ONE TO ONE Literacy Society Endowment Fund
Students who get a poor start in reading rarely catch up. Struggling with learning to read can be emotionally and mentally exhausting for children. It affects nearly every aspect of their school experience, from academics, to relationships with peers, to feelings of self worth.
For over 25 years, volunteer tutors at ONE TO ONE Literacy Society have helped children develop literacy skills for success in school. Struggling students receive focused time and attention from a caring, patient volunteer to help them achieve reading success.
“I practice at home and at school. I can read books now with harder words as well as longer books that are 350 pages.”
— ONE TO ONE Student
The impact extends beyond the classroom. ONE TO ONE helps children discover joy in reading, and ignites a renewed sense of self-confidence that stays with them for life.
The ONE TO ONE approach works. In a recent survey, 90% of classroom teachers reported that ONE TO ONE was making a difference. 95% of students reported that their ONE TO ONE tutor helped them become a better reader.
Each year, about 1,600 students in 100 schools in the Lower Mainland benefit from the dedicated support of over 360 volunteer tutors. This includes over 23,000 volunteer hours committed to helping struggling readers.
The ONE TO ONE program is available at no cost to schools or students. It is entirely funded through generous donors. A gift to ONE TO ONE allows opportunity for more schools to introduce ONE TO ONE to their students. Donations also help to strengthen the support needed for recruiting dedicated volunteers. Your gift helps struggling readers develop literacy skills for success in school, and in life.
“I’m in my 12th year of volunteering now, and I still enjoy every minute of it.” — Volunteer Tutor
