Project Reach Out Expansion

Our core program Project Reach Out multi-service mobile Drop-in Centre and outreach program will expand to the Langley's (Langley city & Township of Langley), providing after-hours support and services to an area with over 12,000 youth ages 12- 18. This will effectively expand out reach from the Tri-Cities and service two regions (five cites) with a combined population of 32,000 youth. With the use of a modified community shuttle bus, and staffed by a team of 4 outreach workers, we will travel areas of the Langley’s meeting youth where they are, building relationships and a consistent presence, effectively filling a gap in after-hours services that include street outreach, crisis/early intervention, brief 1:1 support, drug and sexual health information, basic needs (health kits, cloths, food), linkages to other community services, and a safe place for youth to access. In consultation with the local RCMP, MCFD and other agencies, our collaborative approach will become an essential part of the continuum in the Langley’s, and will compliment existing youth services.

Purple Thistle Centre

The Purple Thistle has been operating for twelve years on the Eastside of Vancouver, running a 2500 sq/ft youth community centre that offers a plethora of free art and culture resources and support for 150-200 regular low-income youth participants. Our mission of youth empowerment and liberation is realized by the centre being run by a youth staff collective of 15-25 individuals who, in collaboration with the Directors, set policy, establish budgets, staff the facility and make all programming decisions. Central to our mandate of youth liberation and empowerment is providing specific leadership training in the context of real world decisions, real budgets and actual programming.

Focus Mentoring Program

Focus Mentoring is a program for children and youth referred to BBBS because they need additional support in their lives to help manage and overcome disadvantages associated with an individual or family-based mental-health challenge. In 2012 an audit of case files revealed that 53% of families stuggle with issues related to poverty, a chronic health condition or mental health issue. There is a direct correlation between the number of risk factors in a family and early match closures. 25% of match closures were the result of family issues which had mentors feeling overwhelmed. Focus will increase supports to families as children are matched in a one to one relationship with a mentor. Mentors receive relevant training and ongoing support so that they are better equipped to manage some of the challenges presented by families struggling with mental health. Children will receive child safety training while parents will have access to parent education and referral to additional community resources. Focus will provide a lasting relationship and help children reach their full potential.

Boothroyd Indian Band Bmx/Mountain Bike Recreation Project

The Boothroyd Indian Band is seeking to provide greater recreational opportunities and facilities to the residents of their reserve communities, with a particular focus on youth. The Band is deeply concerned about the health and well being of their membership as a result of sedentary lifestyles and the prevalence of drugs and alcohol. As part of this the Band is proposing the development of the infrastructure, facilities as well as a coaching program necessary to provide the community with the opportunities as well as the skills, knowledge and capacity to develop, implement and maintain a robust bmx/mountain bike recreation program. The goals & objectives of this plan include the following: Construct a bmx/mountain bike skills park in the Boothroyd community of Klahmoose Construct mountain bike trails with features within the immediate vicinity Provide Boothroyd residents, youth, with the equipment and skills necessary to build and properly maintain the skills park and trails Train youth to be mountain bike and group ride leaders Encourage youth to live healthy active lives

Preteen Nights

Preteen Nights addresses the need for evening programming for preteens and the transitional issues preteens face as they move into adolescence. The program will provide 14 evening drop-in programs at a minimum of 7 Club locations across the Lower Mainland. The Preteen Nights program integrates social recreational activities with discussions related to participants’ specific needs. In this way, participants shape the program by determining both the social activities and the discussion topics, ensuring that the program remains relevant to them. The groups may be mixed or gender-specific, depending on the needs at each participating Club. Trained staff provide the mentorship and support necessary to make the environment safe and comfortable for participants to raise issues that are affecting their lives. The program has seen great success since it was launched three years ago, and the program model continues to be adapted to address the unique challenges this age group faces. BGC is committed to further expanding the program to meet the needs of more of our preteen Club members.

Grandview Underage Youth Response

This builds upon the work and findings of the 'Underage Alcohol Response Table' and the 'Youth Matter Planning Table', using a place-based approach, to integrate at-risk youth aged 10 - 15 into school and community centres. The objective is to outreach a group of 40-50 youth that have been congregating at the Britannia site who are currently actively engaged in self harming behaviour, susceptible to exploitation and criminality. The project will provide staff and resources to coordinate and establish relationships with individual youth to address immediate physical and safety needs, (food, appropriate clothing, access to Adolescent Medicine team, shelter) particular at times when other services are not available - evenings and weekends. This team will work with the RICHER, Roving Leaders, school based teams, MCFD contracted services (family counsellors, A&D counsellor, Aboriginal social worker, etc.) to build relationships and advocate from a youth centered approach, involving youth directly in decisions about their health and safety by providing information, engagement, empowerment

