Cortes Island Museum and Archives Society

Expansion of Archive & Artifact Collection Rooms

The proposed project will expand the size of the existing Museum, by constructing a West Wing with 2 new rooms adding 240 square feet. This project addresses the infrastructure challenges of working in an old building with very limited space, by creating a purpose-built space to house our growing Artifact & Archive Collections in proper climate controlled rooms, a public archives research room, a workroom for creating exhibits. At the moment, our ability to expand our successful Public Education & Archives Programs is constrained by space limitations to house and access the Archive & Artifact Collections. These collections provide materials for these growing programs; which in turn influence our revenues, as some of the programs raise funds for museum development. To ensure financial sustainability, the CIMAS board has made the building expansion a priority.

Cowichan Family Caregivers Support Society

Being Heard: A Youth Caregivers Program

This three year project is a natural extension of the successful Ending the Silence project which uncovered the challenges faced by youth caregivers. These youth courageously take on responsibilities beyond their years to care for a family member in need. They work hard to keep their families together and often feel overwhelmed because they have nowhere to turn for help. Struggling alone with the stresses of their role can adversely affect their mental and physical health, relationships, schooling, job prospects and finances. This project is the first in BC to develop a program that supports these valiant but troubled youth. The program will include: support groups; 1-on-1 emotional support; family support; work with health-care, education and social service systems to provide respite, help at school and other supports in the mainstream and First Nations communities. Two areas of focus will be outreach to youth caregivers and training for service providers. All work will be guided by a youth-led resource team of diverse youth, including caregiving youth, and mentoring adults.

Stable Management Vocational Development

CTRA offers several spheres of programming which contain individualized sub-programs (for example: introduction to competition, therapeutic horsemanship). We are hoping to develop and implement a “Stable Management Vocational Training” program under our “education” sphere, creating a vocational development program for persons with disabilities in the areas of equine husbandry, horsemanship, and stable management. This program would run parallel to our already existing therapeutic programs, running for 10 week sessions at a time. Participants will engage in a mixture of theory, applied lessons, and hands-on (supervised) practice – according to their ability and goals. Class would be appropriately limited and grouped to ensure adequate supervision and quality of instruction and will be taught by our CanTRA-certified instructors. As clients progress, we intend to provide opportunities in volunteer roles (as appropriate), in the intention of providing opportunities for applied development & bridging the gap between education and active participation in the local employment economy.

Compassionate Leaders

The Compassionate Leaders Project is aimed at strengthening youth leadership development and civic engagement. This includes local youth and youth who are newcomers to Canada. The project will utilize much of the CIS Inclusive Leadership curriculum in its design, skill-building, action planning and shared leadership facilitation. The project involves: 1. Networking and collaboration work with School District 79. 2. Facilitating skill workshops to 60 – 100 students in each of the five secondary schools of School District 79. The workshop is a condensed version of CIS’s locally developed ‘Inclusive Leadership Adventure’ curriculum to guide students to replace instinctive fight-flight reactions; respect differences in language, accent, dress, and appearance; use inclusive leadership skills and stand up for diversity. It is facilitated by 5 to 10 trained facilitators. 3. Hosting a two-day session of Inclusive Leadership Adventure to 50 – 80 youths from Secondary Schools of School District 79. 4. Pet First Aid Course

Walks 'N Wags Pet First Aid Course ( www.petstrainingservices.com/firstaid ) is a longstanding national pet first aid program. We will invite Instructor Penny Korethoski of Nelson BC to provide this 10 hour pet first aid instruction course for approximately 25 PAWS volunteers. The course teaches skills for dealing with cat and dog emergencies including: - bleeding, broken bones and other wounds - choking - CPR - recognizing the early signs of illness - ways to prevent injuries and illness - includes a manual and 'quick guide' - certificate provided on completion of exam This program will be of great benefit to the animals at the PAWS shelter as well as educating volunteers and enabling them to provide more complete and effective care for the animals, as well as being able to respond and react appropriately if and when a pet becomes ill or injured. The costs include: registration costs for 25 volunteers at$140.00 each - $3500.00 transportation, food and accommodation for the instructor - $350.00 meeting room rental - $300.00 supplies - $200.00

Sole Food Farm will develop an Urban Orchard on one of our established urban farm sites. We will continue to employ residents of the DTES and provide hands-on skills training in grafting, planting, pruning, maintaining and harvesting fruit trees in an urban environment. This project will directly increase the amount and diversity of local food made available in our community while reducing food miles, increasing urban tree canopy, and diversifying native pollinator food sources.

