 2 8-hour training sessions per year for 2 years, resulting in a total of 60 staff and volunteers based out of multicultural agencies (in any B.C. community requesting training) who would then in turn administer assistance to at least 200 immigrant mothers and families, and (b) recruiting 15 multilingual telephone volunteers with varied cultural backgrounds over 2 years to meet the needs of non-English speaking women across B.C. over our toll-free line. 2. The Remote Access Cognitive Behavioural Techniques & Skills Program will monitor 20-30 mothers in remote areas who otherwise may be unable to access medical professionals and facilitated groups. We implement 8 prescribed weekly modules with each woman over our toll-free telephone line, fostering skills to assist women with their recovery from postpartum depression/anxiety.

Building capacity for salmon stewardship - traditional fish weir in the Koeye

The weir project aims to build capacity, and increase engagement in resource stewardship in the Heiltsuk community of Bella Bella by resurrecting the traditional practice of building fish weirs on the Koeye River. Fish weirs were used for thousands of years by First Nations as a means of selectively harvesting salmon in large rivers; however the practice has been dormant in Central Coast communities for more than 100 years. The project stems from Qqs’ core mission of engaging youth in Heiltsuk culture and their environment, and builds upon existing youth and environment programs at Koeye, creating a unique opportunity to involve young people in a project that provides critical data for the conservation of Heiltsuk resources. The Koeye is among the most important salmon producing streams in Heiltsuk territory. Enumeration of salmon using the traditional fish weir, would greatly enhance our understanding of salmon within Koeye, and would have broad relevance for understanding salmon populations throughout the region.

Going Wild!

The Going Wild! school program was created in partnership with Coastal First Nations community stakeholders to reconnect youth with their environment and their cultures, and to revitalize rural economic development in sustainable and culturally-appropriate ways. Now moving beyond a First Nations audience, the curriculum is being used to engages grade 4-7 students throughout BC in hands-on activities that teach about wild products , or non-timber forest products (NTFPs), of the coastal temperate rainforest. Classroom activities delivered by our Educators (or by teachers using our guidebook as a resource), help students gain knowledge of wild products, traditional First Nations values, ecosystem dynamics, stewardship of the forest, human relationships with nature, economy, consumption patterns and entrepreneurship. All lessons are directly linked to BC Ministry of Education prescribed learning outcomes (PLOs) for Science, Social Studies and Physical Education. Funding will support program delivery, teacher professional development, action projects, and program evaluation.

Youth Media Literacy

Fifteen First Nations youth from the Youth Empowerment Program (YEP) centres (Smithers, Hazelton, Moricetown and Houston) will create Digital Stories that will be developed from recorded interviews conducted by the youth with First Nations elders in the community. The project engages a number of community groups including the Bulkley Valley Museum, the Smithers Public Library, School District #54, First Nations groups, and CICK 93.9FM Youth Outreach Workers from the YEP centres have identified that many First Nations youth they serve suffer from a lack of cultural esteem that affects educational success and that perpetuates a cycle of marginalization. Provincial statistics demonstrate that only 51% of First Nations students are completing highschool graduation. Youth participants will have the opportunity to engage in inter-generational learning, learn about critical analysis of media, develop interview coaching skills, and create digital stories, gain critical thinking skills and will be eligible to obtain credit for Applied Skills Grade 11.

Early Learning Hub & Indoor Playground Programming

The Kiwanis Early Learning Hub opened in 2011. The indoor playground is a big hit with families with birth to 6 years olds. These families have requested extended hours of operation for the indoor playground and for some specific programming to operate out of the Hub. Vancouver Foundation programming would include: - Playtime: weekday afternoon opening of the indoor playground for parent / child interactive play. - Positive Discipline: a weekly supervised playtime while parents are involved in ongoing support with behavioural management. - Daddy & Me: dads will be invited to bring their children for a weekly playtime with the focus on the unique and vital role fathers have in their child’s life. - Books & Pajamas: parents will be invited for a weekly playtime, followed by a bedtime snack, getting into pajamas and cuddling for a story time before going home to bed. - Nothing Like Home Cooking! Classes: parents will learn that cooking from scratch is fun and nutritious. Child minding will be provided for for parents in this class. - Saturday Family Fun Day!: playtime every month.

Building Community through Digital Story (BCDS)

Building on a successful pilot project - where participants worked through the composition of story, collected photo & video to support their stories, & explored creative ways to enhance story using technology & multi-media equipment and software– this new Building Community through Digital Story (BCDS) project puts the development & power of storytelling in the hands of our community and youth, and offers educational and professional-level training. Upon completion participants will receive a certificate of completion. Through a partnership with Royal Roads University and with in-kind support from additional partners, Tsawout's Snepeneks Cultural Society is building opportunities in education by offering this multidisciplinary course that will provide: 1) Opportunities for youth and elders to work together in the preservation of language and culture, 2) opportunities for an exchange of skills and knowledge, youth using media, and elders and traditional knowledge, and 3) Opportunities to re-engage youth in education, , cultural practices, community events, and training.

Visualizing Urban Futures with Community Energy

Public understanding and behaviour change on energy use is critical to reducing carbon footprints and building resilient communities. Since the idea of low-carbon community-wide energy systems is new in Canada, most people have little idea how typical neighbourhoods in Metro Vancouver can be retrofitted to be climate friendly. CALP proposes to engage communities, using compelling new visualisation tools to actively involve non-experts in learning about community energy. This proposal builds on an ongoing research study with Neptis Foundation and the GEOIDE Network Centre of Excellence, which is developing prototype visualization tools - "digital stories" about community energy, based on data in two pilot BC municipalities: Richmond and Surrey. This project will help build awareness and community capacity for climate change solutions. It will involve multiple stakeholders in developing a visual information toolkit for use in demonstrations, workshops, and web media to reach the "silent majority" who are often not engaged in social learning and community decision-making.