A Right to Food? Food Security for BC's Poorest Kids

The project will study the potential legal and constitutional rights implications of childhood malnutrition in BC. Working with other not-for-profit groups and social science experts, we will interview families on social assistance across BC focusing on the experiences of children living with food insecurity. We will compile a report with these narratives and analyze the issue of childhood malnutrition from a uniquely legal rights-based perspective that considers whether children can fully realize their constitutionally protected rights and freedoms while in a state of malnourishment. In documenting the impact of food insecurity on the enjoyment of constitutional rights, this project will provide a platform on which community groups can build their education initiatives to include a legal rights-based analysis. This research may enable further advocacy by affected communities and education of government and judicial decision-makers to ensure that food insecurity does not compromise children's rights.

Strengthening Youth and Community Engagement in Poverty Reduction

The proposed project is an innovative and sustainable 3-year plan to reconnect with communities across the province through expanding our outreach and community engagement activities, and strengthening our youth engagement and youth leadership initiatives. Regardless of the outcome of the upcoming provincial election, we will need to re-establish the call for a bold and comprehensive poverty reduction plan and we aim to do this through meaningful community engagement in order to strengthen existing relationships and form new ones. This will revitalize the poverty reduction plan as a community-driven call to action. We will continue to provide support for youth in low-income families and their allies to be a driving force in this call. We will provide mentorship and resources to high-school youth to be involved in the Coalition's outreach strategy and community engagement so that youth ideas and perspectives are always at the heart of what we do, and support them in taking leadership roles in organizing in their schools and communities to raise awareness about the issues of poverty.

Youth Worker will also work with youth to educate the community, parents, youth and others on the benefits to community engagement, and the positive effect it will have on self-esteem, confidence, relationships, and leadership. Youth worker will work with the youth to develop projects ideas to ensure program is youth led: Assisting youth in skill building, self esteem, and confidence, as well as engagement in a community. Growing Check, Growing Change

Young people are increasingly demanding programs, opportunities, and organizations that understand, respect, and respond to their unique needs and experiences as a diverse group transitioning from childhood to adulthood. Growing Check, Growing Change emerged from this finding and harnesses young people’s passion for social and environmental issues, turning it into community-based and youth-led education and action. Growing Check, Growing Change has complementary short-term and long-term objectives and activities. In the short-term, the project will recruit and train a diverse group of youth as peer educators, providing them with popular education tools, skills, and resources to lead dialogues. Equipped in this way, this group will engage, educate, activate, and inspire thousands of B.C. youth with social and environmental justice workshops. In the long-term, through systematic monitoring and evaluation, the project will pilot the next step in Check Your Head’s growth as an organization as staff focus on recruiting, training, and supporting a strong team of volunteer peer educators.

Generation Y-Not?: Growing Local Leaders

Our goal is to create an action plan for sustained engagement of youth in leadership initiatives and civic engagement. We will seek direction from youth. How do they want to be involved in their communities? What is meaningful to them? The project begins in June 2013 with a relationship-building activity sponsored by the CBT and partners. This will give youth and youth leaders from throughout the region a chance to connect and hear about successful youth leadership activities. They will share the programs they've enjoyed, develop strategies to further these projects and envision the leadership programs and youth-led projects that are most meaningful and relevant. Following the forum, we will facilitate up to five regional youth gatherings based on objectives identified by the youth. The gatherings will be diverse and varied, hosted in communities throughout the region. This takes youth from across the region out of 'their boxes' to participate in activities that foster cultural learning, develop leadership skills and build capacity in our communities.

'Healthy Masculinity'/'Taking Flight'

Our proposed project is two-fold. The 'Healthy Masculinity' component will include identification of best practices with boys, and focus groups in schools or community settings. The groups will be lead by experienced male leaders, and will explore masculinity and boys' unique needs and challenges. The boys will be invited to be part of an advisory committee to help develop curriculum for pilot groups in the second year of the project. A key aspect of this project is youth engagement. We will encourage the boys to take an active role to best meet their needs. The other component of our project is 'Taking Flight'. This 12 session group will serve young women who are aging out of foster care, moving out on their own, have limited healthy support networks, are at risk of relationship violence, and who are at risk for homelessness or living in poverty. The focus will be on successfully navigating the challenges of transition to adulthood such as access to affordable services, life skills (employment skills, housing, etc.), and maintaining healthy relationships and support networks.