Dance Victoria

Joe Laughlin Retrospective

DV is requesting support for Vancouver choreographer Joe Laughlin's retrospective project. The project includes a new commission, a remount of two older pieces and the reworking of a fourth. These four pieces will comprise a production that will be given two performances at the McPherson Playhouse, February 6 and 7, 2013 as part of Dance Victoria's 2012/13 Resident Artist Season. Next year marks 25 years since Laughlin began making dance. During that time he has created over 40 pieces. This project brings together three of his strongest and best-loved short works and a new commission that he will set on Ballet Victoria. Laughlin is DV's Artist-in-Residence in 2012/13. The production will include a work for four dancers from 1997 (Harold, Billy, Stan and Jack), a duet for a man and a tea cup (Left, 2003) and a 2011 work entitled dusk. In addition to the work with Ballet Victoria, Laughlin will re-work dusk in Victoria. When not in Victoria he will work with his company in Vancouver. All of the pieces will be combined and the transitions developed at DV's fully-equipped Studio 2.

Protecting the Peace: Enhancing Local Voices in the Greater Peace Break Region

The Peace Break Region supports agriculture and diverse wildlife, including threatened populations of bull trout, grizzly, fisher, and woodland caribou. The region has been severely degraded by logging, mining, oil and gas development and earlier large-scale hydro development. The region's lowlands are dominated by seismic lines, fracking operations, roads, pipeline crossings and other industrial infrastructure that seriously threaten the region's critical ecosystem services that regulate climate, disease outbreaks, and wastes, and that provide aesthetic, recreational and spiritual value. Unfortunately, the true worth of the region's natural capital is often poorly understood by policy-makers. For this reason the DSF and its partner West Moberly FN are proposing to complete a full natural capital valuation that will inventory and enumerate, in dollar terms, the non-market wealth of the region. This research will be accompanied by online mapping and other public engagement tools that will communicate the importance of natural capital to sustaining communities in the north.

New Voices, New Dialogues

We are developing a network of partners to increase social connectedness in Delta. Evidence suggests that individual organizations are struggling to be wholly inclusive. Many have indicated a desire to connect with other organizations and stakeholders with little capacity to do this effectively. We will bring together non-traditional partners to create unique collaborative practices. Diversity will create a synergy that informs, communicates, advocates, and engages members in sustainable community solutions. According to Wightman (Spring 2012) local engagement strategies are weak and communities must find ways to engage citizens (p. 7). We will accomplish this through action based research and community engagement. The first stage of the project is to engage local organizations and businesses in dialogue to help identify assets and gaps that impact social isolation. The second stage will be to create a community plan with broad community input. Forums will occur in each of Delta's three communities to leverage social capital and implement the recommendations locally.

Sports and Me Program

Sport and Me program is a partnership project between DIVERSEcity and the City of Surrey to provide outreach, family support, and sports readiness services to multi-barriered and Government Assisted Refugee (GAR) children. The project reaches out to children with the goal to provide a safe environment where they often have their first exposure to a recreation center and rec services, and the opportunity to learn sport etiquette, language and skill. Through this route, children can feel comfortable participating in school and community sports/recreation as they understand expectations around participation. The project also provides nutritional support through teaching of healthy children’s development, nutritional snacks/meals, and link to physical health opportunities – with the goal to engage children in active living for life. The funding request to the Vancouver Foundation will allow us to expand the current program and increase participation with other multi-barriered newcomer and at-risk children.

