CFC and Vancouver Foundation support young theatre artists in BC

To mark its 50th anniversary, the National Theatre School of Canada (NTS), in conjunction with Community Foundations of Canada (CFC) and Vancouver Foundation, will support young theatre artists in British Columbia through the creation of a new arts endowment fund.
June 13, 2011 — To mark its 50th anniversary, the National Theatre School of Canada (NTS), in conjunction with Community Foundations of Canada (CFC) and Vancouver Foundation, will support young theatre artists in British Columbia through the creation of a new arts endowment fund.
The NTS’s “Theatre and Community Engagement” (TCE) includes the establishment of seven endowments that will eventually total $2 million. The endowments were initially seeded by the J. W. McConnell Family Foundation. TCE will provide regional support, in perpetuity, for initiatives and productions that are social and/or community driven, and created by emerging professionals who are National Theatre School students or alumni motivated by the social impact of the arts on communities. Seven communities — Vancouver, Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal, and St. John’s — will manage the endowments for the program.
Vancouver Foundation will set up and manage the fund for British Columbia. The new fund will support the work of young, NTS-trained artists who are producing in BC, as well as NTS-trained artists who are from BC and producing work elsewhere.
“We are honoured to have been chosen by the National Theatre School to be stewards of this new endowment,” says Faye Wightman, president and CEO of Vancouver Foundation. “In the last two years, there have been serious funding cuts to the arts community in BC. This project is a great start for many of BC’s emerging theatre artists. We look forward to growing this fund and the exciting opportunities for our young artists through our partnership with the NTS.”
The first call for submissions is expected to take place in autumn 2011.
Since 2005, Vancouver Foundation has worked with the NTS to support the theatre arts community in British Columbia. This latest endowment is one of many funds at Vancouver Foundation that support arts and culture in BC. Over the last five years, Vancouver Foundation has granted more than $4 million to 200 arts and culture charities across the province.