Family Community Kitchens

Funding will allow for a Family Community Kitchen program where nutritionally vulnerable parents and children will come together for six week sessions. Community kitchen groups will meet twice weekly to prepare dishes in large enough quantities so that participants will be able to take away multiple servings of each dish to be warmed up at later times. The program will provide an opportunity for parents to be actively involved in their child's learning in a stable and fun environment. Staff and regular guest educators will support the experience-based learning of children based on the priorities of positive parenting and nutrition. The program will alleviate hunger, nuture positive child development and provide food and nutrition education. Nutrition is very important for everyone, but it is especially important for children because it is directly linked to all aspects of their growth and development - factors which will have direct ties to their level of health as adults. Child development, hunger alleviation and education about healthy eating are the main benefits of this program.

Program Coordination and Enhancement for 0-6 Services

This project will address the recent EDI results in the Langley Communities by providing some coordination of programs to further enhance our Aldergrove programs as well as expand programs to a growing neighbourhood in Langley (Willoughby). Utilizing the successes of our programs in Aldergrove and Langley, we would like to support the Langley community planning process through enhancement of services to areas where population growth is occurring. In Willoughby specifically, we would be mirroring services through our prenatal nutrition services, outreach and family resource programs, and aim to partner with an immunization clinic once a week. With expansion of programs and Willoughby being designated as a growing are of need, this coordinator would help develop and enhance a direct service hub within the Willoughby area. By providing nutritional support, it would enhance our Aldergrove Services creating a focus on healthy living.

Youth on Water (YOW!)

The mandate of the Youth on Water! (YOW!) is to educate, empower and engage youth, with a focus on youth at risk, from communities of the Skeena Watershed. We do this by conservation education, job skills training and healthy physical activity during five-day rafting programs on local rivers with certified guides. There are three main goals of the YOW! Program: i) provide a dependable, safe and supportive recreational opportunity with a strong leadership component for Hazelton area youth who are considered at risk and/or marginalized within their family or social situations, ii) provide critical support in the development of the region's future stewards and conservation leaders across geographic and ethnic communities, and iii) educate local youth with regard to the character, location, ecology and diversity of their local river ecosystems. The positive that we have seen in young people attending YOW! has a positive effect on their families and the wider community, including aspects of school life. YOW! was developed by SWCC as a pilot program in Hazelton in 2009.

Aboriginal Youth Media Arts Training in Hartley Bay

The proposed 2-year project, 'One Foot in the Past, One Foot in the Future: Aboriginal Youth Media Arts Training in Hartley Bay' will be part of the Young Gitga’at Guardian Program, and will harness and build on youth interest in multimedia projects. The project will provide the skills and motivation necessary to inspire intergenerational learning and improve intercommunity relations. Between 2013-2015 we will empower youth with the skills necessary to employ modern storytelling techniques to capture age-old teachings and traditions. Using photography and film to engage Gitga’at youth with elders and knowledgeable community members presents a novel opportunity to bridge various intergenerational approaches to cultural learning. Gitga'at elders are increasingly unable to participate in cultural harvests and other activities within the territory and thus inhibited in their ability to pass on cultural knowledge and traditions. The proposed project will ensure that important Gitga'at teachings are documented for the benefit of present and future generations.

Youth Voices

Through the Lens: Immigrant Youth Perspectives is a youth-led project that will train 15-20 immigrant youth on film and video on themes of anti-violence, anti-bullying and healthy relationships. Youth will be 13-15 years old. The first phase of healthy relationship training will take place over a weekend retreat in December, 2013 followed by 10 weekly training sessions from January - March, 2014. The second phase of film and video technology and production skills will take place from February - March 2014 and over five half-day sessions during school spring break. During the school spring break the youth will design, film and produce the remaining 10 podcasts. The podcasts will be aired as weekly Internet TV episodes from March-May 2014. The project will be supported by up to five youth peer mentors and the Project Coordinator. The project will run from October 2013-June 2014. This project originated from feedback from youth, teachers, community service providers and local and provincial social issues. Consultations were held with teachers, youth, community service providers.

Connection Through Spirit is a dynamic and interactive series of four youth-led interfaith dialogue forums culminating in a unique, all-inclusive 'un-conference' exploring our connection to Self, Family, Community, and Earth through spirituality. The purpose of this project is to provide youth of diverse cultural and spiritual backgrounds with opportunities to reflect upon and share with others the value of spiritual awareness, practice and tradition in the process of connecting to these four aspects of society. By engaging young people in intercultural and intergenerational dialogue on topics that are important to them, we hope to address the pervasive sense of disconnection and isolation that has become so endemic in modern secular society, build bridges between and within faith communities, and create constructive collaborations.