Child and Youth Empowerment Camps (CYEC)

The CYEC provides a safe, supportive environment where children who have experienced/ witnessed abuse, have a mental health diagnosis or are isolated (i.e belong to marginalized communities) can share experiences, identify and talk about feelings, improve self-esteem, and enhance communication and conflict resolution skills. The CYE camps are free full-day camps, held one week at a time in schools, divided up based on age and run during school breaks (spring, summer). Nearly 200 participants attended the last spring and summer camps. The camp's innovation comes from the delivery model utilized: it uses a team approach, using staff from several different counselling and outreach programs, all of whom have different expertise they share in individual, small-group work and workshops. There is also significant time devoted to indoor and outdoor play activities and opportunities to connect with community resources. Partners in the camps include police, fire, school districts, and city recreational services. The camps have been so popular that several cities have requested them

Family Drop-in: Families, Farming and Food

A safe drop-in space for families in the Downtown Eastside (M-F and Sunday from 4-7pm) This program has been developed to improve the determinants of health for families and children in our community through a program emphasis on food literacy, healthy meal preparation, culinary exploration and urban farming practices. A major component to the program is that it will be based on a peer led model. Families will be recruited as both participants, but also as volunteers who will lead the program with the support of a paid coordinator to help actualize their vision within the scope of the project.

Feed the Bees Planting Program

The Feed the Bees Planting Program addresses root causes of pollinator decline by engaging widespread community action to plant "bee friendly" gardens at homes, schools, businesses and boulevards. The gardens will be mapped on-line to show how individual plantings collectively start to create habitat corridors, reducing habitat fragmentation and assisting in the movement of pollinator populations within urban areas. The Earthwise Garden is a learning resource for the project, demonstrating how ecological plantings of diverse flowering species enhance biodiversity. These concepts will be applied on a community wide scale to replace natural vegetation lost through development. Supporting the widespread adoption of specific planting programs that provide flowers over a long season helps to meet the habitat needs of pollinators. By engaging residents living in urban areas to help address a problem that impacts farming, the project creates greater awareness of how we are all interconnected and how individual actions can impact regional biodiversity and ecological health.

Litigation and Law Reform Response to the Budget Implementation Act (Bill C-38)

With the passage of Bill C-38, Canada’s Budget Implementation Act, key environmental laws are being dismantled. A legal problem requires a legal solution, and, as the leading environmental law organization in Canada, Ecojustice will respond to these challenges. The courts are independent of government and play a vitally important role in our democracy, perhaps now more than ever. The courts must be the forum where we argue for the rights of our citizens to be heard and that our prosperity depends on environmental protection. A response to changes in law must be strategic, informed, and collaborative. Under the supervision of a new Law and Policy Lead, Ecojustice will identify, develop and implement test case litigation to challenge the legality of new provisions or regulations to enable Bill C-38. We will play a leadership role within BC’s environmental community by building strategic partnerships and roles, and recruiting and educating new and diverse clients and allies to lay the groundwork for a long-term plan to restore federal environmental laws.

Play and Learn Academic Intervention Program

Play and Learn is a free, 4-week day-camp for low-income or Aboriginal children ages 6 to 9 years old who are not meeting expectations for their grade level in reading and math. The idea originated from concerns over students arriving to secondary school, unprepared. Research shows a gap in the level of achievement between children from low-income and higher income students; this gap begins in early grades and compounds year after year, attributed to the accessibility of programs to stimulate learning over the summer. Aboriginal students face an additional problem of feeling excluded when their culture is not perceived to be valued in school. This play-based learning intervention program is taught in small groups. Students participate in literacy, numeracy, recreation and Aboriginal Culture activities during the morning and field trips, crafts and physical games in the afternoons. We offer healthy meals because hungry kids cannot learn. The camp is staffed by remedial education teachers. We will expand to offer a year-round Play and Learn after school program in Year two.

