Amanda Todd’s family establishes charitable funds to honour their daughter

The family of Amanda Todd has created two different funds at Vancouver Foundation in honour of their daughter.
October 22, 2012 — The family of Amanda Todd has created two different funds at Vancouver Foundation in honour of their daughter.
The 15-year-old Port Coquitlam girl died last week after years of being bullied online and at school. Prior to her death, she produced and posted a video on YouTube which detailed the taunts and torments she had endured.
“Amanda was a very caring individual. She was willing to help others who needed help,” Amanda’s mother Carol Todd said. “One of Amanda’s goals was to get her message out there and have it used as a learning tool for others.”
These funds will support anti-bullying education, help young people struggling with mental health issues and support educational programs that help people with learning disabilities. She also had a passion for the arts and singing, which this fund may also support.
Donations to Amanda’s Memorial Fund will be used immediately, the other fund – Amanda’s Legacy Fund – is a permanent endowment fund designed to grow over time with a portion of the interest generated each year used to support programs identified by the Todd family. In this way, young people will benefit for years and years to come.
In partnering with Vancouver Foundation, the Todd family wanted to work with an established and well-respected philanthropic organization that could not only manage the funds but also provide advice on worthwhile projects, programs and charities that could be supported.
“We offer the Todd family our deepest condolences. And we are honoured that Amanda’s parents chose to work with Vancouver Foundation to preserve their daughter’s memory,” said Faye Wightman, President and CEO. “Despite their great sorrow, these amazing people are working to ensure that other youth and their families will benefit from Amanda’s story.”