Enderby Youth Outreach Worker

The small rural town of Enderby, located in the North Okanagan area of BC, has a population of 3,000 people. The Splatsin First Nation, with over 800 members, resides on reserve lands adjacent to the town. Youth in the community, regardless of ethnic background, have been underserved by social services and community groups for many years. As a result, these youth are particularly vulnerable to the risks and dangers of small town isolation—including drugs, alcohol, violence, poverty, joblessness, difficulty at school and with family relations. Youth in this community urgently need help to overcome these barriers and challenges and to acquire the skills that will lead to success in life—including positive family and community relations and secure, meaningful employment or connection to education. This project will establish a Youth Outreach Worker to bring the community together around common concerns for their youth by connecting with young people at-risk and developing long-term solutions to help them begin an uninterrupted journey to a healthy, secure and self-sufficient life.

Community Hubs Expansion

PDCRS would like to expand the Hubs in the South Okanagan. These “one-stop shop” Hubs are for families struggling with literacy, emotional, physical or other barriers to promote increased awareness and accessibility to services that support healthy early childhood development for all families regardless of vulnerability. Rather than having to guess who to call or where to go, they can meet face to face with a facilitator to get information and help with accessing the right services. We will meet with families where they live and work to find the best times to connect and the best ways to ensure that families feel comfortable starting the conversation. The hub will also be available in the evenings for parenting programs. In 2008, the United Way of Canada commissioned an environmental scan of early childhood development initiatives and concluded that there is “widespread consensus in Canada that hub models are an optimum approach for the provision of ECD services.” And hubs located in schools are the “single most effective intervention geared to children, youth & their families.”

Sto:lo Nation KidStart

PLEA and Sto:lo Nation's Community Development Department have agreed to work together to implement the KidStart Mentoring Program for children and youth living in Sto:lo Nation's Traditional Territory. KidStart was developed by PLEA 27 years ago and has already been successfully replicated in Campbell River, Courtenay and Victoria. These programs serve Aboriginal youth from the communities served, but this is the first time the program will be implemented with a specifically Aboriginal focus. KidStart's goal is to provide each participant with the opportunity to develop a supportive relationship with a Volunteer Mentor who is a consistent and positive role model. Mentors plan weekly activities in the community that will provide participants with experiences that will foster a sense of personal achievement, reinforce their strengths, and create new interests. The program is fundamentally preventative, rooted in the belief and supported by research that early engagement with a mentor improves participants' capacity to overcome adversity and become more active in their communities.

Adaptive Recreation Program - Vancouver

The Power To Be Adaptive Recreation Program began in Vancouver in response to requests from key community partners. The Adaptive Recreation program offers inclusive adventure-based recreation activities for people living with a barrier or disability. We combine an ability-centered perspective and the benefits of nature, to strengthen people’s connections with themselves and their communities. The program continues to grow and the demands for our services increase year-after-year. We plan to increase program days with existing partners such as Semiahmoo House, Aspires Society, Children's Heart Network, the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provincial program and Vancouver Parks Access programs. We also hope to develop new partnerships with community agencies through our open enrolment program in 2013.

Project Limelight Society

Project Limelight - Performing Arts Program

Recognizing a need for a creative outlet for youth living in Vancouver’s DTES, Project Limelight Society developed a free performing arts program, running four months long, twice a year. Participants are introduced to various theatre arts disciplines such as acting, creative writing, singing, mask, dance, stand-up comedy and improvisation. Participants spend 3 months rehearsing a full length production and then perform on a professional stage, giving them the opportunity to showcase everything they’ve accomplished. The last show was performed to two sold-out audiences of more than 600 people. Project Limelight Society provides food security and a safe place to build a community, which is particularly important for families who are also dealing with the additional challenges of addiction, poverty, discrimination or isolation. Providing this outlet for their children is very important to the families in our community, and it is reflected in the pride they experience, when they see their children perform.

ALIVE: Building Urban Aboriginal Inclusion through Youth Leadership

To expand on an initial pilot partnership of ALIVE, Motivate Canada, Ray-Cam, the Vancouver Park Board (VPB), to anchor Aboriginal youth (16-24) as leaders/role models, dubbed ‘Messengers’,in 8-12 selected Vancouver community Centres (CCs). Messengers will be recruited from CC catchment areas, participate in training via Motivate Canada’s GEN7 & VPB leadership programs and be engaged in leadership roles in weekly youth programs at their selected CC. In addition they will be employed a minimum 150 hours on auxiliary part-time payroll at the CC. Working with centre staff on outreach strategies, they will bring connections with their culture,and local aboriginal residents creating and leading activities involving Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal youth. The Messengers will form a Team (volunteer and paid) to work as a City-wide with the 24 CC and City departments, schools and local mainstream organizations as part of a three-pronged strategy to foster opportunities for urban Aboriginal involvement, social connection,reflection in Vancouver’s neighbourhood CC.