TRIPTYCH - Artistic Development for large-scale theatrical production

Electric Company is commissioning, developing and producing a theatrical adaptation of three recent collections by some of Vancouver's most exciting female writers (Jennica Harper, Elizabeth Bachinsky, and Marita Daschel) in an immersive fusion of theatre, poetry and visual art. Appearing in three parts across three venues as a special, featured event at the International Writers Festival as a part of their 25th anniversary, TRIPTYCH (working title) celebrates the vitality of the local literary scene as well as the creative potency and invention that has identified Vancouver's independent theatre community as national leaders in the form. In the tradition of such celebrated Canadian installation artists as Janet Cardiff and George Mueller, the viewer of TRIPTYCH is given an intensely active role in the creation of the experience. We're inspired to combine this aesthetic quality with theatre's capacity to tell a strong story within a communal or group experience wherein we break down the isolating components in our culture and encourage contact, collaboration and community.

Norwegian Spring

Through the 'Norwegian Spring' project, Elektra's priorities are to learn, to experience cultural and musical exchange, and to share the results with the public at the highest artistic level. Norwegian conductor, Maria Gamborg Helbekkmo, is one of the finest conductors of women's choirs in the world. With decades of exemplary leadership, she is an artist and a teacher and all involved will grow immeasurably from their contact with her. Primarily, the full-length concert format will combine Ms. Edmundson, Artistic Director of Elektra, and Ms. Helbekkmo's presentation of Norwegian, Canadian and other repertoire new to Elektra and to Vancouver audiences through a true artistic, cultural exchange and collaboration. The most important goal of this project will be the fostering of bonds between communities: Elektra (a week long schedule of rehearsal and mentorship), Mira (Elektra's high school mentorship program), local conductors and choristers (BCCF and Kiwanis Music Festival), and choral students from UBC, allowing for observation, robust engagement and social connection.

Promoting Upstream Solutions for BC's Children and Youth

Working closely with our coalition partner organizations, First Call will undertake to strengthen and support the collective voice for the rights and well-being of BC's children and youth. The project will use 3 strategies, public education (including conducting research and disseminating/popularizing others' research), mobilizing communities and individuals through workshops, presentations, media work, toolkits, web resources, e-alerts, etc.) and direct public policy advocacy in collaboration with our partner organizations and communities (briefs, letters, reports, candidate surveys, convening/facilitating discussions among advocates and with decision-makers and policy 'influencers'). Some of the key issues these activities will address are the unacceptably high rates of child and family poverty in BC and our proposed solutions, the need for improved protections for children in BC's labour force, the need to reduce exposures to environmental toxins affecting children's health, and the crucial importance of increasing our investments in early childhood and supporting young families.

Vancouver Farmers Markets is a leading partner in the development of a local food hub for the City of Vancouver. With construction anticipated to start in 2014-15, the New City Market (NCM) will provide a significant public asset for generations of Vancouverites and BC farmers, featuring a year-round farmers market, supply aggregation & distribution support and commercial micro-processing kitchen. NCM will increase long-term capacity and revenues for local small and medium scale rural and urban growers and value-added micro-processors, and will increase access to these local products by Vancouver food buyers such as institutions, community groups, chefs, small retailers and the general public. As a result, NCM will provide environmental benefits, local economic development, increased training, skills development and employment opportunities, and increased public awareness about locally-produced foods and BC agriculture for generations to come. Community Boards in Action

Board Voice convened 20 inter-board forums in 14 different communities in the past 18 months. Community Boards in Action will target 5 communities each year and through providing focused supports, build on previous successes. Actions and outcomes will fall into several categories: 1) improved inter-agency collaborations in service delivery, management or governance; 2) improved governance; 3) enhanced community networking or 4) enhanced understanding of the importance of community services in the community. The project will stimulate collective action through the provision of seed money for supports that could include: facilitation, logistical and evaluation support, facilitation training for volunteers, and training resources. Financial assistance of up to $4000 per year will be directed towards each inter-board initiative to undertake activities to enhance the evolution of social services in their community. Each community will submit a plan of action for their project. Board Voice will coordinate the project provincially and support local efforts.

