Women in Philanthropy

At Vancouver Foundation, we recognize that women are one of the most significant forces in charitable giving. And we also understand that women have distinct philanthropic preferences, especially around the area of engagement.

We provide a range of opportunities for women to become more involved with their charitable giving. Examples include a giving circle, site visits at charities, speaker events, granting meetings and updates on the impact of giving.

Giving Well

Giving Well is Vancouver Foundation’s giving circle and it brings women together to engage in grantmaking, learn about current community needs and collectively support women’s issues.

Check back for the next granting meeting date.

Giving circles are a form of philanthropy where groups of individuals donate their own money to a pooled fund, decide together which community projects to support and seek to increase their awareness of and engagement in various issues.

With a contribution of $1,000 or more, you can become a voting member of Giving Well and help make funding decisions. Members are invited to a granting meeting where Vancouver Foundation will present selected applications from charities focusing on women. These applications have been pre-screened by our volunteer Advisory Committees. Giving Well members will have the chance to discuss and debate each project brought forward by Vancouver Foundation, and then decide together which charities they wish to support.

Since 2011, Giving Well members have granted over $180,000 to several charitable projects supporting women such as; overcoming violence, mentoring programs, youth-engagement, career development, helping new immigrant moms, helping aspiring female artists, finding and maintaining housing and gaining financial independence. You can see a detailed list of these projects here.

In addition to grant-making, members of the giving circle will hear from an expert community speaker on issues facing women in BC as well as have an opportunity to attend a site visit at a local charity.

“It’s a way of giving that feels more personal than simply writing a cheque and I feel more involved in the granting process since we can ask Vancouver Foundation staff questions. I also like that Giving Well focuses on women and children’s issues, which are often underfunded.” - Mary Lou, a Giving Well member since 2011

Giving Well Chair

The Giving Well giving circle is chaired by Vancouver Foundation Board member, Sarah Sidhu. Sarah has served on Vancouver Foundation’s Board of Directors since 2014, and is currently the representative for the United Way of the Lower Mainland.  Sarah is a practicing lawyer and provides advice regarding transactions in areas of corporate, commercial and securities law and  her full bio is here.