Premiere Production of Sally Stubbs play KID GLOVES (working title)

The Firehall will undertake a fully professional premiere production of Sally Stubbs' Kid Gloves, a play that takes us back to 1912 Vancouver. Its lead characters, Lurancy Harris and Minnie Miller, are loosely based on the first two women police officers in Canada, who were sworn in Vancouver. At a time when Vancouver was a bustling harbor city, vice and prostitution was on the rise and the Women's Christian Association fought for the enrollment of women into the police force as they felt women in the force might be able to assist 'fallen women' in redeeming themselves. Within the play there are eight characters played by six actors including an Alderman with a secret; his wife, the leader of the Women's Christian Association; the owner and operator of a number of bawdy houses; his girlfriend and her bodyguard/friend; a genial but sexist police sergeant; and the two lead characters, Lurancy Harris and Minnie Miller. Written in the style somewhat of silent movies, the production of the play will involve film/video as well as period costumes, a period setting and soundscape.

We will form the "Tri-Cities Seniors Network," the first seniors-led regional planning group for seniors in the Tri-Cities, involving seniors, seniors-serving organizations and businesses. The Network will explore the Tri-Cities "through seniors eyes" and develop collaborative solutions towards an Age-Friendly Tri-Cities. Our project will involve: * Developing an ongoing seniors planning network that ensures everyone's voice is heard, including developing a Terms of Reference and procedural guidelines *Organizing monthly meetings starting January 2013 on topics identified in our focus groups, to review existing service and initiatives, gaps, and develop initial action plans; topics identified include housing, social inclusion, transportation, access for socially isolated and immigrant seniors, lifelong learning, and coordinated services *Organizing seniors-led subcommittees to move forward on action plans *Conducting survey of seniors, particularly isolated seniors, and inventory of current services (depending on New Horizons funding).

The project will develop and provide new state-of-the-art intervention programs at a new permanent site in Vancouver called The Friend 2 Friend Play Centre. The programs will continue to be offered on a year round basis following the project. The project will provide programs tailored to the unique needs of pre-school aged children ages 3 through 5, as well as highly specialized Friend 2 Friend - Integrated Play Group Programs for children ages 6 through 12. The project will serve approximately 50-75 children with autism or related special needs annually, as well as 150 of their peers and siblings and their parents and caregivers. The Summerland Ornamental Gardens are located on a 6 hectare site of national horticultural significance with extensive botanical collections of native & introduced ornamental plants set within a unique dry ecosystem. The Project will introduce & demonstrate leading edge water conservation practices & technologies and will mobilize the community by creating a water stewardship team to raise awareness of sustainable water conservation landscaping. This Project will have two main parts: • introduction & demonstration of ecological science based practices & technologies in the planning, design & management of xeric or dry landscapes • education about these practices for the general public as well as public and private sector targeted groups, together with measurement of the impacts of adoption of such practices The Friends are uniquely positioned with partners in local and regional government, educational institutions and the media, and expert advisors in water management and ecological science to lead water conservation landscaping using this major horticultural resource.

Gabriola Commons Community Kitchen

A 26 acre parcel in the ALR, the Gabriola Commons contains large well-built structures dating from its former existence as a thriving goat farm. These include a 1200 sq.ft. cheese factory now in the process of being transformed into a community kitchen to be recognized by Provincial Health authorities as achieving commercial standards. Several stages have been completed in this transformation, including the donation of the elements of an entire commercial kitchen (from the renovation of a local children's camp), replacement of the roof, and upgrading of the infrastructure to meet current codes and to serve the plan for a future kitchen able to permit several teams of chefs to function concurrently, as well as a refrigerated room, dry storage room and means for dehydrating island produce. A grant will lead into the final stages of the renovation, transforming the donated kitchen into fully functioning elements fitting within a facility able to satisfy a broad spectrum of community needs as detailed in Section 15 : Goals and Objectives.
